Oeko-Institut e.V.
The Oeko-Institut is a leading European research and consultancy institute working for a sustainable
future. Founded in 1977, the institute develops principles and strategies for realising the vision of
sustainable development globally, nationally and locally.

Based on value-oriented research, the institute provides consultancy for decision-makers in politics,
industry and civil society, showing them ways of tackling the environmental challenges we face in
an age of rapid social change and globalisation. The experts draw upon a broad array of scientific
and research methods and also employ a transdisciplinary approach in their work.

Our key clients are ministries and federal agencies, industrial enterprises and the European Union.
In addition, the institute is commissioned by non-governmental organisations and environmental
associations. We collaborate with research institutions and are active in national and international
networks such as in Ecornet (Ecological Research Network).

The Oeko-Institut employs more than 170 staff, including 120 researchers at three locations in
Germany – Freiburg, Darmstadt and Berlin.

Environmental Law & Governance
The Environmental Law & Governance Division addresses legal and social-science questions
regarding the shaping of sustainable environmental policy. The division specialises in the analysis,
design and evaluation of policy instruments and legal regulations. Our researchers provide
consultancy and carry out both public and private research projects on European, national and
regional levels.
