1. Guiding Principles
Our approach to the development and delivery of the AKS ‘Return to School’ plan is built on the
following principles:

1. Whether in school or at home, children and young people should receive a high-quality
education that enables them to progress through the curriculum.

2. School should be a safe environment for students and staff, informed by relevant government
guidance and the available evidence, recognising that we cannot eliminate all risks. See below
for a link to the government guidance:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/actions-for-schools-during-the-coronavirus-
    outbreak/guidance-for-full-opening-schools

3. We will follow government guidelines and United Learning policies to implement precautionary
and safeguarding measures across our site.

4. Our plans remain under continual review, in respect of emerging guidance and feedback from
   students, staff and parents.

5. We will strive to accommodate the diverse needs of all members of our community - those who
are excited by the return to school and those who are concerned about returning.

6. We accept our responsibility to support the health and wellbeing of all our community members
as we develop the plans to welcome pupils back to school.

7. We acknowledge the need to make some adjustments to the usual school practices to enable
social distancing and lessons to be delivered.

8. We will provide regular updates about how our return to school plan is being delivered.

2. Key Points of Contact
If parents, students or staff have any concerns or questions relating to the material covered in this
document, or our return to school plan, please contact Mr Harrow (Headmaster),
headmaster@akslytham.com or Mr McKeown (Deputy Head), Allan.McKeown@akslytham.com.

Alternatively, if you need to contact the school for any other reason, our school telephone numbers
are all staffed: 01253 784100

2.1 Communication with parents
As you will know, many schools across the country are now seeing COVID cases within the school
community. Our policy, as and when we do get cases, will be to follow the PHE/DfE advice. We will
write to those within the pupil’s bubble and to those who have been in close contact with the
positive case giving guidance on what action they need to take. When we have cases, we will ensure
that all those who need to be informed get this information as soon as possible.

                                                                                                        3

2.2 Government guidance on school restrictions during lockdowns
The Government has published details on steps schools may be asked to take in the event of local
coronavirus lockdowns. The intention is to keep schools open as much as possible, with other local
measures taken before any school restrictions are imposed.
The guidance sets out a four tier system of school restrictions – with the guidance saying: "In the
exceptional circumstances where some level of restriction to education or childcare is required in a
local area, local and national partners will carefully consider which of the tiers is the most
appropriate one to implement."

The tiers are:

    • Tier 1 – The default position for areas in national government intervention is that education
and childcare settings will remain open. Therefore, under Tier 1 schools remain open, the
only difference being that face coverings should be worn by staff and pupils in corridors and
communal areas in settings where pupils in Year 7 and above are educated.
    • Tier 2 – Early years settings, primary schools and special schools will continue to allow all
children to attend on-site. Secondary schools move to a rota model, combining on-site
provision with remote education, while allowing full-time attendance on-site to vulnerable
children and young people and the children of critical workers.
    • Tier 3 - Early years settings, primary schools and special schools will continue to allow all
children to attend on-site. Secondary schools would allow full-time on-site provision only to
vulnerable children, the children of critical workers and selected year groups (to be
identified by the Department for Education). Other pupils should not attend on-site. Remote
education to be provided for all other pupils.
    • Tier 4 – Early years settings and schools closed, except for vulnerable children and the
children of critical workers. All other pupils should not attend on-site and should receive
remote education. Special schools will remain open for all pupils

3. Arrangements for Learning

3.1 Attendance
In line with the government guidance, the expectation is that all pupils will return to school.

3.2 Senior School arrangements
The following information is based on the government’s latest guidance (as of 30th December 2020),
with regards to school opening for all pupils from September 2020. The guidance can be viewed at

    3. 11L form room will move from room 39 to 44
    4. 11R form room will move from room 41 to 40
    5. 11S form room will move from room 40 to 41
    6. Pupils will be permitted to come to school in their games kit on the day in which they have
       afternoon games.
    7. Face coverings – from Monday 14th September, we are recommending that Senior School
students and staff wear face coverings whilst in transit within the school buildings.

Updates based on the latest government guidance – issued 28th August 2020
   1. Use of face coverings in school – It is vital that face coverings are worn correctly to avoid
inadvertently increasing the risks of transmission. Safe wearing of face coverings requires
sanitising of hands before and after touching – including to remove or put them on – and the
safe storage of them in individual, sealable plastic bags between use.

    2. Peripatetic Staff – peripatetic music lessons will take place, with social distancing and the
correct environment in mind. Full risk assessments have been carried out and pupils and
parents will be given relevant guidance, depending on the instrument and nature of the
       lesson.

If there are further updates to the government’s guidance, we will update our guidance accordingly.

This guidance document will also be updated as the term progresses, with any modifications as
required.

In summary, school will begin and finish at the usual times but pupils in each year group will have
their own entry/exit point and will be housed in particular zones around the school, where the
majority of their lessons will take place. Staff will move between the classrooms and so the
movement time between lessons will remain. There will be some movement around the school site
for specialist lessons and also at lunchtime, but all movement will be encouraged to ‘stick to the left’
in corridors and follow the one-way system on the stairs up to the science labs and in the Dining
Hall.

All pupils will be briefed at the start of term and be made aware of the importance of sticking to the
rules and the expectations required at this time. For our new Year 7, this will happen as part of their
Induction Morning on Friday 4th September.

Please refer to the maps which accompany this document for further detail in terms of locations.

                                                                                                       7

3.3 Virtual Classroom
As part of our planning for this academic year, there will be times when either pupils or staff are
having to isolate at home due to COVID, even though they feel well. In such scenarios, we want to
ensure the continuity of education is maintained. The plan for the various scenarios is below and this
is live from Monday 21st September.

Scenario 1 - a pupil is at home isolating but is well enough to continue with their learning. Pupils will
have access to the live lesson being taught in the classroom, via a Teams link (see the guide below).

Scenario 2 - a teacher is at home isolating but is well enough to continue teaching (and if
personal/home circumstances allow). The live lesson will be streamed into the pupils' normal
classroom (there will be a teacher with the class to supervise) via a Teams link.

Scenario 3 - a year group bubble is sent home. Pupils will have access to the live lesson taught by
their teacher, who would still be in school (see the guide below).

                                                                                                       15

Scenario 4 - the school is in a complete lockdown situation again; all lessons would be taught
remotely via Microsoft Teams.

A 'how to guide' is included below for pupils to follow, so they know how to access the virtual
classroom through Microsoft Teams, if they are at home.

Accessing a Virtual Classroom

If pupils (who are at home) find themselves stuck in the lobby of their virtual class, they should check
the posts in the class Team for further instructions or email their class teacher.

                                                                                                     16

4.Health and Hygiene

4.1 Training and information
Staff and all community members will be asked to follow the government guidelines. Posters
displayed throughout the school buildings and classrooms will remind the school community about
the important measures needed to protect themselves and others as well as encourage good
hygiene practices. Hand sanitizer will be located at every individual entrance/exit point and in all
classrooms.

Students will all have a briefing with regards to the safe hygiene practice and how the school will
run, along with clear expectations of the need to follow the guidelines.

4.2 Access to our site
If a parent must be on the school site, they must follow the social distancing measures that are in
effect. Visitors will be permitted by appointment only and the Pavilion will be closed to visitors
during the week.

4.3 Onset of symptoms
Covid-related Pupil Illness
• Any pupil with symptoms of Covid-19 should not attend school for 10 days and is expected to
undertake a test under the NHS Test and Trace programme. The pupil/parents are instructed to
notify the school immediately if a positive result is obtained.
• Where a positive result is obtained, the school will contact the local Health Protection Team for
advice on any further action required.
• A negative result means the pupil can return to school. Negative test results should be shown to
    matron.
Where a pupil indicates an individual in their household is unwell with symptoms compatible with
Covid-19, they must self-isolate for up to 14 days. Under the Test and Trace programme there is an
expectation that their symptomatic household member is tested. If this test result is negative the
pupil can return to school if they do not have any COVID-19 related symptoms.

Suspected Covid Case

In the event of a suspected case -

• Pupil isolated in Matron’s office, and the Community Hub if necessary, if awaiting collection in
line with government guidelines – the Community Hub will not be used for other purposes
• Students/teachers will walk directly to Matron’s office during lesson time to avoid contact with
    others
• Staff and pupils who were with the affected party should wash their hands but do not need to go
    home unless symptomatic.
• A small quantity of PPE, i.e. disposable face masks, gloves, and apron and suitable waste streams
will be required for handing suspected cases.

                                                                                                       17

• Cleaning and disinfection carried out by cleaning staff in accordance with DfE guidance COVID-
    19: cleaning of non-healthcare settings
• Matron will contact parents to advise and arrange pickup

4.4 Masks/face coverings
From Monday 14th September, therefore, and in line with DfE guidance, we are recommending that
Senior School students and staff wear face coverings whilst in transit within the school buildings.
Face coverings need to be stored in a bag whilst not in use, and individuals should sanitise their
hands when putting them on and taking them off; they should also be laundered regularly. We
appreciate that some individuals have exemptions from wearing face covering.

Masks are available for staff use if they need to look after and isolate a student who displays
symptoms of COVID-19.

From Monday 2nd November and in line with the most recent DfE guidance on face
coverings/masks: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/face-coverings-in-education
the wearing of face coverings will now be an expectation when in transit around the Senior School,
such as in corridors, in the lunch queue and so on. The requirement for face coverings includes their
wearing on school buses, which has been the case throughout.

4.5 Gloves
Plastic gloves are not recommended except in the case of persons in a specific role such as Matron
or our cleaning staff.

4.6 Hand sanitiser
We will be following the government guidelines which have stressed the importance of handwashing
and provide guidance about handwashing. Students and staff will be asked to wash their hands
frequently throughout the school day following these guidelines.

There will be hand disinfection stations at the entry/exit points to the buildings. Students are
encouraged to use these stations if handwashing facilities are not easily available.

4.7 Social distancing
We will implement the social distancing which all community members are expected to follow, as
referenced by our Social Distancing Policy, on the school website and in line with the guidance,
which can be found at https://www.akslytham.com/about-aks/covid-19

4.8 Cleaning
The school, including desks and chairs as well as all common areas, have been thoroughly cleaned
and disinfected. Additional and frequent disinfection will be done several times daily following the
best practice guidelines. Members of our cleaning team will remain in the Senior School to regularly
clean the common areas and carefully disinfect surface items such as handrails, doorknobs, switches,
sinks, toilets and so on. Each venue will be equipped with anti-bacterial wipes. At the end of the
school day, a thorough cleaning of the school buildings, classrooms and all common areas will
be completed.

                                                                                                     18

4.9 School drop-off and afternoon pick-up
We will ask parents to maintain social distancing from students, staff and other parents at drop-off
and afternoon pick-up. Students in different year groups will all have different entry and exit points
to the school, so they stay with their zones as much as possible.

                                                                                                     19
