City Montessori School (CMS) is the world’s largest
city-school, with 18 campuses in the city of Lucknow.
CMS has been ranked among India’s Top 3 Most
Respected Education Brands and been ranked the top
school of Uttar Pradesh (Education World magazine).
The school that began with 5 children in 1959 on a
borrowed capital of 300 rupees today has over 57,000
students from pre-primary to Class XII.
Our founders, Dr Jagdish Gandhi and Dr Bharti Gandhi,
were inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and
Sant Vinoba Bhave. They started CMS with the vision of
inspiring generations of children to become socially
conscious world citizens, committed to the service of
humanity.
Their motto Jai Jagat has been the school's greeting
from the beginning. CMS students are taught the value
of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam, or ‘the Earth is but One
Country and Mankind its Citizens'.

Guardian Home Visit.’ Once a year, teachers visit their
students’ home to meet with parents. Parents are
encouraged to provide open feedback to teachers as
well as seek advice to ensure that their children
achieve their full potential. Home Visits foster a strong
bond between the school and home, as well as
between teachers and their students.

My journey with CMS Cambridge
started in 2017, in Class 5. I am now Art work by Vatsala Sinha, student of 'A' Level Art
finishing 8th. In this 3-4 year time
period, I have noticed a lot of
changes in my academic skills, all for
good. I have learned to analyse
things closely and find meaning out
of them. The subjects that seemed
so difficult in previous schools, have now become
super interesting.
The Cambridge curriculum is a spiral one which
builds on our skills every year and the teaching is
practical based.

11Joyful
Pre-Primary Years
GOALS
3Es
• Encouragement
• Environment
• Example of adults
With our fun school activities for pre-primary
children, learning becomes interesting and
enjoyable, and goes beyond textbooks and
whiteboards. Carefully tailored school activities
lead to the all-round development of children and
help them achieve their maximum potential.
Pre-primary years in CMS involve playful activities,
integration of music, use of appropriate ed-tech,
and practices that nurture spontaneity, self-
expression, creativity and confidence.
The watchword for the teachers is using the
language of encouragement.
1213
Personalized Learning CMS places great emphasis on personalized learning for each child. This determines the pace of learning for every child and helps teachers to optimize the instructional approach for the needs of each learner. Learning activities are made available that are meaningful and relevant to learners. 14
Stimulating Environment
Children perform better in an inspiring environment.
We create a climate of encouragement to facilitate the
all-round development of every child and provide a
joyful and peaceful environment.
1516
A Broad Curriculum
CMS focuses on six aspects of learning that provide a
comprehensive framework for a child's development at
the pre-primary level:
Ÿ Personal, social and emotional development
Ÿ Communication, language and literacy
Ÿ Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
Ÿ Physical development
Ÿ Creative development
Ÿ Knowledge and understanding of the world
17Learning with Fun
About 15% of the CMS student body is below the age of 6.
The school environment is engaging and responsive to the
child at each stage of his/her development.
In pre-primary years, CMS aims to develop perceptual,
motor, cognitive and socio-emotional levels of a child,
as the basis for readying him/her for school education,
and for life in society.
We create a happy environment for social contact with
peers, and we deliberately create opportunities for
young children to explore and learn through play,
dance, music, drama, art, games and sports.
We promote the development of creativity over
memorization. English is taught through Fitzroy phonics,
with spectacular results, with 4 and 5 year olds doing
early reading. Learners get some time on computers for
colouring and drawing.
18The daily schedule comprises:
Ÿ games and play activities
Ÿ movement and relaxation exercises
Ÿ outdoor play
Ÿ activities ensuring the routine (personal hygiene,
taking meals)
19Creative Arts To encourage creative arts such as theatre (drama) and dance from an early age, CMS provides opportunities with well-trained and experienced teachers at every campus. Dance In energizing dance classes, CMS students are taught various classical dances like Kathak and bharatnatyam, folk dance, as well as western genres like hip-hop, ballet, and jazz. Drama Theatre and drama classes boost confidence in students as they learn public speaking skills, as well as creativity as students innovatively think up ways to decorate sets, make costumes, and get into character for role play. 20

Empowering
Primary Years
GOALS
3Cs
• Confidence
• Competency in the Core Subjects
• Caring and Compassion
The Primary Curriculum at CMS is transacted in a
joyful environment that empowers primary age
children and develops their competencies.
We create a stimulating learning environment that
both supports individual children and
challenges/stretches them to achieve their best.
We help children to develop the qualities of hard
work, good manners and self-discipline. They come
out as confident individuals with a growing sense of
the social world around them.
2223
Holistic Development The aim of primary education in CMS is not only to give children a strong foundation for upper-primary and further levels of education, but also to enable the child to realize his or her potential as a unique individual and to develop as a social being through living and co- operating with others. One important aspect is primary pupils’ assisted engagement with technology. We develop a secure knowledge of computer technology and also an appreciation of its benefits and responsible use. Our smart classrooms are equipped with Interactive White Boards/flat panels with the latest relevant software with video and audio content for effective learning. 24
Experiential Learning
The CMS primary curriculum is increasingly based on
active learning rather than on passive relay of
information by a teacher. Experiential learning offers
in-depth study, giving the learner a better
understanding of the concepts and also an
understanding of the application of the knowledge in
the real world around them.
CMS seeks to develop critical thinking and problem
solving skills in primary age children through project
based learning in classes 4 and 5, and the integration of
HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) questions in
assessments/tests.

Junior Years Students aged 11-13 are emerging as junior youth and
curious adolescents. The foundations of solid learning
laid here set the stage for academic success in the
senior years.
CMS identifies key aspects occurring in transition from
childhood to adulthood, which form the foundation of
learning during the Junior years.

29Victorious Senior Years The senior years are a time for our students to learn valuable skills for life from our professional teachers. These years are the time to set some long-term goals and also to feel a sense of pride in accomplishment. The school sets rigorous academic standards as it is our desire to help every child to excel and to open their eyes to possibilities that lie ahead of them in the world at large. Our students' success is visible through excellent board results every year. This is based on: • Pupils’ support and motivation by teachers • A healthily competitive environment, including competition with your (past) self • A very high standard of teaching • Enrichment and remedial classes, based on a data-driven diagnosis of each individual learner’s progress and need. • A metacognitive approach – which makes pupils analysts of their own performance Goals - 5Ps Preparation for a Life of Service Pleasing Personality Performance in the Boards Praiseworthy Character Proficiency in English 30

37Technology in CMS Education Device-Based & Adaptive Learning CMS has started providing devices such as tablets and state-of-the-art computers for learning. 'Adaptive learning' is being trialled in a variety of pilot projects to personalise learning to the needs of individual students by pitching specific learning content to each student according to his or her own level of understanding and pace of learning. At the same time, meaningful data is automatically aggregated for teachers to use to inform their teaching strategies. This is enabled through continuous diagnostic assessment through the eLearning platform, combined with sophisticated algorithms and data analysis through machine learning and artificial intelligence. Some of these pilot projects include tablet-based mathematics adaptive learning software; 'Khan Academy' online content; and the 'Century Tech', ‘Genius Corner’, ‘LightSail’, and ‘Seneca’ artificially intelligent eLearning platforms. Interactive White Boards & Flat Panels CMS has installed interactive white boards across its classrooms a total of 1162 across CMS – to enhance the classroom teaching process. In addition 20 interactive flat panels have recently been purchased in the CMS quest to remain abreast with cutting edge technology, to further optimise children’s Teaching through Flat Panel learning experience and to make technological adoption easier for teachers. Our interactive boards are equipped with Tata ClassEdge content – quality, interactive learning content mapped to the children’s curriculum. Our LED screens and sound systems support events for children in our state-of-the-art auditoria and across CMS campuses. 38

World Unity Prayer
Every CMS event begins with a World Unity Prayer
Ceremony which teaches the concept of Unity. Children
dress up in national costumes of different countries and
holding aloft their respective national flags, they pray,
one by one, first for unity in the country they are
representing, followed by a prayer for unity in the world
and finally ending with the words “May Unity Prevail on
Earth.” These colorful ceremonies symbolize unity in
diversity and foster feelings of brotherhood and unity,
the pre-requisites for peace. All Religion Prayer
The All-Religion prayer has been an integral part of
every CMS event ever since the establishment of the
school, in which children recite prayers from all religious
scriptures on the same platform, along with the
message of unity of religions based on the idea that the
source of all religions is ONE God. The generosity of
spirit behind the All-Religion prayer has won hearts. In a
land riven by communal mistrust, the All-Religion Prayer
is nothing short of a revolutionary act — a powerful
teacher of the oneness of humankind, irrespective of
religious belief.

48World Parliament
A unique peace and unity education exercise at CMS
comprises of World Parliament sessions wherein
children roleplay as leaders of various countries of the
world. They deliberate in a mock World Parliament and
discuss issues like the growing arms threat, the
increasing ecological imbalance, increasing social
tensions and violence, the objective being to find
methods and approaches for mitigating these issues.
The central theme of all discussions focuses on how to
ensure unity and lasting world peace.
CMS is recipient of ‘The 2002 UNESCO Prize for
Peace Education’ in recognition of its efforts to
promote the universal values of education for
peace and tolerance at a time when these values
are increasingly being challenged.

Junior Youth Empowerment
Programme (JYEP)
The Junior Youth Empowerment Programme (JYEP) is
an international programme adapted by CMS for the
empowerment of its junior students (class 6-8). It
provides a unique platform to nurture the capacities of
junior youth, empowering them to fulfill their potential
for initiating individual and social transformation. It
enhances young people's powers of expression and
develops their ability to work with peers in unity, think
critically, analyze situations, make responsible choices,
and engage in acts of service to their communities.
The programme trains volunteer students from the
senior section (classes 9, 10 and 11) to become
'animators' (facilitators) for the junior youth in their
own campus (classes 6, 7 and 8). Bonds of friendship
and a group identity are formed as the junior youth
and their animator go through this process together for
three years.
Animators and junior youth first discuss the issues they
see in their schools or communities, and then decide

component helps students to develop virtues and skills
and to enhance their intellectual, social, emotional,
artistic and moral capabilities.

50The Virtues Project
Moral education has been a core part of the CMS
philosophy on education since the very beginning, and
CMS has sought to bring the most successful elements
of moral education from around the world to its
students. In the past year, CMS has adopted the globally
acclaimed Virtues Project, a set of 5 strategies to be
utilized in classrooms to ensure the moral development
of children: speaking the language of virtues,
recognizing teachable moments, honoring the spirit,
companioning, and setting clear boundaries. The Virtues
Project began in Canada and has found success in over
100 countries, even being endorsed by the Dalai Lama
and the United Nations. CMS is the first school in
Lucknow to adopt the Virtues Project and has invested
in it wholeheartedly, bringing in expert trainers from the
United States for ongoing training and support of
teachers. An inspiring transformation has been seen at
CMS, in which students are being supported to develop
their innate virtues such as generosity, determination,
and joyfulness. CMS has led groundbreaking work with
the Virtues Project which was featured in ‘The Times of
India’ in October 2019.

51The CMS Difference Go Green Initiatives Students of CMS are encouraged to recognize the challenges in the world that they live in, and be at the forefront of positive change to address the need of the hour. At present, environmental preservation is a critical part of CMS's emphasis on values education, and each CMS campus has an Eco Club and dedicated Environment Coordinator. Students collaborate with top environmental organizations including the Centre for Environment Education, UP NEDA, and the Prithvi Foundation. Students research water, biodiversity, and methods for energy conservation. In addition, they engage in service projects such as tree plantations, organic farming, composting, public awareness campaigns, and cleanliness drives such as the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan. CMS holds the International Environment Olympiad biannually, bringing students from all over the world to CMS in exploration of innovative ideas to protect the environment. Additionally, CMS pupils have won top awards related to energy conservation including the Wipro Earthian Award and the Paryavaran Mitra Puraskar. This year too, CMS Kanpur Road and Gomti Nagar Extension Campuses jointly won the Wipro Earthian Award which carried a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- for each campus. 52
Child Well-being
We at CMS believe that wellbeing is about children
being confident, healthy and happy. Children desire to
be loved, valued, respected, cared for and included. We
feel that wellbeing is also an important element of
overall student success. Students cannot achieve
academically if they feel unsafe and unhappy. They
cannot be expected to reach their full potential if they
have mental health issues and if we do not provide the
support they need. And they cannot be their best if
they are not motivated to adopt a healthy, active
lifestyle, both in and outside of school.
