Stay clear of fallen wireS
• If you do spot a fallen wire, keep at least 10m
away, even if it doesn’t appear to be live. Report
it to the police and Orillia Power.
• If you do spot a fallen wire that appears to have
fallen due to a tree, do not attempt to remove
the tree from the line. Keep at least 10m away
from the fallen tree and the line.
• If a wire falls across your car while you’re in it,
don’t get out. Wait for an Orillia Power crew to
come and safely remove it. Remember, both the
car and the ground around it may be electrified.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As president of the Orillia and District Construction
Association (ODCA) I am pleased to present this directory
representing our members of ODCA.
We are a leading trade association for the construction
industry in the Orillia and surrounding areas. We are an
organization that inspires active membership through
professional development by providing training and monthly
member meetings allowing our members to be informed of
upcoming legislation and community events.
Our Members are selected by the board through a review
process which includes ODCA Core Values. This includes
quality workmanship, professionalism, to provide a safe work
environment for their staff and customers, and to provide
excellent customer service.
When hiring local contractors from this trade directory
you are hiring a company that has agreed to follow the
organizations Core Values.
Our strategic plan is to provide the best information from
local and regional levels to our members that will allow
them to make the right decisions, to promote networking
opportunities, to promote growth to our members, to
promote training opportunities that align with the Ministry of
Labour requirements, and to due our part in providing labour
with our skilled work force for local community project once
a Year.
This is my second Year as President and we will continue to
implement a Youth program with our local Schools that will
interest more Youth towards the trades. With the help of
Orillia’s Chief Building Official, Kelly Smith and the Board have
launched the “Introduction to Construction” through Parks
and Rec for young children to learn about the trades.
We have a program Each Year where we provide scholarships
to local students who either plan to or are pursuing post
secondary training in the trades. This Year we will joined
with the Orillia Manufacturing Association with “ Explore the
Trades” to allow students to review local companies booth
and learn about the Trades.
We welcome new members who are associated with the
construction industry and I personally look forward to talking
with new members who want to join our organization.

When do you need
a building permit?
Decks, greater than 100 sq. ft.,
fireplaces or woodstoves inside
a building, porches, sunrooms,
carports, garages, dormers,
additions, fences around pools,
septic systems, plumbing, new or
structural alterations to windows
and doors ( straight replacement
exempt), solar panels on roof, the
addition or removal of interior
walls and finishing basements.
Work that does not require a
building permit includes:
Air conditioners, pool heaters,
painting, landscaping, fences,
re-roofing, eavestrough, damp-
proofing basements, kitchen or
bathroom cupboard changes,
satellite dishes,and re-siding.
Who can do the drawings to go
with the Building Permit?
A property owner of a single
family home or a duplex can
do their own drawings. Multi
residential buildings and
commercial buildings require
drawings completed by a
designer with a BCIN from the
Ministry of Housing.
If you hire someone to complete
your drawings they require
a BCIN from the Ministry of
Housing.

Pool
Requirements
When planning a swimming pool
on your property, it is important
to know the rules about fencing
around the pool. Each municipality
writes it’s own by-laws and it is wise
to contact the municipality to learn
all the requirements. Here are a few
important pieces of information to
help you begin.
City of Orillia
Any swimming pool that can hold
more than 12” of water requires
a fence around it. The fence is to
be a minimum of 4’ high and non-
climbable. All gates require self
closers and locks.
Township of Severn
Any swimming pool that can hold
1 metre (3.2’) of water requires a
fence around it. The fence is to be
a minimum of 1.2m (3.9’) high for
pools up to 1.2m deep. The fence is
to be a minimum of 1.5m (4.9’) high
for pools deeper than 1.2m. All gates
require locks.
Township of Oro Medonte

1. Should be written on company stationery and include
company name, address, phone numbers, and license number
(if applicable).
2. Should contain the customer name, address, phone number,
and location of the project (where work is to be performed).
3. Date should be when written. Both party signatures
should be on the contract with date signed.
4. Work to be performed should be detailed. In some cases,
identify items, which were discussed but are now not to be
included.
5. Provide dollar amounts for each item and task to be included
in the project. Include specifics of any margin to be applied
to material costs or overall project cost. Specify and taxes
applicable.
6. Should include an anticipated start date with a time line for
completion. Completion target date should be included
however it may not be a fixed date.
7. Includes a payment schedule.
8. States which permits are required and who will be
responsible for obtaining them.
9. Should indicate a process for documenting changes to the
work specified.
10. Contractor should offer proof of insurance or WSIB is asked.

SELECTING A
CONTRACTOR
To help you select the right contractor for you, the one that will help
keep your experience a satisfying one, use this checklist:

1. Is the Contractor registered according to provincial and municipal
❏ ❏ laws as well as a member of the local Association? Does he/she
have a license?
❏ ❏ 2. Does the Contractor have sufficient insurance coverage (Workers
Compensation or Liability Insurance) to protect your interests and
those of the onsite workers?
❏ ❏ 3. Does the Contractor use the Ontario Building Code as a minimum
standard for all work? Are there certain items he/she will do
which are better than the code, which will enhance your project?
❏ ❏ 4. Do the years of being in business and levels of experience
indicated by the builder satisfy your needs?
❏ ❏ 5. Does the contractor provide you with a written contract/estimate/
quote with details?
❏ ❏ 6. Has the Contractor provided references for work completed with
other customers?
❏ ❏ 7. Will the Contractor obtain necessary Permits and Approvals for
your project, or will this be your responsibility?
❏ ❏ 8. Is he Contractor familiar with the area regulations and the various
Planning and Building Department protocols and processes?
❏ ❏ 9. Does the Contractor offer a warranty and describe all items
covered?
❏ ❏ 10. Does the Contractor hire subcontractors for certain work, and are
they licensed trades people?
❏ ❏ 11. Does the Contractor have a process to record any changes
requested and approved by you for your project?
❏ ❏ 12. Does the Contractor have a pleasant business-like manner and
are you comfortable with him/her?
❏ ❏ 13. Does the Contractor provide “after project” completion service?
Will he/she be there for you if there is a need?

Often, the best recommendations for your contractor can be already satis-
fied customers. Ask for references and be sure to make contact with them.
If possible, visit at least one of the referred projects provided the owner is
willing and available to proudly show their project.
ASK QUESTIONS:
• Was the project completed on time?
• Are you satisfied with the results?
• Did you and your contractor communicate well
throughout the project?
• Were there cost overruns?
• Were the workers courteous and on time?
• Was the project site kept clean every day?
• Were there any health and safety issues?
