The Award for Distinguished Teaching

James A. Windelborn
Jim Windelborn received his bachelor’s degree in
Cell and Structural Biology from the University
of Illinois and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the
University of Wisconsin. In the laboratory, he has
explored the molecular and physiological bases of
diseases of the nervous system that include stroke,
spinal cord injury, and muscular dystrophy.

His devotion to work with undergraduate students
in the laboratory and in the classroom is what
brought him to Washington College. He joined
Washington College in 2014 as a visiting assistant
professor and transitioned to assistant professor
of biology in 2015. Since then, he has built courses
centered on topics such as physiology,
pathophysiology, neurobiology, and cellular signaling. Additionally, he has incorporated
important and universal skills such as collaboration, communication, and critical analysis
into courses that he instructs.

Beyond the classroom, Jim has guided students toward careers in the health professions
through his role as a faculty pre-health advisor. He has also worked closely with the
John S. Toll Research Fellows program to welcome undergraduate research assistants
into his laboratory. He has offered those students the opportunity to become familiar
with the details of laboratory research while also contributing in real ways to the
research program he has developed. Many of those students have presented at conferences
and some have seen their work published in peer-reviewed journals. Finally, Jim has
contributed to the college’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion initiative (led by
faculty, staff, and students) by helping to build and facilitate an anti-racism workshop
for the campus community and for members of the Chestertown community.
Alumni Horizon Ribbon Award

Mollie Binotto ’07
Mollie Binotto is currently the Campaign
Manager for the 2021 Murphy for Governor
Campaign in New Jersey, a statewide election
being held this November 2021.

Since graduating from Washington College in
2007, Mollie has been very active in Federal and
State politics, elections, grassroots advocacy and
issues management. She has managed election
campaigns in numerous states from Alaska to
New Jersey and is recognized nationally by the
Democrat Party as a rising star in campaign work.

Mollie’s work also extends to Capitol Hill
where she remains a member of the Women’s
Congressional Staff Association. She worked with Washington DC-based Emily’s List
as a Field Director, again advocating for women and women’s issues.

After graduating from Upper St. Clair High School in Pittsburgh, PA, Mollie came to
Chestertown and was active in various campus groups. Her work on the Washington
Literary Council at the College was one of the many experiences that prepared her for
her current career.

When she is not on the campaign trail, Mollie lives in Trenton, NJ.
