Prevention of electrostatic charges as an ignition source
In many cases, electrostatic charges are directly linked to industrial pro-
cesses such as transferring, emptying or filling. They can cause break-
downs and damage and may result in fires and explosions. The decisive
factor when assessing the hazards due to electrostatic charge is the
probability of the local and temporal concurrence of an explosive atmos-
phere and a dangerously high charge. This type of concurrence is most
likely where handling a product both leads to dangerously high charge
and to the formation of an explosive atmosphere.
This applies, in particular to handling flammable fluids such as, for
example, hydrocarbons or other non-polar solventsor non-conductive,
combustible bulk materials.
However, conductive materials can also be charged to dangerous levels,
if they are processed in non-conductive installations or if, during operati-
on, a separation of charges occurs.
Non-conductive installations themselves or conductive installations that
are not earthed can also be charged to dangerous levels.
Examples of fires and explosions caused by static electricity as the
ignition source range from filling a plastic canister with toluene to the
pneumatic filling of a large silo with combustible bulk material. Other ty-
pical
examples of accidents include filling driers with a product that is damp
due to solvents, emptying centrifuges and emptying combustible bulk
material from flexible bulk material containers. In order to exclude electro-
static charges as the source of ignition as far as possible, a two-channel
earth monitoring unit is used.
This both reliably monitors the resistance between the earth conductor
and potential equaliser and also monitors the correct connection of the
earthing device.
Temporary equaliser connections for mobile devices, containers and
vehicles
A resistance of 106 ohms between the installation’s mobile equipment,
holding tanks and vehicles is sufficient in order to avoid dangerously high
charge.
Before every action, for example opening tanks, connecting pipes or
hoses for filling or emptying, mobile equipment, tanks and vehicles shall
be earthed by means of a potential equalisation conductor so that the
resistance between the equipment to be earthed and the potential equa-
lisation conductor or, where necessary, a charge bridge is reliably below
106 ohms and, in practice, is reduced to low single-digit values. The tem-
porary equaliser connection must not be removed before activities have
been completed. The use of a monitoring system with an lock is recom-
mended to prevent loading or unloading liquids or bulk materials if there
is no equaliser connection or if it is not effective.
The earth monitoring system has additional advantages if coatings or
coats of paint on the equipment, barrels or tanks being earthed give no
reason to doubt the effectiveness of the equaliser connections.
