1200-1300 All that sniffles and itches: An update on the management of rhinitis and urticaria
Many children are suffering from allergy-related symptoms such as allergic rhinitis and urticaria, and
the prevalence is increasing. Some therapeutic options are available over the counter, and others
through prescriptions, although misconceptions impair the optimal management of these diseases.
This evidence-based session will discuss the prevalence and diagnosis of allergic diseases in Canada,
the guidelines for management of children, and discuss new treatment options available in Canada.

1200-1300 Identifying malnutrition in children
Using illustrative cases, this session will focus on clinical aspects of paediatric patients at risk of
malnutrition cared for by the community paediatrician. The definition of malnutrition and importance
of recognizing poor nutritional status will be explored. The recently proposed conceptual framework
of a Pediatric Feeding Disorder will be introduced to help guide the appropriate care of patients and
             communication among health care professionals.

1500-1600 Atopic innovations and ethnic diversity
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects diverse ethnic groups
with varying prevalence. According to a Canadian census, more than 7.5 million people belong to a
visible minority such as South Asian, Chinese or black, and the number is steadily growing. Yet many
doctors appear unaware that visible minorities are at much higher risk than Caucasians of some skin
conditions, ranging from relatively harmless dark spots to more serious problems, like late-stage
melanoma. This session will focus on the unique clinical features of AD in diverse ethnic groups,
targeted treatments and responses to current therapies, specific considerations when moisture
barriers is compromised, as well as prevention strategies. A thorough understanding of atopic
dermatitis across a broad range of racial and ethnic groups is critical as we care for an increasingly
            multinational patient population.

1200-1300 A practical, office-based approach to paediatric neuromuscular disease
This session will present key clinical features of neuromuscular conditions in children, including
symptoms that can identify potential worsening bulbar and respiratory function. Emerging
approved gene modifying and gene replacing treatments will also be discussed. Lastly, office-
based management and ‘next steps’ for home accessibility assessment, swallowing and respiratory
            function will be summarized.

1500-1600 Advances in atopic dermatitis: Type 2 inflammation and treatment options
Patients with type 2 inflammatory disease, such as atopic dermatitis (AD), have an increased
prevalence of other atopic comorbidities. Current management of moderate-to-severe AD in
children is challenging, as effective systemic therapies with a favourable safety profile for long-term
use are not available. This session will focus on the underlying inflammation of AD and practical
approaches in clinical management of this chronic disease in children.

1100-1200 Early nutrition and immunity: Progress and practice
This session will provide an overview of the impact that nutrition can have on the development
of the infant immune system. The session will emphasize the importance of breast milk from an
immunity perspective, including development of the neonatal gut microbiome and its impact on
atopy, and current recommendations on the identification of high risk infants, early supplemental
food introduction and introduction and potential limitations in this practice. Discussion of various
presentations of adverse food reactions will be touched on, including both lgE medicated and non-
lgE mediated. The session will also address what current evidence has to say on new ingredients in
infant formula, such as synthetic human milk oligosaccharides, that are being considered for their
immune benefits in babies who are not exclusively breastfed.

1230-1330 Child and adolescent lipid screening and management
Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death. Primary prevention is developed in adulthood
and rapidly evolving in paediatrics. Evidence suggests that atherosclerosis begins in childhood
and is associated with modifiable risk factors, such as obesity. Moreover, inherited disorders of lipid
metabolism (familial hypercholesterolemia) are common (1:250) and often undiagnosed until a
catastrophic event occurs in young adulthood. Therefore, primary prevention of CVD must start
             from childhood.

1230-1330 Children’s health after climate-related disasters: Implications for Canadian
          paediatricians
This session will provide an overview of recent climate-related disasters in Canada and the
immediate, moderate and long-term health impacts on children, including existing strategies to deal
             with the problem.

          chronic conditions
An essential aspect of care for children with all types of chronic conditions is the ability to explore
a family’s values, priorities and goals of care, and incorporate these into treatment plans and
recommendations. This session will present a systematic approach to conversations in the setting of
serious illness or complex health conditions. There will be a focus on practical tools, approaches and
principles that can be integrated into routine paediatric practice.

Transforming health systems for Indigenous children and youth
It is well understood that the conditions in which children are born, grow, live and play—the
social determinants—help shape their health outcomes. Indigenous children are also affected by
determinants such as cultural continuity, health care systems, colonialism, and social exclusion.
Transforming these systems- and societal-level determinants offers the potential for lasting
improvements to persistent health inequities. The speaker will explore the conditions required to
bring about such changes, and offer examples of where transformation is under way.

1600-1700 From streets to systems: Unpacking violence and its effects on children and youth
             in Canada
The UN Convention on the Rights of a Child declare that our children have the right to freedom from
all forms of violence. From mass shootings to hate speech and rhetoric, children and youth today
are at great risk of being exposed to and impacted by direct violence. Yet, in unpacking the roots of
violence, we must understand how structural, historic and systemic discrimination, in particular racist
and xenophobic discrimination, perpetuates these atrocities.

1600-1700 Urology for paediatricians: Diagnosis and management of common urological
            conditions in the office
Paediatricians are often the first health care providers to identify common urological conditions such
as undescended testicles, hypospadias, phimosis and bladder and bowel dysfunction. Currently,
there are challenges in determining which cases are appropriate for paediatrician management
and which require referral to a urologist. The focus of this session is to provide practical tips for early
diagnosis and management of the most common urological conditions seen in general paediatric
            practice.

1600-1700 What is new and controversial in paediatric infectious diseases in 2021?
Speakers will present on topics in paediatric infectious diseases that are relevant to general
paediatricians as there is new knowledge or management remains controversial. The content and
quality of available evidence will be presented. Topics will be derived closer to the date depending

Anti-racism and the pathway to change: From systemic to individual
A significant shift in the health care system’s policies, practices, and procedures is required to
address institutional racism and create organizational and institutional change. This session will
discuss the need for more racially just and equitable institutions of medicine. If institutional anti-
racism is truly the goal, we must ask ourselves how health professionals should be trained, how
institutions are to be run, and how patient care is to be delivered.

1230-1330 A real poop show! The diagnosis and management of C. difficile in children
               C. difficile is frequently detected in paediatric stool samples but the interpretation of this finding can
be challenging. Newer laboratory testing practices may be leading the over diagnosis and treatment
of C. difficile in children. Recent epidemiological studies using molecular techniques and case
control design have revealed the frequency of colonization with “toxigenic” strains, particularly in
pre-school aged children. This session will review our updated understanding of the epidemiology
of C. difficile in children, including low and high-risk populations for development of disease.
Attendees will also learn of recent changes in the recommendations for testing and management of
               C. difficile in children, including a discussion of the limitations of various approaches.

1600-1700 Moving towards anti-racism practice in medicine
Doctors take an oath to treat all patients equally, and yet not all patients are treated equally well.
The answer to why is complicated. We now recognize that racism and discrimination are deeply
ingrained in the social, political, and economic structures of our society. For Black, Indigenous and
other people of colour (BIPOC individuals), these differences result in unequal access to quality
education, healthy food, livable wages, and affordable housing. Practical steps to incorporate an
anti-racism lens in medicine, and in the provision of patient care will be discussed.

   gender affirming care.

3. Whole exome sequencing and whole genome sequencing: What every frontline clinician
   should know in 2021

Genome-wide sequencing tests, including whole exome sequencing and genome sequencing,
are increasingly used in paediatrics to diagnose genetic conditions. Indications for testing,
availability, and access are issues germane to frontline clinicians across Canada. This presentation
will outline major advantages, limitations, and result types associated with this genetic testing
   strategy.
