Peace be with you! As we celebrate this second Sunday of Easter, the Risen Lord comes to us and greets our believing
hearts with a wish that transcends both our desires and our possibilities while filling our existence with God’s gift of
serenity and stillness. His victorious rising from the dead allows our Savior to step above earthly concerns and preoccu-
pations and provide our troubled hearts with harmony that no other source can offer us.
Second Sunday of Easter is also known as Sunday of Mercy and the Church invites believers everywhere to
contemplate the glorified image of the Risen Christ. His, once bloody, wounds are now filled with light and such a
transformation becomes a promise, a real possibility to each one of us believers in Jesus and followers of his Gospel
message. We too are all called to see our human frailty, our difficult struggles, our earthly wounds and realize that, if
endured with patience and fidelity, one day they all will be transformed in sources of light and new life. This is what
Resurrection is all about for us Christians: the promise of triumph over deadly experiences and the victory of light over
darkness.
With confidence, let us walk our Easter journey. Let us allow our hearts to be fascinated with the promise of
peace the Risen Jesus expresses to his fearful disciples in today’s Gospel. With our minds filled with joy we are called
to march towards Pentecost, for we know the gift of the Spirit promised by Jesus to his followers will fill the world with
the Grace of God. Our eyes fixed in the radiant light that comes out of the wounds of the Risen Lord, let us pause for a
moment and pray with confidence: Jesus, I Trust in You!

¡A quienes les perdonen los pecados, les quedaran perdonados! El Evangelio de este segundo Domingo de Pascua, nos
invita al abandono y la confianza. Nuestros corazones –tantas veces desfigurados por el pecado- son invitados a descan-
sar en la Misericordia del Dios que hoy nos ofrece la posibilidad del perdón por la Gracia del Espíritu Santo. Este regalo
maravilloso es el primer obsequio del Resucitado cuando al atardecer del día de la resurrección aparece a sus amigos;
su presencia no únicamente disuelve el miedo que los mantenía encerrados, sino que ahora los hace portadores del per-
dón a quienes han tenido la mala suerte de cometer errores en su vida.
Con este gesto tan generoso, Cristo el Señor nos muestra la importancia de la Resurrección en nuestra vida: al
igual que sucedió con Él cuando se levanto de la tumba nosotros también somos llamados a levantarnos de nuestras caí-
das y comenzar a disfrutar el don de la Paz que tan gentilmente nos ofrece. Su Victoria es también nuestra victoria, su
triunfo es también nuestro triunfo, ahora marchamos alegres como hijos e hijas de la Luz en un sendero de vida nueva
que nos conduce hacia la promesa del Espíritu de Verdad que descenderá sobre el mundo para bañarlo con la Gracia de
Dios.
Avancemos hacia el cumplimiento de la promesa, dejemos que la certeza de la Vida nos conduzca, y permita-
mos que la Paz que Cristo Resucitado hoy ofrece a sus amigos también se anide en nuestros corazones. Con confianza
dejemos que este Domingo de la Misericordia una plegaria simple se levante desde nuestras vidas sorprendidas: ¡Jesús,
Confío en Ti!

«Abbiamo visto il Signore!» In assenza di Tommaso, il Risorto è apparso ai discepoli, ha mostrato loro i segni della
sua passione, ha comunicato loro la pace messianica e, in una Pentecoste anticipata, lo Spirito che, attraverso le loro
mani, porterà a compimento l’opera della salvezza. Ma Tommaso, un uomo tutto d’un pezzo, che non ha paura di
non essere edificante, si impenna: «Se non vedo, non crederò!»
L’apostolo Tommaso è un tipo onesto e franco. Dal Vangelo traspare, a tratti, il suo carattere: non sarà facile portarlo
ad accettare il rischio della fede. Lo sentiamo molto vicino a noi, col suo bisogno di cose reali e tangibili, con la sua
diffidenza per l’ideologia staccata dal quotidiano. Perché «ciò che è sorprendente nella fede, è che si possa crede-
re» (Crespy). Il Signore capisce tutto questo, al punto che otto giorni dopo prende in parola Tommaso e va incontro
alle sue esigenze: «Metti la mano nel mio costato, e credi…»
Quanto a noi, credenti del ventesimo secolo rimarremmo tranquillamente nell’orbita liturgica della pasqua, acconten-
tandoci a ripetere: «Beati quelli che pur non avendo visto crederanno»?L’esperienza di Tommaso deve diventare la
nostra: dobbiamo aspirare a vedere la potenza della Risurrezione, manifestarsi nella nostra vita personale e collettiva;
dobbiamo volere che la forza del Signore guarisca le ferite dei nostri fratelli, risvegli gli oppressi, strappi alla morte
uomini e donne ancora sprofondate nel peccato.
Dobbiamo dare il nostro contributo. Perché ciò che è sorprendente nella fede, è che si possa credere nell’impossibile,
e fare di tutto perché si realizzi. Allora, ma allora soltanto, Gesù può diventare per ciascuno di noi «mio Signore e
mio Dio».

In the Catholic Church, the Council of Trent took the ques-
tion up in 1563, and decided to shore up its teaching on the
sacramentality of marriage. They identified many threats to
this, including secret marriages and easy divorce. So they
enacted laws that still govern our practice today: to be val-
id, marriage consent must be exchanged in the presence of
a priest and two witnesses. Ever since Trent, marriages
must also be announced three weeks in advance to the
community, and recorded in a register. In some places in
the world, the “banns” are still posted in the public square.
In the United States, parishes sometimes publish the
“banns” in the bulletin.
Anyone who has ever watched a soap opera has seen
the standard scene of a minister announcing gravely, “If
there is anyone here present who sees any reason why
these two should not be married . . .” This bit of drama
has no place in the Catholic liturgy, but survives among
Protestants who broke with us before Trent edited this

Mio Signore e mio Dio!
L'evangelista Giovanni, con rara efficacia, riesce a mostrarci, ricorrendo alla descrizione degli elementi esteri-
ori, le situazioni interiori delle persone: nella pericope odierna prevalgono inizialmente le tenebre, il buio della
notte, le porte chiuse, il timore dei giudei. Noi leggiamo il tutto anche in senso traslato e spirituale. Scopriamo
il buio dei cuori, le chiusure degli animi e il persistere della paura. Sono questi sentimenti che ci accomunano
agli apostoli e coincidono quasi sempre con l'assenza di Cristo o preludono ad un suo consolante intervento.
Quante volte costatiamo che egli si inserisce dentro le nostre storie, dentro il nostro buio per diventare la nos-
tra luce, per darci il suo conforto. Mostra le sua mani trapassate dai chiodi, il suo costato squarciato dalla lan-
cia per sollecitarci a comprendere il recondito valore che egli ha voluto dare alla sofferenza in tutte le sue man-
ifestazioni e come anche le nostre, se unite alle sue, diventano motivo di redenzione e di salvezza. Egli l'ha
sperimentato sulla sua carne, ha sperimentato anche il buio del sepolcro, ma proprio per quei patimenti ora può
dire con efficacia: «Pace a voi!» e infondere coraggio ai suoi che sono al buio e spauriti. Per il sacrificio offer-
to al Padre, ora può alitare amore sugli Apostoli e dare loro il mandato di assolvere e perdonare, un amore da

credere non con la visione della carne, ma solo con lo sguardo della fede.

UNIRSE A LA COMUNIDAD DE CREYENTES
¿Qué te ayudará a tener fe? Las lecturas bíblicas de
hoy hablan de la fe y de la duda. Se “escribieron… para
que ustedes crean”, como nos dice hoy el pasaje del
Evangelio de san Juan (20:31). Tiene esto una cierta ur-
gencia. En este Segundo Domingo de Pascua se nos lanza
un desafío a unirnos a la comunidad de creyentes –un
sinnúmero de hombres y mujeres que dan testimonio del
poder de la fe de los Apóstoles.
No hay duda que este poder viene de Jesucristo. La
segunda lectura, del libro del Apocalipsis, relata la visión
mística de Juan sobre el Hijo del Hombre, el cual procla-
ma: “Estuve muerto y de nuevo soy el que vi-
ve” (Apocalipsis 1:18). El Evangelio reúne a todos ex-
cepto a Tomás para ver a Jesús resucitado y recibir de él
el Espíritu Santo. Al igual que Tomás, los que hemos lle-
gado más tarde debemos tener fe para poder tener vida.
TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
La Iglesia católica es universal, extendida en di-
versas naciones y culturas. A través de los siglos
estas culturas han enriquecido la Tradición de la
Iglesia con muchas tradiciones y devociones que
van más allá de su cultura de origen. La fiesta de la
Divina Misericordia es un buen ejemplo. Viene de
una devoción que nació en Polonia con la Herma-
na Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) canonizada en
el 2000.
La devoción a la Divina Misericordia se celebra
el Segundo Domingo de Pascua y durante todo el
año orando la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia.
En latinoamérica se ha ido extendiendo esta devo-
ción desde 1978 cuando fue aprobada por el Papa
Paulo VI. En todas partes se puede encontrar la
imagen de la Divina Misericordia, Jesús de pie con
rayos rojos y blanco-azules que brillan desde su
corazón hacia el mundo. Lleva el lema: Jesús, con-
fío en ti.
La finalidad de esta devoción es recordar al pe-
cador que la misericordia de Dios es infinita e
inagotable. Es una misericordia que debemos imi-
tar para que la paz pueda reinar en nuestros cora-

Second Sunday of Easter
SIGNS AND WONDERS
People long for “a sure thing,” concrete proof that they can see and touch. The healing of the sick, as in today’s reading
from Acts, is surely concrete proof of divine action. But just as Jesus, when he healed the sick, wanted people to see more than the
immediate healing of ailments, so, too, Peter and the apostles are given the gift of healing the sick to lead the people to God. There is
more to illness than the body; Peter and the apostles, and indeed all in ministry today, are charged with the healing of souls. That’s
where we must make a leap of faith, because we can’t see or touch the healing of souls, but we must know it in our hearts. We do not
see, yet we must believe.
The second reading, from Revelation, draws on many images that resonate with those familiar with the Hebrew scriptures.
The author has a vision of heaven, a vision given only to him, and he is commanded to testify to Jesus Christ, the risen Lord who
now dwells in heaven, who has conquered death and sin for all time. We are called in faith to believe his testimony. We do not see,
yet we must believe.
BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SEEN AND HAVE BELIEVED
John’s Gospel today places us with the disciples, behind a locked door, hiding, whimpering, fearful. Yet Jesus Christ comes
to us, because Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows that we have the ability to spread the word of salvation, to
be the church of Christ on earth. So he comes and bestows on us the great power of the Holy Spirit, the power that will build the
church, the power that will spread the word. But not everyone was there, not everyone believes. Thomas needs more; he needs con-
crete proof. So Jesus comes back, because Thomas needs to see him. Jesus loves Thomas, and invites him to deepen his faith. So,
too, Jesus Christ invites all of us to a deeper faith. Some of us may need miracles or signs and wonders to believe. But many of us
have been given the gift of faith without the need to see for ourselves. Let us help each other come to deeper faith in the resurrected
Lord.
