WELCOME ! Michael Krug, AIA, Chair Welcome to the 78th Annual Mid Summer Conference at Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel! As always, this year’s conference will be a premier event filled with educational and networking opportunities for Michigan building owners, designers, and constructors. We have worked diligently with the Grand Hotel to maintain the character and traditions of this great event, while incorporating COVID-19 protocols to promote a safe environment for all. The planning committee’s focus and guiding principle this year is unity. The pandemic, as well as heightened awareness of societal injustices, has made us reevaluate how we engage in our personal and professional relationships, and how we interact with the environment around us. Our AEC industry is and will be impacted by this mindset shift; we need to collectively strategize how best to effectively chart a unified course for the coming decades. Influenced by this vision, this year’s education program includes both industry current thinking and personal enrichment. Use of sustainable design-minded mass timber construction will be showcased, alongside forward-thinking workplace design. We’ll have a panel discussion on the integrated architect/builder process of Construction Administration, a look at Claims Case Studies, as well as an economic forecast update from both AIA and AGC economists. Finally, an inside look at the Grand’s recently completed amenity upgrades, as well as hearing (and tasting) about Napa Valley wineries. My family has traveled to the island every summer with our 14 year-old daughter; it is a special place for us to spend time together. We also look forward each year to spending time with friends and colleagues and departing with a fresh perspective for what lies ahead. In this spirit, this year we uphold our valued traditions of cocktail receptions on the porch, bocci ball tournament on the lawn, golf scramble, MAF Auction, and the culminating Afterglo event on Saturday evening. The conference continues to be a family friendly event, with a fun and safe children’s program of events, including Family Night on Friday at the newly renovated pool! Please join me in thanking all this year’s sponsors for making this conference a reality – we appreciate their support, especially in these uncertain times. We will continue to monitor the state’s handling of COVID-19, and refine our conference protocols as necessary to accommodate. We ask for your understanding if certain program elements are modified prior to the event. Finally, I would like to pay respect to Robert Raisch, who passed away in February this year. He was a long- standing committee member, important influencer of the conference, and all-around fantastic guy. His memory lives on in the conference this year, and all those to come. Thank you for joining us!
