NCBA
NCBA are very passionate and proud of our heritage and the basketball community we have
created. We have a strong sense of belonging and value the inclusiveness and participation of all
our members. At NCBA, we have a proud tradition of developing players, coaches and officials as
well as a history of fielding competitive teams. We are an award-winning association which boasts
a successful high quality local domestic competition and a representative program with several
athletes who further their achievements at a regional and national level.
NCBA is a non-profit sporting organisation based in Rangiora, located in the fast-growing Region
of North Canterbury. NCBA is a well-recognised community association servicing the North
Canterbury District and wider community catering for all ages from grass roots to elite levels. The
association was established in 1981. We have grown to a registration base of over 1300 children and
adults. Even these large numbers do not include many others who are actively involved such as
spectators or volunteers. NCBA is affiliated with both CBA Basketball and Basketball New Zealand.
NCBA has grown to become one of the largest sporting organisations in the local area. More
importantly, NCBA has had and will continue to have a positive impact on the lives of our players,
their families and the wider community.
Basketball in North Canterbury has come a long way since the pioneers of the sport laced up
their high top boots in the period shortly after the Second World War. From the days where rules
and techniques were learnt from visiting Americans with second hand instruction books, the
game of basketball has prospered across the country. While many of our elite talent have an eye
on global competitions such as the NBA, WNBA or the various European leagues. Indeed many
stellar performances by our junior athletes have led to US college scholarships, North Canterbury
Basketball aims to capitalize on the unique strength of our game at the community level and focus
our ambitions on competitions.
2 NCBA Clothing Catalogue 2020From The Chairman North Canterbury Basketball Association is in an exciting time of growth across the region as basketball continues to flourish and become the most played sport in New Zealand. A part of that growth is the partnership with Paladin to create our on and off court apparel and merchandise for the association. NCBA prides itself on its image, and aims to have a defined brand and appearance across our ‘NC Club’ and ‘North Canterbury Rep’ teams and programs. NC entered 16 teams in to the Canterbury Club competition in 2019, and attracts over 150 players to the gyms across Canterbury on weekends over the winter. This is a dramatic increase in growth from when we had 8 teams in 2016. The representative program has also seen an increase in numbers, with the u13 program have 8 teams participating in local tournaments. This success and growth has been recognized with our 2019 SIPT being awarded North Canterbury Sports Trust ‘Event of the Year’, while various players have gone on to national honours, and US collegiate scholarships. The growth of the game in the North Canterbury region isn’t slowing down, with an increase in numbers expected for the 2020 season across all of our programs. The Waimakiriri District Council has recognized this growth, and the opening of the council owned/operated 4 court facilitate in May 2021 cannot come soon enough for a prospering and vibrant basketball community. We hope you enjoy the new range of gear carefully and specifically created to suit our needs as basketball players, coaches and supporters, and look forward to seeing it being worn courtside and across various locations in the South Island, as often the case with previous NCBA apparel. Make sure you follow us on our social media channels to keep up to date with on goings in NCBA, and send us a picture of you wearing your new NCBA X Paladin apparel. NCBA Clothing Catalogue 2020 3
