                                             英培安:自省与自觉
                      Exhibition | 2 Nov–31 Dec | 10am–10pm | Print & Film Gallery | Free

Journey through fictional terrains constructed by Yeng in this exhibition.
Indefatigable in his pursuit of dissecting the human condition, he
has developed a distinct literary style of wry, absurdist humour and
a dualistic perspective that interweaves the personal with the social.
Encompassing notions of contradiction, hope, regret, and desire, Yeng's
timeless stories and characters hold up a candid mirror to society,
revealing the beauty and flaws of our existence.

Pioneer’s unique voice and take you on a journey through his literary
oeuvre. Set against a backdrop of the rapidly changing social landscapes
of 1960s–1980s Singapore, his novels explore themes of identity, love,
loss, longing, and gender roles through the shifting perspectives of vastly
                     different characters.

Writer's Spotlight
          Cheong Suk-Wai

The Worst of Times
I am on my knees, in church.
I have been like this, for two hours straight, on the hottest afternoon of the year
I am trying to pray, but a single conversation is crowding out all thought.
“Can it wait two months?” I had asked my doctor five days before, when she told me I had to
go under the knife immediately. “There is still a lot I need to do.”
“You cannot wait two weeks,” she said, pushing a box of Kleenex towards me.
These past five days, I have polished every surface in my flat. Washed the curtains at 3am,
hung them up at 4am and took them down again at 5am. I rearranged the furniture in my
living room three times. I threw away every book I had. I am dying, and all I can think about
is what my friends will make of my bloodstained floor and frayed IKEA curtains.
The illness eating away at me has devoured both sets of my grandparents, several uncles and
aunts – and my father. But they were old, and I am young.
Suddenly, still on my knees, a wisp of wind tickles my ear, then caresses my hanging head. It
is the breeze from my childhood, and in my mind, I see again the smilies and sighs of days
gone by. This breeze, the gentle breath of God, is telling me: “All will be well. You will be well.”
Well.
The Worst of Times. Unpublished manuscript
