the welfare of companion animals. It is designed for those people who want to care for animals in
contexts such as pet stores, animal rescue centres, pet groomers, boarding and training facilities,
general pet owners and animal recreation businesses.

This programme also aims to enable students to develop the literacy and numeracy skills relevant to
the animal care industry, and/or for further study.

Graduation Requirements
The NZ Certificate in Animal Care (Level 3) (Companion Animals), will be awarded to students who have
successfully completed all courses.

Compulsory Academic Requirements (CAR)
This programme has no Compulsory Academic Requirements.

Off-Campus Learning
Students may participate in field trips to relevant companion animal care facilities to observe
practitioners in the work environment.

Student Learning Off-Campus Procedure
Student Work Experience and Off-campus Learning Policy

Work Experience/Practicum Policy
All learners are required to complete at least 40 hours in an animal related facility work-placement
where they are exposed to all species required for the programme. The preference is for the 40 hours
to be completed in a minimum of two animal related facilities such as a boarding kennel, cattery, local
SPCA, etc., to ensure they are exposed to different species and practices. These work-placements
provide the contextual environment to enable learners to develop the skills required of a graduate in
the NZ Certificate in Animal Care working with companion animals. All learners are required to have
completed Introduction to Animal Care and Assist in Maintaining an Animal Facility before commencing
any animal related facility work placements.

Learners are provided with documentation which sets out expectations of them at animal related
facilities together with guidance on how to approach and find an acceptable volunteer placement.
Learners who are unable to find their own placement will be supported UCOL to find a suitable
placement. Learners will have completed the introductory course on aspects of health and safety,
hygiene, professional behaviour, animal care and anatomy prior to commencement.

Learners must obtain signed verification from their supervisor/s in their practical workbook for all
animal related work-placements. Their supervisor will record and confirm the number of hours of
practicum the learner has completed.

Refer also to UCOL policies and procedures related to Practicum or Work Experience.

Student Work Experience and Off-campus Learning Policy

A police check is required for all students on enrolment. If the police check identifies an issue that
could affect your ability to gain a work experience placement, you will be counselled before being

It must be stressed that what you will learn at UCOL will not necessarily be duplicated in your work
experience placements.

The following behaviour is expected at all times:
 General appearance must be clean, tidy and acceptable
 Longhair must be tied back
 No jewellery to be worn apart from wedding ring, watch & sleeper-type earrings.
 No visible piercings apart from acceptable earrings
     No visible tattoos
     No visible ‘hickies’
 Your uniform must be clean and tidy (ironed if necessary)

         informed.
 UCOL Student ID cards to be visible at all times.
 Punctuality, courtesy and respect at all times (towards people and property)
 Confidentiality: you must remember that clinics are businesses and your behaviour must not
jeopardise the facility, animal, or person involved in any way.
 Wear protective clothing where appropriate.
 Obey the general rules of the facility, e.g. smoking, if permitted should only be in designated
         areas.

 No task should be undertaken without prior direction from experienced staff. However,
commitment and initiative are expected. You must ask for clarification from the staff if
instructions are not clearly understood. Any other course of action may have severe
repercussions on the welfare and treatment of animals. Follow all instructions carefully and
          diligently.

NO PERSON NOT TRAINED IN THE HANDLING OF AGGRESSIVE OR FRACTIOUS ANIMALS SHOULD BE
INVOLVED IN THE HANDLING OF SAID ANIMAL AND NO TASKS UNDERTAKEN WITHOUT PRIOR
DIRECTION FROM EXPERIENCED STAFF.

 The safety and welfare of the animal is always of paramount importance. Handle all animals so
that they are safe and feel secure. Any task must be carried out with the least possible stress
          upon the animal.
 The person you are assisting must remain safe.
 If you are not sure, ASK. Never continue a task if you are not completely sure of the procedure.
 Maintain the safety of your workplace and yourself. Always use safe working practices. Keep
the work area clean and tidy.
 Dispose of all waste correctly.
 Report when supplies running low, and if appropriate, restock supplies as needed.
 If you are experiencing problems or feel uncomfortable whilst on placement, please notify your
placement supervisor that you need to leave, please explain if you are unwell (no explanation
is required if you are uncomfortable within the workplace). You must then inform the
Programme Leader (Heather Grady) of your situation.
 Read carefully and sign the Student Safety While Handling Animals form (Page 65).

Health and Safety
All matters related to issues of health and safety are detailed in the Student Handbook, and included
in and referred to as part of the programme orientation activities.

Students are informed of UCOL health and safety policy and requirements, including the responsibility
that students have for their own health and safety and those around them, and they are required to
follow UCOL health and safety guidelines at all times. All required safety clothing and footwear must
be worn during practical classes and safety equipment must be used.

Before going on their practicum placements students are specifically briefed with regard to their
responsibility for their own health and safety and the health and safety of those around them in the
context of the placement.

Students with a health problem should advise UCOL on enrolment and should ensure that staff are
aware of the condition and know what to do if help is required.

New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care students are required to sign two forms:
 Standards of Conduct for Work Experience Placements (Appendix 5).
 Student Safety while Handling Animals (Appendix 6).

Refer also to UCOL policies and procedures related to Health and Safety.

Programme Assessment
Assessment Methodology
Assessment is used to encourage, develop and challenge you in your learning. Assessment procedures
are part of the learning tools of the course. The chief purpose of in-course assessment is to detect any

Te Reo Māori
UCOL acknowledges the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and endorses the right of its students to
use Te Reo Māori in assessments. If you are fluent in Te Reo and wish to be assessed in it, you should
inform your lecturers of this at the beginning of the programme. See Assessment in Te Reo Māori
Procedure.

Schedule of Assessment
An assessment schedule for each course will be given out to the students at the beginning of that
course.

If you are absent from a written coursework test due to illness, you may sit a separate test at the earliest
opportunity or as arranged by the Programme Leader, on production of a medical certificate to the
Programme Leader.

Conduct During Assessments
During your study, you are expected to observe and comply with the Academic Statute and all

 Copying from or inappropriate communicating with another person during an exam or
       assessment
 Possessing any unauthorised material during an exam or assessment

Faculty of Health and Sciences - Student Handbook 202x

 Submitting any work for assessment that is not your own and whose author has not been
          acknowledged
      Copying another’s work
 Collaborating with others in the preparation of material, except where this is an assessment
          requirement
 Resubmitting work without prior written approval of the lecturer

Turnitin, or a similar programme, may be used to determine whether you have committed academic
dishonesty. See Conduct of Examinations and Assessments Procedure.

Part VIII of the Academic Statute outlines the disciplinary proceedings that apply should you breach
these rules.

Extensions
Extensions for an assessment can only be granted prior to the assessment due date in exceptional
circumstances. These circumstances may include:
 Sickness – in which case a medical certificate must be presented to the lecturer.
 Bereavement – in which case the lecturer must be informed as soon as possible.
 Extenuating circumstances – these circumstances must be explained to the lecturer and proof
        may be required.

An application for an extension must be submitted to your lecturer in writing using the Appendix 2 –
Request for Extension form at the back of this handbook. It can also be made in electronic form via
email which must include all the information required by the form.

You will receive notification of the outcome once your lecturer has reached a decision. Extensions will
be for seven (7) days only unless stated otherwise.
Where an extension has been granted, and the extension deadline has been met, no penalties will apply.
Your assessment will be marked and feedback provided in the same way as if the assessment was
submitted on the original date and time.

Penalties for Late Submissions
In the event of a student being unable to attend or hand in an assessment, a medical (or comparable)
certificate is required. Students who do not attend, or hand in an assessment by the scheduled
assessment time and who do not offer such a certificate will be deemed to have voluntarily missed the
assessment. Generally, this will mean that these students will have only one more opportunity to be
assessed for a result in that particular assessment.

The following conditions apply to all late submissions of assessments that do not have an approved
extension:
 All assessment work received after the due date and time, and not subject to a lecturer-
approved extension, will attract a penalty.
 The penalty for late submission is relegation to a single opportunity to successfully achieve in
the assessment in question. Generally, this opportunity must be taken at the same time as
others who are scheduled to complete their one resit entitlement, ie, after their unsuccessful
        attempt at the same assessment.
 Any late submitted (first submission) assessment task will be returned unmarked prior to the
student resubmitting on the remaining single opportunity.

Faculty of Health and Sciences - Student Handbook 202x
NZ2487 New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care (Companion Animals) Level 3 20
 The single opportunity to successfully achieve will only be granted if it can be determined there
will be no advantage to the student submitting the late assessment or disadvantage to students
who have submitted the work on time.
 If the student does not undertake the assessment on the reassigned due date and time, and/or
does not complete the assessment successfully, there will usually be no further resit
opportunities and a ‘D’ or ‘E’ or ‘F’ result will be entered for the assessment.

Reconsideration of Results
Any assessment may be reconsidered if a student believes that a particular outcome for an assessment
is unreasonable or has been incorrectly assessed.

Within five calendar days of the return of the assessment, the student must return the script or other
work to the lecturer responsible for the course with a written request for reconsideration. This request
must specify the parts of the assessment that are to be reconsidered and give reasons why
reconsideration is sought.

A ‘Reconsideration of Assessment Form’ is provided in the Student Handbook. Students must be
informed that, as a result of the reconsideration of assessment, their result may be unchanged, raised
or lowered (refer to UCOL Academic Statute).

Appendix 3 – Request for Reconsideration of Result

The reconsidered result will be recorded as the final result. Students still have the right to appeal this
result in accordance with the UCOL Academic Statute.

Resubmits and Resits
Students must attend all scheduled assessments. In the event of a student being unable to attend an
assessment, a medical (or comparable) certificate is required. Students who do not attend the
scheduled assessment time and who do not offer such a certificate will be deemed to have voluntarily
missed the assessment.

There is one resit opportunity available in each course. Resits are completed within a short time
frame (usually no more than 5 working days) and must be completed within the timing of the course
to which the assessment relates. Resits will be available to learners who have made a genuine
attempt at the first assessment opportunity.

Appendix 4 – Request for Resubmit/Resit

Special Passes
Applications for special passes are accepted and considered under the terms of the UCOL Academic
Statute.

The four types of Special Passes are:
 Aegrotat Pass: awarded when you are unable to present work for assessment at the time it is
due, you are unable to attend a test or examination, or your performance is seriously impaired
        in a test or examination.
 Conceded Pass: awarded when you have otherwise reached an acceptable standard in the
programme but have narrowly failed one course, thus affecting your ability to complete the
        qualification.

Faculty of Health and Sciences - Student Handbook 202x
NZ2487 New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care (Companion Animals) Level 3 21
 Conditional Pass: awarded when you have marginally failed to meet the required academic
standard but in all other aspects have demonstrated an ability to meet it.
 Restricted Pass: awarded when you have marginally failed to meet the required academic
standard for the course and, if awarded, does not qualify you to enrol in a subsequent
course/programme for which a pass in the original course is a pre-requisite.

If you are interested in requesting a Special Pass, contact your lecturer. Programme curriculum
regulations and other conditions may apply.

Academic Appeals
The UCOL Academic Statute details the academic appeals process.

Inability to Meet Programme Requirements
Under certain circumstances, an individual study contract may be drawn up to encourage you to meet
programme requirements. Any failure to meet this contract may result in you being asked to leave the
programme.

If you have a serious health problem or other personal circumstances that impact on your ability to
meet programme requirements, please inform your Lecturer.

Remember, if you are having difficulties with your programme there are ways UCOL can help you. If
you do decide to withdraw, you must complete a Change of Circumstances Form. These can be
obtained from the Information Centre.

Appendix 5 – Standards of Conduct
Standards of Conduct for Work Experience Placements

NZ Certificate in Animal Care students are expected to read and abide by the following standards at all
times.
As representatives of the animal care programme, students shall conduct themselves in a professional
manner and follow instructions given to them by the person(s) in charge of the work experience
establishment.
The following behaviour is expected:
1. Clean and neat appearance. Standard clinical uniform is to be worn.
(NB. except as directed by animal care placements).
2. UCOL ID Cards must be visible at all times (as appropriate).
3. Punctuality, courtesy and respect at all times.
4. Obey the rules of the establishment, eg. smoking and/or eating on the premises.
Take only official lunch and tea breaks. Provide your own meals and refreshments.
5. Confidentiality: it is important to remember that most of these establishments are businesses and
your behaviour must not jeopardise the establishment, animals or persons involved in any way.
6. Your conduct should be such that it will not jeopardise the chances of future students using that
     particular establishment.
7. No task should be undertaken without prior direction from experienced staff. However,
commitment and initiative are expected. Students must ask for clarification from the owner,
clinician or veterinary nurse if instructions are not clearly understood. Any other course of action
may have severe repercussions on the welfare and treatment of the animals.
No person not trained in handling of aggressive or fractious animals should be involved in the
handling of said animal and no task undertaken without prior direction from experienced staff.
8. ASK if you are not sure about how to undertake a task. Only continue a task if you are completely
     sure of the procedure.
Follow the established workplace protocols. If you have concerns about these ensure your
questions are asked at a convenient time and not in the public eye.

Appendix 6 – Student Safety While Handling Animals
Student Safety While Handling Animals

Specific information will be given to you as you proceed through your training. The information in
Introduction to Animal Care and Assisting in Maintaining the Animal Facility will become most relevant.
It is appropriate to make you aware that handling animals is sometimes dangerous, and you are
required to sign this document to indicate your appreciation of this situation.

1. All animals can be potentially harmful and handling animals is sometimes precarious. You must
take the time to approach and talk to each animal before handling it.
2. No person not trained in handling of aggressive or fractious animals should be involved in the
handling of said animal and no task undertaken without prior direction from experienced staff.
3. Closed footwear must be worn on all 'animal' work experience placements.
4. Talk to the animals while you move or handle them so they are constantly aware of your presence
and position. By acting like this, your movements or contact will not surprise them or be less likely
      to surprise the animal concerned.
4. Your tetanus vaccination needs to be up to date.
6. If a student on work placement contracts a contagious disease, then the student must immediately
inform both the supervisor of the work experience establishment and the Programme Leader at
UCOL and obtain medical treatment. The student will return to the clinical placement only after
consultation with the Programme Leader. A UCOL incident report must be completed.
7. If a student is bitten or badly scratched, the wound should be immediately scrubbed with surgical
disinfectant and water. Such an injury must be reported to both the supervisor and Leader. A
UCOL incident report must be completed, and a work experience establishment accident form if
      applicable to that establishment.

Students must also be aware that accidents/incidents can occur while on work experience.

Students must comply with local work experience establishment OSH requirements. Should any
accident or incident that could cause harm occur while you are on work experience you must notify
both your supervisor and the Programme Leader. A UCOL incident report must be completed.

I acknowledge that danger exists when handling animals and understand that no animal is to be handled
without prior instruction from either the lecturer, workplace establishment supervisor or Animal Care
facility Staff.

I also acknowledge that I will notify the Programme Leader should an accident/incident occur as soon
as is practicable.
