Thoughts from Governor Dean Carruthers
We are now at the half way point of our Lions year. Dis-
trict OH 1 has been doing great with membership but can always do
better so please do not stop recruiting new members.
The District Convention registration form and the program
Ad form are included in this news letter or at the District web site.
Please sign up and reserve your room so we have a great conven-
tion. We have a great speaker for the Saturday noon meal Jay Gray
from Pilot Dogs. His program is Pilot Dogs then & now. Each club is
asked to bring 2 items for the raffle at the convention.
We will be voting on District Governor, First & Second
Vice District Governor. If there are any former Zone Chairpersons
who would be interested in being a candidate for Second Vice Dis-
trict Governor, please contact District Governor Dean. You will also
need to submit your letter of interest and a letter support & endorse-
ment from your club. We will also be voting for a District Representative to the State Finance &
Planning Committee.
I have started my official visits to the clubs of the district. I am asking the President, Secre-
tary or program chairperson to contact me, so we can schedule a date & time for my visit to your

Communications from VDG Don Wiechart
Merry New Year my fellow Lions of District OH1, Lions at large and all others
who may be perusing our newsletter. Now before you correct me, like Clarence
Beeks of Lyndhurst Security corrected Billy Ray Valentine in the movie Trading Plac-
es, I know its Happy New Year. So Happy New Year my fellow Lions.
We start our new calendar year as we also reach the midpoint of our Lion Year. It
is a good time to take stock and review what goals and objectives you and your club
are meeting and where you might be currently coming up a little short and need to
refocus some attention. As you focus on your club meeting and events there are two
events that you also will want to attend so register and mark your calendars: The
Ohio Lions Winter Retreat will be nearby at Maumee Bay State Park on January 18-
20 and our District OH1 convention will be February 22 and 23 in Findlay. I look for-
ward to seeing many of you there.
I’ll close today by simply saying, best of luck in the second half of the Lion Year
and best of luck in 2019 my fellow OH1Lions. If you need me for anything always
feel free to contact me.

Thoughts From 2VDG Ashley Schmunk
Greetings fellow Lions!
As the time for the OH1 District Convention rapidly approaches, you may still
be deciding if you will be going. I urge any Lion who can to attend. I have too
many good memories of past Conventions to mention them all, so here are a
just few pictures from past conventions.
Good food and prizes may not be the main attraction, but there will be plenty
of these. Shown here is last year’s winning peace poster and some of the door
prizes.
Of course we will attend to District business and elections. There will be train-
ing to help Lions to be more effective in their service. Pictured is last year’s of-
ficer’s training class.
There will be inspiring speakers like ID Jennifer Ware who was our Interna-
tional Guest last year.
Conventions are an opportunity to meet new Lions and see some you haven’t
seen in a while. Lions Grandma and Grampa (the Smiths) smile with Internation-
al Guests.
Everybody who has ever planned an event knows that volunteers are worth
their weight in gold. We don’t pass out gold, but there will be a lot of district
awards to recognize so much service.
Here is Lion Mom (PDG Sheryl) presenting an award to Lion Darlene. This
year Lion Darlene has been doing very rewarding work as president of NWOLECF.
Lion Deb and Lion Jessica got awards last year. Lion Jessica is always a big hit with the Lion Cubs with art, movies,
and snacks. Lions From Zone A, B, & C will remember the talk Lion Deb gave us on pediatric cancer and STEPS. With
or without an award these Lions are winners!

Lions of District 13 OH 1, This is a notice to all Lions of District 13 OH 1 to announce that the Dis-
trict Convention is set to begin Friday evening, February 22, 2019 and conclude Saturday evening, February 23, 2019
with DG Dean Carruthers’s Grand Banquet.
All Lions are invited to attend.
This is a notice to all Lions of District 13 OH 1 that may want to run for election for the position of Finance/
Long Range Planning State Committee District OH 1 Chair. If you have any interested please submit a letter of
intent to run to DG Dean Carruthers and CS PDG Sheryl Burnette.
Also up for elected positions are:

Treasurer Position - Northwest Ohio Lions Eye Care Founda-
tion (NWOLECF)
Lions of District OH1, at our November Northwest Ohio Lions Eyecare Foundation meeting, PDG Craig Gauger indi-
cated he would be stepping down as treasurer and that occurred shortly before Christmas.
If you are a Lion in District OH1 or know of a Lion in the District who would be willing and knowledgeable to
serve as treasurer in this volunteer position or if you have questions regarding the position, please contact Li-
on Darlene Roll, Foundation president, at droll1998@gmail.com.
We hope to fill this position quickly.

Northwest Ohio Lions Eye Care Foundation
(NWOLECF) News
At the Nov. 28, 2018 meeting attended by 15 clubs the Foundation reviewed 5 cases; Cataract surgery for one eye
of 59 year old man from Toledo was approved.
The request for help purchasing biotics glasses was completed for a young man from Lake Township so that he could
drive.
A CCTV request were approved for a man from Weston. Lions Bob Segna and PDG Craig Gauger installed the unit.
Three requests were placed on hold awaiting further information; CCTV for female from Defiance, cataract surgery for
man from Toledo and unspecified surgery request from woman in Defiance.
IPDG Bill Niejadlik, 13-OH1 Sight & Hearing Chair, reported that they are working with Prevent Blindness Ohio (PBO)
to provide glasses in areas where there is no Lions Club. They also hope to find a legal way to bypass HIPAA re-
strictions against contact with parents of a child who was referred to see if they obtained glasses.
All Lions in District 13-OH1 are reminded that they are also members of the Northwest Ohio Lions Eye Care Founda-
tion. The next meeting is Wednesday January 30, 2019 at the Henry’s Restaurant in Ottawa at 6:30pm.

I would like to give a quick update on what is happening in Sight and Hearing. As many of you know, I am
trying to get a second vision screening machine. The KidSight program from LCI has expired, so we now
need to raise $10,000 to get a grant of another $10,000. We currently have a
little over $4000 collected. I am trying to combine with another district but no luck so far. We will purchase 2
machines. I will also work with the KidSight program to try and restart the KidSight
program.
Last summer the Sight and Hearing Committee met with Prevent Blindness Ohio. During the meeting I ex-
pressed my displeasure with them concerning the fact that we have not had any vision training in Northwest
Ohio in over 5 years. Many of my fellow committee members were critical of my statement and I did receive
some harsh words from the committee chair.
Lo and behold, on January 29, 2019, there will be a vision training from Prevent Blindness Ohio in Sylva-
nia. It will be at Kingston Retirement Center on King Rd. Sylvania, Ohio. Needless to say, our district needs
to have a great turnout for this training. Please go to www.wiseabouteyes.org and RSVP. This is a great train-
ing and you will learn about juvenile eye problems.

Service, Fundraising, and Social Events
Vision & Hearing Activities
PIONEER On December 6th Took 105 eyeglasses to Zones A B C meeting in Napoleon to recycle. Then on December
10th, took newer reading machine to Montpelier resident & picked up older model which was not working correctly. Al-
so, on December 27th, purchased pair of eyeglasses for Montpelier resident
BLUFFTON December 10th recycling 21 pair hearing aids to be refurbished for use. Also 310 pairs of glasses sent to
the vision sorting center to prepare for third-world missions.
NORTH BALTIMORE December 4th the North Baltimore Lions Club donated $90.00 to the Guiding eyes program.
HOLGATE December 3rd, collected 89 pair of glasses and turned in to VOSH .
Hunger Relief
MIDDLE POINT Signature Activity Caring & Sharing for Hunger Relief was December
19th. The Middle Point Lions donate food and other items to provide Christmas dinner
and meals well beyond Christmas. This year, the Middle Point Lions served five fami-
lies, and increase from our usual four families.
PORTAGE December 15th, in partnership with Christ United Methodist Church, we do-
nated Christmas Food Baskets to 6 area families. Families were located through the
Salvation Army. Each family received over 100 pounds of fresh meat, produce, dairy,
and non-perishable items. The club purchased $300 of the fresh food and the non-
perishable items were donated by the church.
WAUSEON OnDecember 13th our club prepared food for our community's weekly Community Meal. We helped pre-
pare, serve and cleanup. We served 90 people on one evening and had 12 takeout dinners served.
Environment
PIONEER On December 26th, picked up litter on CR 17 outside Kunkle.
NAPOLEON December 22, 2018 did monthly recycling.
PORTAGE Reported on December 12th they maintain a new permanent recycling center for the Wood Solid Waste Dis-
trict. Weekly, members keep the site clean and remove trash.
BLUFFTON Ink cartridges recycled December 10th 49 large ink cartridges and 210 small ink cartridges sent in for re-
cycling.
BLUFFTON On December 8th recycled 403 # of batteries received $20.15 for the sale.
FINDLAY December 3rd reported used glasses were picked up from the drop-off locations and 940 pairs were delivered
to VOSH in Pandora, OH on December 4.
Holiday
WAPAKONETA For our annual "Christmas Cheer" delivery on December 15 th our Club partners with other community
service organizations in the delivery of Food Stuffs and Christmas Gifts for needy families in our community. The sup-
ports the greater than 25 year program headed by our local Fire Departments of Wapakoneta, Buckland, and St. Johns.
BELLEFONTAINE Adopted a family to do for, for Christmas December 6 th The family is a mother and 3 little girls. We
provided presents and groceries and the club bought a ham and buns.
BELLEFONTAINE Baked cookies for our Nursing Home on December 4 th. We baked and iced enough Christmas
cookies for our local nursing home and staff.
LIMA HOST Rang Salvation Army bells December 1 st and collected money for Salvation Army.
HOLGATE December 1st reported 200 non-lions volunteer hour - church activities, putting up decorations in the town
park.

BELLEFONTAINE December 18 Our club adopted a Christmas family with 5 children. We all brought in gifts and food
and the club bought a ham and buns. Santa went with our elves to delivered many presents.
KENTON December 22nd Kenton Lions presented "Bowling with Santa" at Hillcrest Bowling Lanes from 2-4 PM. Santa
was there, and he handed out candy bags to the children. Activities at no cost to the parents and children included food,
bowling, face and cookie painting. There was a drawing for a boy’s & girls’ bicycle. Hotdogs were donated by the Ken-
ton Moose club. Pop, hotdog buns & chips were donated by the Kenton Kroger store. The boy’s bike was provided by
Superior Credit Union & the girls bike was provided by Precision Strip Inc.
WAUSEON On December 18th our club held it's annual Christmas Dinner/Potluck at our club's secretary's home for a
tasty potluck. We held our business part of the meeting then we held an ugly Christmas sweater/shirt contest with priz-
es for 1st - 3rd place. We all had fun voting for the top three winners!
NAPOLEON For a fundraising event until December 15 th we sold Christmas Trees.
BELLEFONTAINE Had a Christmas Party on December 15 th our members met at the Mt. Victory Plaza for a delicious
Christmas buffet and afterwards played Christmas bingo with lots of prizes. It was so much fun.
OTTOVILLE On December 10th Ottoville Lions Club donated $5000 towards purchase of New Christmas Lights to be
installed in the Village of Ottoville. Then on December 11 th donated $500 to the Ottoville Helping Hands Fund to go to-
wards purchasing gifts for needy children at Christmas time.
PORTAGE On December 10th judging was held for the annual Holiday Decorating contest for Portage Village. Winners
in four different categories were identified: Best Traditional Display - Drew Schmalzried and Josh Iler; Most Dynamic
Small Display - Lynn & Nancy Gillian; Best Use of Inflatables or Figures - Leanne Dunn; Best Use of Color - Gary &
Connie Deutschman. Each winner received $25.
MIDDLE POINT Santa and Mrs. Claus Visit Middle Point December 8 th The Middle Point Lions Club sponsors a visit to
town by Santa and Mrs. Claus. This is a cooperative activity with the Middle Point Fire Department. Lions members
serve as Santa and Mrs. Claus' ambassadors and provide treats to all of the kids.
GROVER HILL Gave a Helping Hand For Christmas, on December 7 th for a single mother & 3 kids, making Christmas
possible !!!!!
PIONEER On December 7th we took 270 Hot Wheels for Christmas for Kids donation.

SPENCERVILLE World Service Day December 1st Spencerville Lions Club held its World Service Day Celebration at
Roselawn Manor Nursing Home in Spencerville. Cake and ice cream were served to the residents and staff.
HOLGATE Ice Cream Day at VanCrest December 22 nd Served ice cream at VanCrest nursing home to residents and
families
OTTOVILLE Wade Wehri Benefit Childhood Cancer December 10th The Ottoville Lions Club donated $500 towards
the Wade Wehri benefit to be held on 02/03/2019. Wade was a 20 month boy who passed away on 12-01-18 from
childhood cancer. The donation is to benefit the family of Wade Wehri. Any other clubs that are willing to donate can
contact President Joe Moreno of Ottoville Lions Club.

Community
PORTAGE Publish the Village Newsletter - The Nitty Gritty December 8th The Portage Lions club now publishes the
monthly Village newsletter, the Nitty Gritty. This is a joint venture with the Village Council, Christ United Methodist
Church and the Portage Lions Club. All groups and organizations within the Village are encourage to submit articles.
The primary function of the newsletter is to keep the Village residents informed of news and events happening in the
Village.
PIONEER On December 14th, donated time sorting clothes at See And Do Thrift Shop in Montpelier.
GROVER HILL On December 7th donated $250 for Paulding Co. Fairgrounds and $250 for Senior Center Meals on
Wheels
KENTON December 5th Lions worked in the St Johns Evangelical Church Soup Kitchen between the dates of Novem-
ber 26th - November 30th. Lion Dave Sturgeon & Lion Judd Robinson; worked 5 days, Lion Daryl Flowers & Lion Bob
White; worked 4 days, Lion Brad Bailey & Lion Dave Amweg both 1 day, total of 58 hours combined. (Unknown number
of people actually known)
HOLGATE Community Sign Board December 3rd 4 signs posted for community communications
Other Activities
WAUSEON December 6th Our club had 9 members attend our District's Combined Zone Meeting. We attended and
shared to the other clubs in attendance what our club has been doing in our community since the last zone meeting.
And we learned of what the other clubs have done in their community's.
BLUFFTON December 4th $1,000 donation to LCIF Campaign 100 by Bluffton Club
NORTH BALTIMORE December 4th The North Baltimore Lions Club have sold 120 money saver coupon books, the
Hancock county edition, for 2019 as a fund raiser.
PORTAGE memorial tree December 2nd Planted a tree in Enright Park in memory of Lion Richard Gill.
KENTON December 2nd PDG Bill Keller attended the MD13 Centennial Ad-Hoc committee meeting.
FINDLAY December 15th, Treasurer Les reported that the club’s donations to the state and local agencies were made
in the amount of $550.00.
HOLGATE December 6th Zone Meeting attendance by two members
SPENCERVILLE December 11th Club meetings on 11/01/15 and 11/24/15. Club business transacted and fellowship
enjoyed by all 7 attended 1st meeting 5 the second .

Sylvania Sunrise Holiday party for the Visually Impaired —
December 12th
Sylvania Sunrise Lions hosted the Visually Impaired Holiday din-
ner for the Sight Center of Northwest OH on December 12, 2018. It
was held at Epworth United Methodist Church in Toledo OH.
This is the 86th Holiday party being hosted by the Lions for this
group. It was originally started by Toledo Host and Sylvania Sunrise
Lions assumed the
party a number of
years ago. We
couldn’t do it without
several other Lion
clubs and their Leo
clubs.
1st VDG Don
Weichart came and
participated in all the events of the night.
Swanton and Bedford MI lions’ clubs brought their Leos to help with
serving the clients and clean up. Perrysburg Lions came also to help.
We had monetary donations from Wauseon, Perrysburg, Bedford,
and Toledo Host Lions clubs. The party is a prime example of how
clubs work together to serve many. Our own club had 12 members
buying, preparing, cooking, serving, cleanup, and entertaining our cli-
ents. It was a wonderful way to start this holiday season.
Venedocia Lions Club Lights Up Three
Communities for Christmas
For the last several decades, members of the Venedocia Lions Club
have constructed,
maintained, placed,
and removed the lighted holiday decorations that adorn the village of
Venedocia each Christmas Season.
Over the years, the effort has extended to the village of Elgin and
now to the community of Landeck.
Club members have constructed lighted snowflakes, trees, angels,
candles, and wreaths that are placed on outside poles in each commu-
nity from the weekend after Thanksgiving until the first weekend into
the new year.
As components of the decorations have needed to be refurbished
and replaced, the lights have been updated to include energy efficient
LED bulbs.
The Venedocia Lions Club invites all area residents to enjoy the sights of the holiday
season while passing through the communities of Venedocia, Elgin, and Landeck.
The Christmas Decoration Committee includes those pictured: standing: Carl Ren-
ner and Bob Harter, kneeling in front: Dave Rees, seated: Boomer Bonifas, Tom Ev-
ans, and Dan Klaus. Other committee members not pictured are Paul Bockey, Doug
