Welcome
The Challenge Wanaka Sports Trust welcomes all athletes to
Wanaka and we trust you enjoy your time in the region. Our
Festival of Triathlon has events for the whole family with a large
focus on introducing young people to the wonderful sport of
triathlon.

Who Can Enter
Open to all school children year 7 through to 13
No qualification anyone can enter
Must be a minimum of 10 years old and maximum of 18 years old
at 1st January 2020
Road Bikes and Mountain Bikes allowed
Sanctioned by TRINZ
Remember as a participant in this event you are responsible for
your own safety and equipment

Registration – Individual/ Teams
• You can enter online before 12th February , after 12th February will
  incur a late entry fee of $20
• Registration will be in our Challenge Wanaka Expo area next to the
  main tent. You will not be able to get entry into the main Marquee as
  it will be in use for the Challenge Wanaka Half and Aquabike
  recovery area
• You will collect your race numbers, swim cap, timing chip and a gift
  from the Challenge Family
• There will be transition tours at 2pm and 3pm Saturday 15th February
• T-shirts will be handed out at the finish line

• You can enter online before 12th February , after 12th February
  will incur a late entry fee of $20
• Registration will be in our Challenge Wanaka Expo area next to
  the main tent. You will not be able to get entry into the main
  Marquee as it will be in use for the Challenge Wanaka Half and
  Aquabike recovery area
• Registrations will be taken on Saturday for the Tag Team Relay
  to be part of a composite team.
• You will collect your race numbers and timing chips on Sunday
  between 10-11am at the registration tent.
Briefings
• Remember it is your responsibility to know the course
• We will have an event App which will have maps and
  information updated closer to race day
 - please go to the App Store and get this for free
• There will be a short briefing before the start of each event
  which you must attend
• Maps will be displayed at the registration tent

Event Parking – for Competitors
• We have parking for competitors on Pembroke Park, access is
  off Dungarvon Street.
• Parking is for a gold coin donation to local sports clubs
• Please park where told by our parking crew
• Non Competitor parking is on the A&P Showground at the end
  of McDougall Street
Race Equipment
• We strongly recommend you to wear your appropriate school
  sports uniform and be part of a team. (Tri suits, togs, singlets, t-
  shirts, etc)
• Though some of you will have NZ Age Group uniforms we do
  not feel it is appropriate to wear at a NZ Secondary Schools
  event when you are representing your school, not NZ.
• Remember you must have your torso covered on the bike and
  run legs. During the swim males may have a bear torso but
  must put something on before leaving the transition
Swim
• The swim for all individual and team events will be one lap. Competitors will walk down the beach to
  the swim start, all will be a beach start.
• Intermediate – (200m) swim out 50metres, along 100 metres and back in 50 metres
• U14/U16 – (300m)swim out 75 metres, along 150 metres and back in 75 metres
• U19 – (600m) swim out 150metres, along 300 metres and back in 150 metres
• Please keep all buoys on your right shoulder.
• When you have completed your swim exit the swim course, follow the red carpet to the gantry
  across the road into transition
• You will receive a swim cap in your race pack
• No fins, paddles, snorkels or other flotation devices are allowed
• There will be a water safety team out on the lake to look after you on paddleboards, kayaks and
  IRBs.
• Raise one arm above your head if you are in distress or need assistance.
• Swim may be with or without a wetsuit. Expected water temperature is 16 degrees.
Bike Course
• The Bike course consists of out and back laps within a fenced course.
• It is 2.5km per lap and you need to count your own laps. We will have a timing
  mat on the course to make sure everyone does the correct number of laps but it
  is your responsibility to count them.
• There will be cones to signify the centre of the course and you must ALWAYS ride
  on the left of these cones, or you will be disqualified.
• Athletes need to ride within their ability in order to turn safely, especially if it is
  wet.
• We have a mixture of fully and partially closed road, athletes need to be aware of
  any vehicles on course, event or public.
• Athletes must ride as far to the left as possible and always pass on the right.
• The course will be marshalled and monitored by technical officials to keep it safe
  and fair.
Bike Course
• Intermediate and U14 are non-drafting races. You must keep 10m between
  your front wheel and the rear wheel of the person in front of you.
• U16 and U19 races are draft legal, however no drafting may occur
  between genders. Therefore no males drafting off females or females off
  males.
• You must wear a helmet at all times during the cycle leg.
• Remember to have your torso covered – this can be togs, tri-suit, t-shirt
  etc.
• Race numbers – you will be given race number stickers for your bike. It is
  optional to wear your paper bib number on the bike but it must be worn
  during the run.
• Bike checks – NO

  friendly team at Racers Edge, Ardmore Street.

Run Course
• After racking your bike, you will head out on the run course. The run
  is a 1km loop of which you will do a multiple of times depending on
  your age group.
• You need to count your own laps as with the bike leg.
• As you finish your final lap head across the red carpet and under the
  finish gantry in the middle of the transition area.
• There will be an aid station which will have cups of water available at
  the end of each lap as well as water stations available at the finish
  line. Please ensure you discard your cup near the aid station.
• Remember to have your torso covered during the run section.
• The run is a mixture of tarseal and tracks.
Summary of Rules
The race will be conducted under Triathlon NZ rules. This is a sanctioned event.
• You must obey race officials at all times and treat other competitors, officials and volunteers with
  respect and courtesy; there is no race without them.
• Do not accept assistance from anyone not competing in the race
• You may not wear headphones or digital music devices
• You must not be paced by coaches or supporters
• You must have your torso covered during the cycle and run sections. This can be in the form of your
  togs, a singlet or t-shirt etc
• Keep your gear close by your bike so others do not trip over or get held up by it.
• Remember in the U16 and U19, you may only draft with same gender athletes
• Do not discard anything on the course, including bottles. You can discard in your transition area
  only, but please clear your rubbish when you leave.
• If you deliberately impede the progress of another competitor you will be disqualified.
• No personal equipment is to be removed from transition until the transition technical official opens
  transition (for each event)
• Protests must be lodged with the Head Referee within 30 minutes of the race completion. Only the
  Head Referee has the authority to deal with protests, do not ask marshals or other volunteers.
Tag Team Relay
• Teams must have 2 male and 2 female entrants in the same age category.
  Team members can be from two different schools for a Championship
  race.
• There will be an option to enter as a non-Championship team if the team is
  made up of entrants from more than two schools.
• All Team members must have their bikes racked by the transition closing
  time. You will rack your bikes as a team so you will all be next to each
  other.
• You will each receive a bib number, this must be worn at all times during
  the cycle and run section. You will each receive the same number but it will
  have A, B, C, D on it. A means the first person in your team and D means
  the last person in your team.
• The team tag area is the chute beside the finish chute (closest to the lake)
  where you will need to wait for your team member that you are tagging.
