CULTURAL AN UNMISSABLE VISIT TO THE
OLD TOWN (VIEILLE VILLE)
DESTINATIONS The Old Town is the historic centre of Annecy, with its
pedestrianised streets and canals.Those who love old buildings and
are passionate about history will love the historic centre of Annecy,
with the streets of Old Annecy satisfying a desire for authenticity.
Dominated by the castle and the basilica, this labyrinth of cobbled
streets houses the Palais de l’Ile. A monument symbolic of Annecy,
this little island in the middle of the Canal du Thiou has been
photographed countless times by those attempting to capture its
unusual charm. The canals gently weave through this fortified city
that was built in the 11th century.
Palais de l’ile : Listed as a historic monument in 1900, Palais de
l’Ile was built on a naturally rocky island and has served as a prison,
a courthouse, and an administrative centre. It still has its original
structure, the oldest parts of which date from the 12th century.
Originally a simple four-sided building, considered only a fortified
house, occasionally housing the prison and the mint of the Counts
of Geneva, the building known today as Palais de l’Ile is an original
monument from the Middle Ages.
