more money for scholarships for women and filed a suit for equal

Lifelong Competitor
Jan Allen found she loved to compete at an early age growing
up in the inner city of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Introduced
to competitive swimming and bowling as a 9-year-old, she
loved trying to win and the challenge of getting better,
whatever the sport. Opportunities in sports for girls in those
days were extremely limited compared to today. It’s why she
refers to recently deceased Supreme Court Justice, Ruth
Bader Ginsberg, as her hero. “Her work, her life opened up
the world of sports and athletics for girls like me who had
that desire to play and compete.”
By the time Allen was a senior in high school, the GAA (Girls’
Athletic Association) in Michigan had put together an eight-game
schedule for girls basketball. It wasn’t what girls are offered
today, but it was a start, and Jan Allen took full advantage. In
fact, the lanky teenager demonstrated enough skill to be invited
(still no scholarships) to continue playing at the next level, Grand
Rapids Community College. She literally jumped at the chance!
After two years at GRCC she was offered a partial scholarship (one
of the first two women in Michigan) to continue her basketball jour-
ney at Grand Valley State where she also played volleyball for three
seasons. Her passion for the game grew commiserate with her skill
set. In those early days of women’s basketball, all women’s teams
were lumped together regardless of the size of the institution for the
AIAW national championship tournament. Allen averaged 18 points
and 10 boards per game and led GVS to an upset win in the AIAW
regional tournament over Ohio State. The fire was stoked!

Her inner fire continued to smolder, so when Barry University
called and offered her the challenge of taking over their wom-
en’s program, she couldn’t resist. Building that program using
European recruits and quality transfers, she soon led Barry to the
Sweet 16. Meanwhile, she continued her own education in clinical
psychology. Allen also served five years as assistant athletic
director at Florida International University, but she missed the
mentoring that went along with coaching. She stepped away from
athletic administration to answer her calling as a clinical psychol-
ogist to work with active-duty American military servicemen and From our roof to yours,

expansive curved staircase just off the foyer. The staircase leads
up to a five-bedroom, two-bathroom second floor, with rooms
dedicated to each of the three grandchildren. The primary color
scheme for the upstairs is shades of blue and gray, but the girls
have their share of pink and green. The large master bedroom has
an equally large walk-in closet and master bath with garden tub
overlooking the golf course. A large attic space is off the master
closet where Sally keeps holiday decorations and mementos.
Downstairs everyone gathers on the indoor/outdoor porch which
extends across the entire back of the house. This massive space is
covered by a honey-stained pine beadboard ceiling. A living area
complete with a sofa, loveseat and television is where you will
often find Sally. The large space also includes a dining area for
the whole family, a workout space, and bar area.
Outdoor decks flank each side, with a conversational area
overlooking the pond on one side, and the other with an outdoor
dining area surrounded by flower boxes arranged by Sally’s green
thumbs. Sally has decorated the space with rich tones of red,
gold, black and shades of brown. “We replaced the siding in 2018
and that gave me the opportunity to change the original color
scheme,” says Sally.
Just inside, the large cherry kitchen has plenty of cabinet space
for storage and a cooking island with gas-burning cooktop. “My
next project is to remodel the kitchen,” says Sally, “but this
year has been a little challenging,” she laughs. As we talk in the
kitchen, Sally and Larry’s camaraderie reminds me of why the
kitchen is the heart of the home. The den off the kitchen is deco-
rated with soft cream leather sofas framing the fireplace which is
perfect for family and guests to relax while the action takes place

I wish I could take full credit for this recipe, but many moons ago,
I was into the whole Pampered Chef movement, and this one just
stuck. The original recipe actually lists all the Pampered Chef
products to use, but if you have a knife, a pan and a bowl, you’re
good. Thanks to Thomas Keller’s Master Class, I’ve ridded myself
of a lot of unnecessary gadgets, and as a result, appreciate the
process of cooking a little more. This little treat is perfect for
fall and winter snacking, and the sweet and savory flavor was a
Appalachian Garage Doors favorite with my young children. Pair it with a heavy cabernet
and you’re set.
