MISSION STATEMENT
CircusAid is the social justice branch of Holistic Circus Therapy LLC, an
occupational therapy social enterprise that provides professional development
trainings and services that utilize circus as an educational and therapeutic tool.
CircusAid’s programs are grounded in evidence based practices developed through
occupational therapy and social circus research. CircusAid projects help people
displaced by war and natural disasters attain transferable life skills to promote
greater success in unstable physical and political environments.

Since 2015, CircusAid has worked in Greece and France engaging over 3000
Afghani, Syrian, Iraqi, Sudanese, Eritrean, and Ethiopian refugees in social circus
programs. Participants have reported increased levels of happiness, motivation,
better sleep and improved connections to their communities as result of
engagement in CircusAid programs.
Athens 2017WHY LOMBOK
As result of multiple earthquakes in Lombok the Indonesian government reported “259
recorded fatalities, 1,033 injuries, 270,168 internally displaced people, 64,534 damaged
houses and 429 damaged public facilities.”
-World Health Organization 09.08.2018
From January 3rd to March 27th, 2019 we will
collaborate with the residents of Lombok to rebuild
communities by providing CircusAid programs that
involve various forms of occupational engagements.
We are conducting needs assessments to ensure our
presence will contribute to culturally relevant, safe
and sustainable community dwellings in which we
can host CircusAid workshops as well as provide a
shared space for gatherings, storage and shelter. The
intention is to provide sustainable infrastructures by
collaborating with local community members, and
to give psychosocial support through social circus
programs.
The Agung Siaga Community, active in coordinating
the humanitarian help, has invited CircusAid to take
part in providing community support in Lombok.
See Invitation Letter.
“Major needs identified include emergency shelter, first aid and health care including
psychosocial support, water, sanitation and food assistance.”
-International Federation of Red Cross 20.09.2018PROJECT
PHASE 1: Design. Materials. Research
A needs analysis conducted with local sources confirmed that bamboo dome
dwellings withstood all recent earthquakes within Lombok despite most other
kinds of housing being flattened for multiple tens of kilometers around. Many
local residents of Lombok prefer to rebuild dwellings with this earthquake
resistant eco friendly method.

PHASE 2: Building with Local Residents
We will build a shared community space for CircusAid programs with local
Lombok residents that will provide them knowledge, skills, resources and
paid labor to rebuild their homes. The build phase will support Lombok
residents and their economy by sourcing local materials, employing local
labor and fabricating bamboo domes to meet community priorities of support

Traditional ways of building will be incorporated with ecological and
earthquake resistant dome building methods.

PHASE 3
CircusAid Workshop
CircusAid provided over 1800 circus experiences to refugees living in Athens from
June-August 2018. The CircusAid dome enables a contained and safe space to run
our community building programs that promote physical and cognitive health as
well as psychosocial support. Participants in Lombok will have the opportunity to
engage in aerial, juggling, acro-balance, hula hooping, yoga, dance and Athens, 2018
performances. CircusAid programs increase self-confidence, joy and
community connection among participants.
From the voice of CircusAid participants: Thiva Refugee Camp, Athens
2018.
”Circus makes me happy.”
”It is beautiful.”
”The people that come here they love the children they take care of the children there is
love here.”
Athens, 2018
”Fun. All the things (activities) are good and funny”
” It (circus) makes me feel strong and happy”
”(In circus) I learn to play. I thought I can’t play but I can play something.
"(I feel) happy, relaxed and tonight sleep very good”
”(I) feel relaxed after circus. I want to come back every time.”
We will use the programs proven to be successful in Athens to bring psychosocial aid
to the Lombok earthquake victims. We plan to deliver daily circus workshops in
Lombok to engage all ages in activities that promote resilience and community
