Towards a Living Income for Kenyan Coffee
Farmers

                                                                                                                                                            be successful, we need a sector-wide
                                                                                                                                                            data-driven approach to determine
                                                                                                                                                            living-income gaps by farmers in
                                                                                                                                                            every coffee farming county. This in
                                                                                                                                                            fact is an exercise which should be
                                                                                                                                                            carried out by County governments
                                                                                                                                                            which currently hold most of the
                                                                                                                                                            roles on coffee production as per the
                                                                                                                                                            2019 Coffee Regulations. Already,
                                                                                                                                                            living income benchmarks exists
                                                                                                                                                            for some counties but it is not
                                                                                                                                                            harmonized in such a way that it can

                                                                     ples that were tested in the last
                                                                     24 hours.
                                                                        The cases are spread across
                                                                     five counties in the country
                                                                     namely; Nairobi (11), Momba-
                                                                     sa (5), Kajiado (3), Kiambu (2),
                                                                     and Wajir (2).
                                                                        The 11 cases confirmed in
                                                                     the capital were recorded in
                                                                     Embakasi (6), Kamukunji (2),
                                                                     Lang’ata (2), and Starehe (1); all
                                                                     the cases in Mombasa were from
                                                                     Mvita and those in Kiambu re-

has received foodstuffs from the
Nyeri County Public Service Board.
These are aimed at cushion the less
fortunate people in Nyeri during this
time when many families are strug-
gling to put food on their table.
  Nyeri County has not been spared
by the national job loss and non-per-
forming business occasioned by the
devastating effects of Coronavirus
which have severely affected econ-
omies globally.
  The governor was grateful and
urged more people to step up and
help address insufficient food sup-
ply. He further urged those with job
vacancies to consider offering them
to their neighbours.
  The team led by the chairman Paul
Kimondo noted that the effort is
geared towards feeding the vulner-
able people in Nyeri County in the
wake of Covid-19.
