This joint programme forms part of the ISS research group on Governance,
  Globalisation and Social Justice (GGSJ). Research performed by members
  of the group explores how and to what extent particular governance
  arrangements help or hinder the achievement of goals of social justice.
  The programme will run during the inception period for four years
  (January 2015 - January 2019), with possible extension depending on the
  outcome of an evaluation.

                                                                                diversity in students and teachers. ISS is

                                                                                in 1952 by Dutch universities and the
                                                                                Netherlands Ministry of Education, in 2010
                                                                                ISS became part of Erasmus University
                                                                                Rotterdam (EUR). In 2013, EUR celebrated its
                                                                                100-year anniversary. The PhD programme
                                                                                at ISS is a four-year doctoral programme.
                                                                                More than 100 students are currently enrolled,
                                                                                supervised by a multidisciplinary faculty.

                                                                                                      internationally

                                                                                institution of excellence. The University’s
                                                                                policy of non-discrimination, on racial or
                                                                                any other grounds was severely tested when
                                                                                the apartheid-government forbid the
                                                                                enrolment of non-white students in 1959.
                                                                                The Wits academic and student community
                                                                                protested strongly and continued to maintain
                                                                                a consistent and vigorous stand against
                                                                                apartheid, in education, and in all its
                                                                                manifestations. With the dismantling of
                                                                                apartheid and the election of a democratic
                                                                                government, the role of Wits as a resource
                                                                                has become increasingly important: staff
                                                                                members and researchers are approached
                                                                                on a daily basis by the media, commerce and
                                                                                industry to give their expert knowledge and
                                                                                opinion on a wide variety of topics.
