Warsaw, Poland. But Peter is Volksdeutscher-of German blood. With
his blond hair and blue eyes, he looks just like the boy on the Hitler

Dad's thinking about the Andersen shelter he's just built in the garden; Elaine is thinking
about boys and stockings and her job at the factory. Jenny, aged eleven is worrying
about the animals. But Bobbie -- aged nine, has never been so excited in his life. He

old enough to join up -- he wants to see the planes -- He knows the names of all of them;

Alone on a Wide Wide Sea
Author: Morpurgo, Michael
There were dozens of us on the ship, all ages, boys and girls, and we were all up on deck
for the leaving of Liverpool, gulls wheeling and crying over our heads, calling good-bye, I
thought they were waving good-bye. None of us spoke. It was a grey day with drizzle in
the air, the great sad cranes bowing to the ship from the docks as we steamed past. That
is all I remember of England! When orphaned Arthur Hobhouse is shipped to Australia
after WW II he loses his sister, his country and everything he knows. The coming years will
test him to his limits, as he endures mistreatment, neglect and forced labour in the
Australian outback. But Arthur is also saved, again and again, by his love of the sea. And
when he meets a nurse whose father owns a boat-building business, all the pieces of his
broken life come together. Now, at the end of his life, Arthur has built a special boat for
his daughter Allie, whose love of the sea is as strong and as vital as her father's. Now Allie
has a boat that will take her to England solo, across the world's roughest seas, in search of
her father's long-lost sister! Will the threads of Arthur's life finally come together? How
far would you go to find yourself? This is the lyrical, life-affirming new novel from the
bestselling author of 'Private Peaceful'.

nightly air-raids. It is not an easy time to be a teenager, especially with the sweet
rationing, strict curfews and blackouts. Joan and best friend Doreen love going to the
cinema until the bombings intensify and then even that becomes too dangerous,
especially when an army deserter is found lurking near their home. Who is he and why
does he think Joan can help him? As the Blitz worsens, Joan and her friends make a
discovery that will tear the whole community apart...

forced to acknowledge all their weaknesses and guilt. Now Drakan, the Dragon Lord of
Dunark who once tried to feed Dina's mother to his revolting dragons, is ruthlessly
hunting down Shamers in order to burn them at the stake. He is the only completely
shameless human being Dina has ever met. If simple human decency is to survive,
Drakan must be opposed. But rebellions need leaders, and what better choice than the
legitimate heir to the lordship of Dunark, Dina's friend Nico? Never mind that Nico hates
swords and is reluctant even to kill a rabbit. Everyone wants him to be a hero. But as
Nico points out to Dina, heroes have a nasty habit of ending up dead...

She made her way down the cliff, and on to the beach. At the
edge of the waves, she stopped, shaking her wet paws. She
knew that somewhere ahead was her person, but far, far away. She miaowed
plaintively; stood staring at the moving blur of uncrossable sea. She led the way to
safety out of the blazing hell of blitzed Coventry. People touched her for luck; feared her
as an omen of disaster. Wherever she went she changed lives... From her beginning to
her end she never wavered. She was the Blitzcat.

                           Morgan)
                           Author: Morgan, Gaby
This moving and powerful collection of poems has been written by soldiers, nurses,
mothers, sweethearts, and family and friends who experienced WWI from different
standpoints. It records the early excitement and patriotism, the bravery, friendship, and
loyalty of the soldiers, and the heartbreak, disillusionment, and regret as the war went
on to damage a generation. It includes poems from Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke, Vera
Brittain, Eleanor Farjeon, Edward Thomas, Laurence Binyon, John McCrae, Siegfried
Sassoon, and many more. This collection was published in association with The Imperial
War Museum, which was founded in 1917 to collect and display material relating to
World War I while it was still being fought. Today, the IWM is unique in its coverage of
conflicts, especially those involving Britain and the Commonwealth, from World War I to
the present. They seek to provide for, and to encourage, the study and understanding of
the history of modern war and wartime experience.

                                                             Author: McRobbie, David
The story of a homeless boy who starts by losing everything, and - through his
experience as an evacuee in World War II - finds friendship, vocation and a place to
belong. Just then came: crump, CRUMP, CRUMP! Three bombs in quick succession,
coming frighteningly closer. With each explosion, the ground shook. Dust and chips
fell from the ceiling. Everyone in the shelter gasped at the same time. Vinnie held
his breath, waiting for the fourth bomb, but it didn't come. When Vinnie is sent
away from the bombs in London, he has no idea what awaits him. All he has left of
his old life is his harmonica. On the train, Vinnie meets fierce Kathleen, sweet Joey
and gangly Dobbs. The evacuee children find themselves thrown together in the
country town of Netterfold, which seems beautiful and peaceful - until they meet
the locals. There is a war raging across Europe, but Vinnie and his friends soon find
they have their own war to fight as they face up to terrifying teachers, bad billets,
and hostile neighbourhood kids who set out to make their lives as 'vaccies'
miserable. And when things start to go missing, they discover that there are
mysteries lurking in Netterfold's shadows, just waiting to be solved...Through
music and friendship, can Vinnie make peace and finally find a place where he belongs?
Blitz Boys
                         Author: Newbery, Linda
A story set in London during the Blitz. With German planes blitzing London, the wreckage
can be an exciting place to play after the fear of the night has died down. Whilst exploring a
bombed house one day, a lonely boy makes a friend whose father is an RAF pilot - much
more exciting than his own air-raid warden dad. But it takes genuine danger to make him
realise the difference between the heroism of fantasy and what people do when their
                         courage is needed for real.

                                                                            Bomber Boys
                                                                  Author: Bloor, Thomas
Johnny says he's a lucky charm for any crew he flies with, but
Len's not so sure. On a mission to Berlin, he finds out the
truth. This is a powerful WWII story. Barrington Stoke specialises in books for reluctant,
                                                         struggling and dyslexic readers.

                           101 Poems Against War
                           Author: Hollis, Matthew
From the earliest times poets have spoken out against the
horrors of war - many dying on the battlefields on which
they wrote. This anthology gathers together poems against war - from an infamous last
stand in Ancient Greece to the chemical warfare of the present-day Gulf. Featuring many
of our most treasured poets - Wilfred Owen, Philip Larkin, Stevie Smith and Emily
Dickinson among them - '101 Poems Against War' selects too from the poems being
written across the barricades: the enemy soldier, a German widow, a young Vietnamese
boy, and by contemporary Arabic poets. From the men who held their dying friends to
the agony of the women left behind, this anthology gathers those moments of warning
and protest from all corners of the earth: the times in which it was left to the poets to
speak out against the true terror of war.
