MARKET NEWS Canadian Dairy Commission Price Increase The Canadian Dairy Commission (CDC) offers a framework for managing Canada’s dairy industry, a shared federal and provincial responsibility. It serves as a facilitator in forums that influence Canada’s dairy policy. The CDC monitors dairy production to avoid shortages or surpluses, and mandate fair trade for milk producers. In October 2021, the CDC conducted a review of Canadian farm gate milk prices and various other costs used in administering the supply management system. As a result, the CDC intends to implement the following price increases on February 1, 2022. • 8.4% for Farm gate milk • 12.4% for Butter The increase is a result of the rise in cost of production due to the COVID-19 pandemic mainly in areas such as feed, energy, and fertilizer. The increase in the cost to processors will depend on the butterfat and solids non-fat content of the product they manufacture. The new farm gate milk prices will become official once they are approved by provincial authorities in early December 2021. Visit the CDC site to learn more: https://cdc-ccl.ca/index.php/en/news/latest-news/latest- news-for-2021/farm-gate-milk-prices-to-be-increased Please be advised this will impact certain SKUs by suppliers in the dairy industry. INSIGHTS Beverage Trends Over the decades we can see how the beverage industry has grown into the robust category it is today, constantly mixing things up – literally! With food trends constantly influencing flavour profiles, convenience, and health, beverage has been a worthy advocate. Here’s a look at top items in the market. Alternative Milk Just as plant-based meats have flourished in the market, plant-based milk beverages were not far behind. With an increase in reducing global footprints and being evermore environmentally conscious, products such as oat and almond milk have increased in demand. Smoothies & Juices For health reasons and convenience, smoothies and juices have become the grab n’ go go-to for many with busy active schedules. The flavour combinations and ingredients are endless when it comes to creating these delicious and nutritious beverages. Umami Cocktails Walking in foods’ footsteps, beverages were quick to follow the umami craze. Umami food and beverages has often been described as containing savory elements. While a savory cocktail may sound strange, beverages such as martinis with a splash of olive brine or a bloody Mary with a glove of garlic and a dash of horseradish can be quite an explosion of flavour. Cold Brewed Coffee It’s delicious. Need we say more? Cold brewed coffee is coffee that has been steeped over a long period of time, not brewed. One of the benefits of making coffee this way, is it is still simple to impart other flavours but allows you to enjoy a cool refreshing caffeinated treat. Infused Teas Many turn to a cup of soothing tea for medicinal purposes such as reducing stress, boosting your immune system, and getting a better night’s rest. While this is not a new trend, it has become more prevalent showcasing exotic ingredients such as ginger, licorice root, or turmeric. Cocktail Kits These have allowed consumers to bring the bar right into their own living room, and a chance to play bartender at that. With people staying at home more, this gained tremendous popularity. Restaurants, and liquor brands, quickly jumped on board during the onset of the pandemic by offering signature drinks in a take-home format. www.foodbuy.ca
