Politics
What is the parish’s role in politics? A timely question. The U.S. Bishops answer the question in their
Father Dan
document Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship:
“15. Clergy and lay people have complementary roles in public life. We bishops have the primary responsibility to hand on
the Church’s moral and social teaching. Together with priests and deacons, assisted by religious and lay leaders of the
Church, we are to teach fundamental moral principles that help Catholics form their consciences correctly, to provide
guidance on the moral dimensions of public decisions, and to encourage the faithful to carry out their responsibilities in
political life. In fulfilling these responsibilities, the Church’s leaders avoid endorsing or opposing candidates. As Pope
Benedict XVI stated in Deus Caritas Est, ‘The Church wishes to help form consciences in political life and to stimulate
greater insight into the authentic requirements of justice as well as greater readiness to act accordingly, even when this
might involve conflict with situations of personal interest. . . . The Church cannot and must not take upon herself the
political battle to bring about the most just society possible. She cannot and must not replace the State. Yet at the same time
she cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice.’
“16. As the Holy Father also taught in Deus Caritas Est, ‘The direct duty to work for a just ordering of society is proper
to the lay faithful’ (no. 29). This duty is more critical than ever in today’s political environment, where Catholics may feel
politically disenfranchised, sensing that no party and too few candidates fully share the Church’s comprehensive
commitment to the life and dignity of every human being from conception to natural death. Yet this is not a time for retreat
or discouragement; rather, it is a time for renewed engagement. Forming their consciences in accord with Catholic
teaching, Catholic lay women and men can become actively involved: running for office; working within political parties;
communicating their concerns and positions to elected officials; and joining diocesan social mission or advocacy networks,
state Catholic conference initiatives, community organizations, and other efforts to apply authentic moral teaching in the
public square. Even those who cannot vote have the right to have their voices heard on issues that affect their lives and the
common good.”
And so, we pray in the words of the bishops: “Merciful Father, Thank you for inviting each of us to join in your work of
building the kingdom of love, justice, and peace. Draw us close to you in prayer as we discern your call in our families and
communities. Send us forth to encounter all whom you love: those not yet born, those in poverty, those in need of welcome.
Inspire us to respond to the call to faithful citizenship, during election season and beyond. Help us to imitate your charity
and compassion and to serve as models of loving dialogue. Teach us to treat others with respect, even when we disagree,
and seek to share your love and mercy. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.”

The MQ webpage (https://mqhr.org/creation) has a list of
resources to learn more about the environment and ways to
make changes to make a difference. You will also find a
video of the Care of Creation blessing. There is also a
video about the group, and a link to click where you can
make your commitment. So far there are over 200 people
who have made many commitments. For example: 118
people are committed to reduce, reuse and recycle to
reduce landfill refuse, 136 are using reusable water bottles,
168 are turning off unused lights, 90 are buying more local
foods, 91 plan to plant a pollinator garden and another 67
a butterfly garden! This is just a very small sample of all
the commitments that we have made. Together we are
making a difference to care for creation.
The group is considering having an event
quarterly/seasonally. Some ideas are to learn what the city
is doing for the environment and how we can participate,
learn about gardening (rain gardens, butterfly gardens and
vegetable and flower gardens), energy reduction around
the home, etc. If there is something you would like to learn
about and do we are interested in making that happen. We
are interested to see if we can do better as a parish campus.
In the past several years we have already made changes in
the ELC and church to reduce costs and improve
efficiency in lighting and heating and cooling. We want to
see if there is more that we can do.

The MQ school has been learning about taking care of the
environment and has taken many steps to protect our earth.
Here are just a few examples of how they are caring for
Meet the Allen Family . . .
The Allen family have been members at Mary Queen since August 13, 2005 when they came into full communion
in the Catholic church. Prior to that Mike had been an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church here in
Lexington. The entire Allen clan (Mike and Angie, parents; adult children: Chelsea, Lizzy, Mary Grace, Naomi,
Bruce, and Ryan; and Zoe who is a sophomore at Lexington Catholic) have been active parishioners since that
day.
Mike is currently the Director of Family Life and Evangelization for the Diocese and also teaches a class at
Lexington Catholic. Angie recently retired after many years as the Youth Director at Mary Queen and is now
enjoying spending time with her first granddaughter Karsyn, daughter of Naomi and her husband Hayden Byrd.
Mike and Angie have been examples of deep faith to countless parishioners, engaged couples, young people, and
many others.
In the family’s time at Mary Queen they have been involved in many ministries. Mike has served as an RCIA
catechist, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and member of the Knights of Columbus. Both Mike and Angie have
participated in BUILD and CRHP. In addition to her staff responsibilities, Angie participated in ACTS and has
participated in the music ministry. The children have been involved in many ministries including Youth Group,
Ablaze (Young Adult Ministry), Music Ministry, BUILD, and more. Naomi has been the music leader for the
monthly youth Mass for several years and Mary Grace uses her musical talents as a singer/songwriter and
recording artist who expresses her faith through her music (facebook page).
Mike and Angie are proud of the ministry Mary Queen has done serving the needy in our community and Diocese
in our connection with Holy Cross parish in Jackson, celebrating the diversity within our parish, and striving for
justice with our work with BUILD. During the pandemic, they have found new ways to develop their faith by
having more time to read and pray for Mike and by participating in online small groups for Angie. They are
thankful for the loving and caring community of Mary Queen which has been there for them when they need it.

Face to face learning is going well. Our students are
working hard at school while keeping physically
distant from one another. One of the many differences
to our school routine is that we are eating in the
classrooms this year. Although this might not seem
ideal, we are making the best of it and getting to know
our classmates even better than before as we share
conversations and laugh together during lunch.
We were thrilled to return to church for Mass this
month. We have been celebrating Mass virtually each
week but we are now attending face to face. It is good
to be together in church, feels like home.

PK-C It is hard to believe we have been back at Mary Queen for more than 2 months and we have already learned so much! God has provided us with so many blessings and so many wonderful things to explore with our five senses! With Fall in the air, we have learned all about apples, how leaves change with the season and now we are exploring pumpkins! K-1 K1 has been learning about the story of creation and all of the gifts God made for us. We have also been talking about how we can be good stewards of the Earth to take care of creation. God is the best teacher however and granted students a real life lesson when a butterfly landed on a student at recess! How precious!
