Thank you for your partnership in your child’s education at Park School Campus. Have a
safe and relaxing winter break. We look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Student Arrival:
As the weather has turned cooler, we want to remind students and parents that we open our
school doors at 8:30am. We will be encouraging all students to come to school after 8:30am as
we do not have supervision before school. At 8:35, the doors to the academic wing are opened
and students are permitted to head to class. Thank you for your assistance.

Yearbooks:
Online Yearbook ordering information is now on our school website. We are encouraging as
many parents as possible to use the on-line ordering feature as it will allow us to better track
student orders. The cost of the yearbook will increase to $20 per copy after Winter Break.
Please order by clicking on the following link: http://jostensyearbooks.com?REF=A01102972

5Essentials Survey for Parents:
Parents, teachers and selected students in Community Consolidated School District 46 will have
an opportunity to participate in the fifth annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey,
available in English or Spanish, is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings
of your child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the
important elements of school effectiveness. For parents, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be
available through January 18, 2018. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-
essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.

K-4th Grade Recess Reminder:
As the weather gets colder, please make sure your children have: hats, gloves, snow pants,
boots, and winter coats. As weather permits, we will have outdoor recess. The blacktop
provides an area for students to play that are not dressed for the snow. We will be outside for
recess unless the wind chill drops below zero degrees.

Mitten Tree:
Thank you for all your generosity in donating to families in need this year. Have a wonderful
holiday season!

GCHS Class of 2022 Orientation & Registration Info:
Freshman orientation night will be Tuesday, January 9 at GCHS (6:30pm). Visit the GCHS
website for more info. At that time, students will receive their class selection sheet and all
necessary registration paperwork. The GCHS Guidance Counselors will visit Park Campus on
Thursday, January 18th to help students register for their Freshman year classes. Families will
be issued a meeting time during Orientation and parents are encouraged to join their child at
Park Campus on January 18th to select classes.

D46 STUDENTS ARE EXPLORING COMPUTER SCIENCE!
Dear Families,
In computer lab, we are participating in the Hour of Code. We are using a
variety of sources to introduce our students to computer science. Learning to
code can be fun, collaborative, and creative!
Students learn:
    • basic mouse skills
    • basic blockly computer programming
    • higher-order thinking, logic and multi-step problem solving
    • creativity and perseverance
Our resources allow our kindergarten through fourth grade students to explore
the world of coding. The lessons can take the form of self-guided and self-
paced tutorials, “unplugged “activities that require no computer at all or
robotics

Some of the vocabulary you may start hearing your students use:
    • Algorithm – a set of ordered directions for a computer to follow
    • Bug - a problem/mistake in the algorithm (code/directions)
    • Debug – fix a problem in the algorithm (code/directions)
Did you know that according to Code.org 71% of all new jobs in STEM are in
computing or that only 8% of STEM graduates major in computer science? The
technology and problem solving skills your children are using can be built upon
for future learning and jobs that haven’t even been created yet. We encourage
you to talk with your student about what they are learning and spend some time
coding together.

Here are some free resources to explore:

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Parents, teachers and selected students in Community Consolidated School District 46 will have an opportunity to participate in
the sixth annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey, available in English or Spanish, is designed to generate a
detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts
on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school. On behalf of the Illinois State Board of
Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The
survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and
larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:

      ● Effective Leaders
      ● Collaborative Teachers
      ● Involved Families
      ● Supportive Environments
      ● Ambitious Instruction

Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators
were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more
Essentials.

If at least 20 percent of parents complete this survey for a school, a parent supplement will be generated. The parent data will be
used by the district as a measure of continuous improvement. Teachers across the district and students in grades 6-8 will be
responding to this survey. The information from these surveys will be included in the State School Report Card. Fourth and fifth
grades students will participate in a pilot administration of this survey. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey
will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be
kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. For parents, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will
be available between December 5, 2017, through January 18, 2018. To take the survey please visit
https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.

For students in Grades 4-8, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered during school. This survey should take
approximately 25 minutes to complete. Please see the additional information regarding the Student Survey for more details.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Community Consolidated School District 46’s Curriculum must include Erin’s Law, an annual state mandated,
age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention program for students Pre-K through 12th
grade. Governor Pat Quinn signed Erin’s Law in January 2013.

It is estimated that one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused by the time they are eighteen. It is
also estimated that about 90 percent of the abusers are known to the child and include relatives, neighbors,
babysitters, and family acquaintances.

Erin’s Law requires our schools to educate students on safe touches and unsafe touches; safe secrets and
unsafe secrets; and how to “get away and tell today.” Children will also learn how to recognize child sexual
abuse, and reduce their vulnerability and encourage them to report abuse.

The curriculum will vary from grade to grade, however it will be developmentally appropriate per grade level. In
Pre-School, students receive developmentally appropriate lessons presented by the Zacharias Center. In
grades K-4, students will watch a pre-approved video, titled, “It’s Your Body: You’re In Charge,” that meets the
requirements of Erin’s Law. If you would like to preview this video, please contact your building administrator.

For grades K-4, videos will be shown to students between January 8, 2018 and January 31, 2018. In 5th - 8th
Grade, age developmentally appropriate instruction will occur during students’ health class.

For more information regarding Erin’s Law please visit:
http://www.isbe.state.il.us/reports/erins-law-final0512.pdf

Please contact your school administration if you have any questions or concerns about Erin’s Law.

Sincerely,

Amanda Woodruff
Teaching, Learning & Assessment Coordinator

Community Consolidated School District 46 will provide an educational environment that maximizes the potential of ALL students to
be prepared for life’s opportunities while developing a lasting appreciation for learning.

cancel school made?
Superintendents from area districts start communicating
with each other as soon as the weather reports start to
look threatening. The superintendents generally try to
reach a consensus on school closures. Several districts
share bus services or house students from communities
across the county. Discussing the decision to close schools
with each other is also helpful in considering all of the
scenarios and possible outcomes.
