About North Shore Rescue
North Shore Rescue provides search and rescue services on Vancouver’s North Shore. Specializing
in mountain search and rescue in the North Shore Mountains, the team also provides urban search
capabilities for missing children, adults, and the elderly across the North Shore’s three urban
municipalities. The team also provides educational programs focusing on safe wilderness travel.
Comprised exclusively of dedicated volunteers, North Shore Rescue provides services 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year.
Originally formed as a disaster response team in 1965, the team soon evolved into providing
a needed search and rescue service for hikers, skiers, climbers, snowshoers, and other outdoor
recreationalists lost or injured in the North Shore mountains.
The team operates an extensive rescue infrastructure spanning the North Shore. The Tim Jones
Rescue Center houses the team’s small fleet of rescue vehicles including their mobile command
center. The Rescue Center acts as the team’s training venue, where they practice and update their
skills in techniques from rope rescue through to the latest medical techniques for backcountry
rescue.
The team also operates search and rescue stations located at the wilderness boundaries; maintains
an extensive radio repeater network spanning the North Shore; and stocks several backcountry
emergency caches providing ready access to emergency supplies for team members. North Shore
Rescue maintains and operates an extensive infrastructure that ensures the team is able to quickly -
and safely - respond to calls for assistance.
North Shore Rescue has led the development of many innovative search techniques and
technologies. North Shore Rescue pioneered the development of the “long line” helicopter rescue
system. In a long-line rescue, a rescue technician acc to reach terrain by being
attached to a 150 to 300 foot line slung beneath a helicopter, enabling direct insertion into, and
evacuation from, terrain that would other to access from the
ground. Members of North Shore Rescue continue to innovate and improve the equipment and
systems that support this key rescue capability.
2018 has been a record breaking year for NSR.
As of the end of October, NSR has responded to over
141 calls and put in 5121 volunteer hours!!!

www.rotaryrideforrescue.orgNorth Shore Rescues’ Upcoming Funding Needs Currently, North Shore Rescue is facing a number of costly projects to replace vital infrastructure and equipment - critical to maintaining effective rescue coverage on the North Shore. Replacement of Search and Rescue Stations. NSR has 5 Search and Rescue (SAR) stations, strategically located across the North Shore. The SAR stations act as advanced search management and equipment stations. Two of these SAR stations, near Cleveland Dam and Lynn Headwaters, are situated immediately adjacent to helicopter landing sites. These two important SAR stations are now in need of replacement Both of these stations are over 10 years old, and are aging ATCO trailers. They were built at a time when the search and rescue volume on the North Shore was about half of what it is today. Hundreds of successful rescues have been run out these two SAR stations. The time has come to replace these we rescue. Replacement of Helicopter Long Line Kits A critical rescue component is in need of replacement. To effect “long line” rescues, dedicated kits are used, containing several aviation-grad lines, connectors, a helicopter mating system, air rescue harnesses, communications equipment, and helmets. As aviation-grade material, these expensive kits have a limited lifespan, and will need to be replaced. The current kits are approaching end-of-life, and will need near-term replacement. “The big challenge for us is fundraising. We do not have a stable source of funding, so every year all of the local search and rescue teams are going out there and they’re fundraising,” -North Shore Rescue’s Team Leader, Mike Danks www.rotarywestvan.com www.rotarywestvan.com www.rotaryrideforrescue.org www.rotaryrideforrescue.org
