Hello Volunteers!
As the new event cycle gears up, we wanted to acknowledge all that you do to deliver exceptional experiences to
our visiting guests here and outside our gates. Your efforts make us proud at all our events, and when you help those
who reach out to us in need you demonstrate the generous heart of every Northlands volunteer.
On behalf of our Board and staff, thank you for helping transport families from Ronald McDonald House to the
Stollery Children’s Hospital since May of 2015. We are very proud of how you stepped up to assist these families
during a difficult time.
We admire your willingness to lend a hand at events like the Winspear’s Symphony in the City, the Autism Speaks
Canada Walk, Edmonton Garrison Military Family Resource Center Charity Golf Tournament and the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Light the Night Walk. It means so much every time you help a not-for-profit organization.
Our Northlands Board of Directors approved the new strategic plan on December 17, at their last meeting of 2015.
You can expect to see more information and other exciting details about what this will mean for us released before
the end of the first quarter.
With your continued support, we expect that this year’s Canadian College Finals Rodeo will be fondly remembered.
Of course, we’re all looking forward to making many new and special memories with you in 2016!

EXECUTIVE PROFILE

As the new Vice-President of Business Development at Northlands,
my experience with our volunteers already shows what a large and
passionate heart is at work here. The depth and breadth of this
volunteer team speaks volumes to me.

Before joining Northlands, I spent 23 years working across the spectrum
of the banking industry across Canada ending with Genworth Canada
as their Vice President for the Prairies Region.

Financial industry aside, some of my very best memories come from the
volunteer roles I’ve held. I began volunteering as a fire fighter in Nova
Scotia. From there, I was hooked on helping, so I lent a hand to a Critical
Incident Stress team, then a Teen Mom and Dad board, and so on.

Each experience has given me a deep sense of fulfillment. I am most proud of having spent years volunteering as a
military officer in the sub-reserve. Knowing that I made a difference in my community was good, but I’m grateful the
Canadian Military never had to depend on my combat skills!

My husband and parents, and our four West Highland Terriers enjoy Edmonton and all that it has to offer. I have
enjoyed my time here at Northlands immensely and I can’t wait to work together with you as we strive to make new
memories with each other and for every guest to cherish.

 Remembers
It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of June Cavanagh on
December 29, 2015. As a supporter and volunteer of Northlands, many volunteers
may remember June’s time with us.

Betty Loree recalls when June brought her onto the parade committee and
remembers her as “a lady with a big heart and a huge Northlands fan.” Having sat
on City Council, and as the wife of Edmonton’s former Mayor and City Councilor
Terry Cavanagh, June enjoyed a rich and exciting life. We are saddened by June’s
passing, and send our deepest sympathies to Terry and his family.

It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of Leigh Frances Smith
on December 16, 2015. Leigh had been a volunteer with Northlands for over 38
years and was very proud to have her two sons Brandan and Mac, and her mother
Betty Haugen volunteer with her as well. Leigh was a dedicated volunteer for the
Monday Morning Magic program which her dad founded in 1977. On behalf of
all Northlands volunteers and staff we extend our deepest sympathy to Leigh’s
husband Dean, sons Brandan and Mac, mother Betty and brothers Rick and Tom.

The theme Get Inspired! was on the banner that

I met colleagues and made connections with individuals
