                                         Research Summary

Within the framework of the CBMSO Scientific Culture Program, The Department of Scientific Culture of the
CBMSO (DCC-CBMSO) has collaborated in the following activities (2013-14): 1) XIII (2013) and XIV (2014)
Scientific Weeks in Madrid. In this regard, several projects were carried out in the CBMSO –some of them fi-
nancially supported by FECYT (Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology)-, complementing the annual
program of guided visits of Secondary School students to our Research Centre. The CBMSO is one of the
most active Centres of the CSIC and UAM (Spanish Board of Scientific Research) in such tasks. 2) Collabora-

for the scientific e-diary “Notiweb” (http://www.madrimasd.org/cienciaysociedad). 3) Developing of an Insti-

                                    Programme “3x3 TV news” (http://www.madrimasd.org/informacionidi/madrimasd-tv/default.asp).
Research Summary 5) Participation in several seminars in High Schools and Secondary School Centers. 6) Participation in the
Madrid Science Fair “Alcobendas Weekend Science Fair 2014”. 7) Organization (2013-2014) and coordina-
tion of the “Biotechnology Explorer” course for secondary school teachers. 8) Finally, as a CBMSO member,
Staff the DCC Director periodically colaborates with the magazine “El Cultural”, The Journal of Feelsynapsis and
Principia –aimed to items of scientific culture -, the Spanish National TV (TVE; La 2), the Spanish National
Radio (Radio 5 –“Entre Probetas” and “El Laboratorio de JAL”-, Radio 1 –“A Hombros de Gigantes- and Radio

Moreover, the research group of NeuroVirology aims at the study of the effect of HSV-1 on neurodegeneration,
demyelinating disease and transcytosis in both immature and differentiated myelin-producing oligodendrocytic
cells. In addition to cell susceptibility the role of the major cell receptors for viral entry was assessed. In gene-
ral, the results revealed that OPC (oligodendrocyte precursor cells) and HOG cells cultured under differentia-

                                                                                                                                                            CBMSO 2013-2014
tion conditions became more susceptible to HSV-1. On the other hand, viral infection induced morphological
changes corresponding to differentiated cells, suggesting that HSV-1 might be inducing cell differentiation.
Colocalization of HVEM and nectin-1 with viral particles were also observed, suggesting that these two major
HSV-1 receptors are functional in HOG cells. Finally, electron microscopy assays indicated that HSV-1 may be
also entering OLs by macropinocytosis depending on their differentiation stage.
