The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is a charitable 501c3 organization caring for nearly 4.500 animals each year to help them find second chances in a new home, or to help reunite them with their grateful owners. For more than 65 years, we’ve worked tirelessly to care for the sick, treat the injured, comfort the unwanted and protect the abused. Whether helping people in need keep their pets through surrender prevention programs, offering low-cost veterinary services and clinics, as well as outreach and education events throughout the county, our work goes far beyond the walls of the shelter. In 2021, as our community starts to emerge from the economic difficulties sustained during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re embarking upon a new era of outreach to help people as much as we help pets. The ASPCA estimates that more than 4.2 million pets are expected to enter poverty as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic--nearly a 21% increase over pre- COVID figures, creating a potential crisis as pet owners across the country are forced into impossible situations where they can no longer care for their beloved pets as federal stimuluses end, unemployment benefits exhaust and eviction moratoriums expire. Your support today means we can continue our lifesaving work to help abused, injured, abandoned and unwanted animals throughout Berks County just as we have for nearly 70 years. But your support can also breathe life into these new initiatives to help pets stay with their people, keeping them out of the shelter system until their owners get back on their feet.

PET PORTRAIT
CALENDAR
What happens when an animal lover and an artist get randomly matched up? Well, we
weren’t quite sure either, but it turned out to be a FUNraiser like no other! Last spring,
we recruited a group of guest artists and a group of animal lovers willing to commission
them (without knowing if they had any artistic ability at all) to create a portrait of
their pet. And the results unexpectedly knocked our paws off! After so many fantastic
masterpieces came in, and seeing the enthusiastic response (and so many tears of joy!)
from our pet owners, we were encouraged to keep the FUNraising going by having the
public vote on their favorites, which are then compiled into our Pet Portrait calendar.
This year, with your support, we plan to fill 2022’s calendar with coupons to pet-friendly
establishments to make it a new Berks County tradition for art and pet lovers alike!
