UQ RACING Formula SAE Team
Who is
UQ Racing?
UQ Racing is a team of dedicated
undergraduate students from the University
of Queensland. They come from a variety of
backgrounds with the goal of designing and
building a race car to compete against other
universities from all around the world.
Each year their achievements are showcased
at various Formula SAE competitions around
the world, where they compete against like-
minded teams from other universities and
technical colleges in design, business, and on-
track events.
The students gain practical engineering design
and manufacturing experience, while also
practicing project management, teamwork,
networking and financial and resource
management. The team is backed by a
skillfully diverse mix of students with degrees
varying from engineering and IT, to business
and marketing.
The team is managed and operated solely by
the students, however, they are fully supported
by The University of Queensland. This allows
our students to learn and work together
on exciting projects in a safe and regulated
environment.

DESIGN.
Every year, our team members from various
backgrounds at the university take on the
challenge of designing a functional car,
while adhering to the competition’s rules.
Points are awarded not only for designing
a fast and agile car, but also one that is
innovative, cost effective and well presented.
BUILD.
UQR provides an excellent hands-on learning
experience for students. The cars are built
in-house at our dedicated workshop.
Assisted by our many sponsors we can
learn practical skills and pass these on to
the new members of the team every year.
COMPETE.
The year of hard work culminates in
Victoria where teams from around the
world compete in FSAE Australasia.
Teams are required to compete in both
static and dynamic events spanning key
areas such as design, presentation, cost,
acceleration, endurance and autocross.

2021 Driverless
In 2020 UQ Racing began development of a
new driverless vehicle based upon a previous
year’s electric vehicle. Expected to drive on
its own in 2021, much development is yet to
be done. A large amount of both software
and hardware development is taking place,
especially in the areas of computer vision,
LIDAR perception, Simultaneous Localisation
and Mapping (SLAM), Path Planning and
Actuation.
This represents a significant technological
advancement for a student-lead design
competition in Queensland as it is set to be
Queensland’s first driverless formula student
vehicle. On top of this, it provides invaluable
experience, knowledge and skill sets to the
members currently working on the driverless
project.
The team is repurposing our EV19 Chicken and
retrofitting all driverless sensors to the existing
chassis. This provides an amazing platform for
the team to work off and will help to speed up
the development.
We have begun development of various
software items including simultaneous
localisation and mapping, path planning,
computer vision and lidar perception and are
set to drive in 2021.

What do we need?
Consumable resources
As we manufacture over 80% of our vehicles
in house, resources such as aluminium, metals,
carbon fibre, balsa wood, composite materials
and resins are highly valuable to our team
Manufacturing resources
In order to manufacture our vehicles to the highest
quality possible we recquire access to tools such as
CNC mill, waterjet cutting, 3D printing, composite
layup, manufacturing and
aluminium welding
Educational resources
As a student-based university team the learn-
ing and transferring of knowledge is imperitive
to our success. Time with industry profession-
als, technical support for tools and equipment,
and assistance with software packages, coding
applications, CAD design , welding and proj-
ect management help us improve and perform
better every year.
Monetary Assistance
While in-kind donations are welcomed, cash dona-
tions allow our team to explore high-level concepts
that we otherwise would not be able to afford in a
typical year’s ‘design and manufacture’
cycle.

What can we do for you?
As a sponsor, you have access to our 2021 Launch and Networking eve-
nings, as well as many events throughout the year to meet our team;
some of the highest achieving and technically capable engineering stu-
dents at UQ. We can also welcome you to attend a test session with the
team.
