Should You Go to the Emergency Room, call 911, go to an Urgent Care or a Walk-In Clinic?
from Bill Weinstein, MD for the Emergency Preparedness Committee HEBGC
All too often, illness or injury appears out of the blue: You wake up in the middle of the night with intense abdominal or chest
pain, you have weakness or shortness of breath or you fall down.

When these situations occur, we’re often faced with uncertainty about where to go for care, especially if the symptoms seem severe
and your regular doctor’s office is closed. While the answer is not always simple, knowing the difference between walk-in clinics,
urgent care, emergency care or 911 and where to seek treatment could save your life in a medical emergency. There are distinct
differences between these facilities.

Urgent care or walk-in clinics help fill a vital gap when you become sick or injured, your regular doctor is not available, and you
can’t wait for an appointment. Walk-in clinics offer convenient same-day care for minor
illnesses e.g. mild flu-like symptoms, cough, congestion, sore throat or ears, eye redness
painful urination or rashes without fever. Urgent care centers can treat vomiting or OLD TIMER

if you don’t quite need an emergency room. Dispatch Health (720-647-5329 or
website) has qualified practitioners who can provide in-home urgent treatment for most
conditions covered in urgent care and they accept most major health insurances 7 days a

Emergency rooms are available when life or limb are at risk. The staff is ready 24/7 and
can treat chest pain, difficulty breathing, weakness on one side of your body or face,
slurred speech, fainting/change in mental state, serious burns, head or eye injuries,
concussions, confusion, seizures or significant injuries or bleeding. There are 3 ER
facilities near HEBGC: Saddle Rock off of Gartrell at E470, Southlands ER and St.

Special message from Clint Smythe –
By now, more of you will have heard that Toni and I are moving to Las Cruces, NM and away from our wonderful and treasured friends
at HEBGC after living here for almost 13 years. This was certainly not planned, and just happened; perhaps something that was meant
to be! Our younger daughter and son-in-law moved from Flagstaff to Las Cruces last May. We decided that this was an opportunity
for us to spend some of the winter and spring months away in warmer pastures. We celebrated a wonderful week in LC with them over
Thanksgiving. The afternoon before our next-day flight home, Lindsay drove Toni by a small housing development near NMSU to check it
out (about 10 minutes away from their home). One house stood out from the others! We met the realtor the next morning (before heading
to El Paso), and had a tour of the 10-year old house. You can imagine I was not expecting to be impressed at all, let alone the thought of
moving, but it was truly love at first sight for both of us. So, we have bought in LC and are selling here, with plans to escape the summer
heat in LC and to appreciate the milder weather here in beautiful CO, enjoy our older daughter, Nicole, son-in-law, and two grandchildren,
and keep in touch with you. You may see me at an HEBGC Community blood drive or two! You will agree with me that June has done a
tremendous job of leading our very successful blood drives these past three years (Vitalant’s Sarah Miller and her blood drive staff are tireless
and are much appreciated), and I am sure with your continued and dedicated blood donation support, that HEBGC will continue to be one
of Vitalant’s premier Community Blood Drive Hosts in the years to come. We could not have been successful without the superb support of
HEBGC’s management, leadership and behind the scenes staff who helped make it all work. It has been my pleasure and privilege to
live and serve in our community with such amazing and talented friends! Thank you so much; I am going to miss you.

Center for Active Learning (CAL) by Diane Woods, CAL Secretary and Current Chair
CAL, which stands for Center for Active Learning, is an HEB committee that offers
courses for life-long learning—and we do it three Terms a year. As the Chair of CAL, I would like to
introduce you to our talented and dedicated Lead Team. We are the volunteers who make it happen.

 The Seven Leads for CAL:
  1. Curriculum Lead. Peggy Calhoun does a marvelous job of
finding Facilitators to teach our classes—she encourages
them, makes suggestions, and helps them get started. She
     also develops course ideas.
  2. Facilitator Lead. Peter Livshin helps the Facilitators refine
their course descriptions before submittal to Registration.
He also helps figure out the schedule for the term, arranges
for rooms, and sees that the Facilitators have everything they
     need.
  3. Operations Lead. Among many other tasks, Vicki Hoffman
prepares the master schedule/timeline for each Term
and prepares the class descriptions and graphics for the 2020 CAL LEAD TEAM

  5. Publicity Lead. Gary Pollard is our publicity person. He
writes the CAL announcements and articles that you see in While we do not have any openings on the Lead Team now,
the Newsletter, the eblasts, Nextdoor, etc. we will be looking for successors eventually. We would like to

Monday Night Fun Group

T
he new year has arrived, and with it snow and cold weather, so very few opportunities to get on our course and have some
fun. For those of you anxious to practice your swing, and don't have the opportunity to head south for a few days, Top Golf
is nearby, and a fun place to hit the little white ball. Their food, drinks, and service are excellent, and they even have heaters.
You don't have to look for your ball, just wave your golf club, and another ball magically appears. We are targeting the last Monday
in April for the start of the 2020 season. For our new residents, MFG plays a 4 person 9 hole scramble perfect for players of all
levels. After golf we enjoy a delicious buffet. We try to pair our players each week with different participants so everyone has an
opportunity to meet new people in a fun setting. Again, perfect for those new to the 'hood, and/or those that have not played for
awhile. Enjoy the rest of the winter, ski great, and we will see you on the links as soon as possible.
