Scholarship Opportunities: Canada
The first section of this document contains a detailed list of scholarships for Canadian citizens in Canada/United
States. The second part of this document lists scholarship opportunities that allow Canadian citizens to go abroad.

Scholarships for Canadian Citizens in Canada/United States
Spotlight:
  James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program
  One year fellowship to work as a research assistant for a Carnegie senior scholar.

  Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program
  Any program at Stanford University. Includes MBA, JD, MC, etc.

  McCall MacBain Scholarships
  The McCall MacBain Scholarships draw outstanding students from Canada and around the world to pursue a
  funded master’s or professional degree in a variety of disciplines at McGill University, combined with a
  comprehensive enrichment program. Candidates must have Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or
  refugee status in Canada.

  Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Fellowship
  Each year, the Foundation awards up to fifteen scholarships to Canadian and foreign doctoral candidates
  pursuing research related to one of its four founding themes: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible
  Citizenship, Canada in the World, and People and their Natural Environment. Fellows must be nominated by
  their universities.

American Historical Association Albert J. Beveridge Grant for Research in the History of the Western
Hemisphere
Supports research in the history of the Western Hemisphere (United States, Canada, and Latin America). Preference
will be given to advanced doctoral students, non-tenured faculty, and unaffiliated scholars, and to those with
specific research needs, such as the completion of a project or a discrete segment thereof.

American Musicological Society (AMS) Howard Mayer Brown Ph.D. Fellowship
Fellowships support minority scholars and teachers in musicology who are members of a group historically
underrepresented in the discipline, including African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian
Americans, and, in Canada, aboriginal peoples and visible minorities (as defined by Canadian legislation). The
fellowship offers support for one year. Students are eligible who have completed at least one year of full-time

graduate work, intend to pursue a Ph.D., and are in good standing at their home institution. They should show
evidence of academic excellence and promise of continuing achievement in music scholarship. Those in the earlier
stages of the degree are particularly encouraged to apply.

American Philosophical Society (APS) Phillips Fund for Research in Native American Studies
The fund supports research in Native American linguistics, ethnohistory, and the history of studies of Native
Americans in the continental United States and Canada. Grants are not made for projects in archaeology,
ethnography, psycholinguistics, or for the preparation of pedagogical materials. The grants are intended for such
costs as travel, tapes, films, and consultants’ fees but not for the purchase of books or permanent equipment. The
grant offers support for one year.

Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) 100th Anniversary Legacy Fellowship funded by the
Charitable Trust

Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Elizabeth and Rachel Massey Award
For post-graduate studies in the visual arts, such as painting or sculpture, or in music. This award is tenable in
Canada or abroad.

Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Memorial Scholarship
 Honors those for whom the CFUW Charitable Trust receives memorial donations. At the time of application, the
candidate must be enrolled in master’s studies in science, mathematics or engineering. This fellowship is tenable in
Canada or abroad.

Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) Bayduza Postdoctoral Fellowships for the Study of
Modern and Contemporary Ukraine
Fellowships support research on the development of the study of modern and contemporary Ukraine. Fellows are
expected to be in residence at CIUS in Edmonton, Canada, for the duration of the fellowship term, and to assist
and participate in the overall program planning and activities of CIUS. Although all applications in fields associated
with the humanities and social sciences will be considered, research proposals in the areas of identities, nationalism,
regions, borders, social values, historical politics and memory, change, and conflict, will be given preference. The
fellowship may be renewed for a second year.

Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) University of Alberta Graduate Fellowships
Fellowships’ support research in Ukrainian studies in Canada and internationally. The fellowships are for one year.

Dr. Margaret McWilliams Pre-Doctoral Fellowship
Awarded to a woman who has completed at least one calendar year in a full-time doctoral program and is enrolled
in full-time studies in Canada or abroad at the time of application

Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) Fellows Program
Three-year graduate fellowship with stipend, or one-year fellowship for professional development. Proposals can
cover any topic, as long as they address one or more of the seven FFAR Challenge areas. The FFAR Fellow
program is especially interested in innovative, novel, and collaborative research in food and agricultural, including all
aspects of digital agriculture, phytobiome, soil microbiome, precision agriculture, and breeding technology. Fellows
will have the opportunity to work with the leading industry scientists in the United States and Canada as their
personal mentors.

Frank and Brennie Morgan Prize for Outstanding Research in Mathematics by an Undergraduate Student
(AMS-MAA-SIAM)
The Morgan Prize is awarded for outstanding research in mathematics. It is made jointly by the American
Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied
Mathematics. The prize is awarded annually to any undergraduate student in a college or university in Canada,
Mexico, the United States or its possessions, for outstanding research in mathematics.

Geological Society of America (GSA) Graduate Research Grant
GSA research grants provide partial support of master’s and doctoral thesis research in the geological sciences for
graduate students enrolled in universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America.

Google US/Canada PhD Fellowship Program
The Google US/Canada PhD Fellowship Program recognizes outstanding graduate students doing exceptional
work in computer science and related disciplines. Students do not apply directly to Google but must instead be
nominated by their university.

Government of Canada Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship
Banting Fellowship supports research in the areas of health, natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and
humanities at a host institution in the United States or Canada.

Handweavers Guild of America (HGA) Scholarships in Research and Artistic Merit
For students enrolled in accredited programs in the United States and Canada. Scholarship funds are for furthering
education in the field of fiber arts, including textile research, history and conservation; and may be used for tuition
only. HGA Scholarship applicants can fall into one of two categories – artistic merit or scholarly research.
Scholarships are awarded on artistic and technical excellence rather than financial need. The scholarly research
category is recommended for those applicants focused on textile research, history, conservation, etc., rather than
artistic mastery.

Margaret McNamara Education Grants
MMEG awards education grants on a competitive basis to exceptional women, who are at least 25 years old, from
developing countries who are enrolled as full-time students for the following academic term in accredited
universities in the United States and Canada, have demonstrated financial need and are committed to working for
the well-being of women and children.

Virtu Foundation Violin, Viola, Cello Instrument Scholarship
Applications for violin, viola, and cello instrument scholarships on a continuing basis. Scholarship applications will
be accepted from pre-professional musicians of all ages who are residents of the United States or Canada. The
major criteria for awarding scholarships are: musical skill and potential; instrument need; available financial
resources; availability of a suitable instrument. The Foundation has access to instruments suitable for musicians
whose age, training level, skills and experience vary widely.

Women in Medicine Leadership Scholarship
Women in Medicine (WIM) awards two LGBTQ Leadership Scholarships for female medical students enrolled in
their first, second, or third year of allopathic, osteopathic, or naturopathic medical schools in the United States or
Canada. The scholarships are presented at the WIM annual meeting, with the expectation that the medical student
must attend the conference and be present to receive their awards. Applicants should be in good academic standing
and have actively contributed/demonstrated leadership for the LGBTQ community.

Scholarships for Canadian Citizens to Go Abroad
Spotlight:

  DAAD EMGIP-Bundestag Internship
  Offers paid internship opportunities for U.S. and Canadian undergraduate and Master’s students in the
  German parliament, the Bundestag. The internships are two months long and we try to match the
  position with the student’s interests and experiences. In addition to contributing to the respective
  offices, interns have the opportunity to study legislative and administrative procedures in the German
  parliament. Requires fluency in German. For students in fields such as political science, international
  relations, law, history, economics or German.

  David L. Boren Fellowships
  Boren Fellowships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding
  opportunities for U.S. graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions
  critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and
  Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe,
  Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

  Gates Cambridge Scholarship
  Graduate study at Cambridge University.

  Rhodes Scholarship
  Fully-funded opportunity to pursue postgraduate degree at Oxford University.

  Schwarzman Scholars Program
  One-year master’s degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

  Yenching Academy
  Master’s degree in interdisciplinary China Studies at Peking University.

A.C. Elias, Jr. Travel Fellowship
The American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS) A. C. Elias Irish-American Research Travel
Fellowship, with $2500 in annual funding, supports “documentary scholarship on Ireland in the period between the
Treaty of Limerick (1691) and the Act of Union (1800), by enabling North American-based scholars to travel to
Ireland and Irish-based scholars to travel to North America for furthering their research.” Projects conducting
original research on any aspect of 18C Ireland qualify for consideration, but recipients must be members of ASECS
who have permanent residence in the United States or Canada or be members of its Irish sister organization, The
Eighteenth-Century Ireland Society, residing on the island of Ireland. Prize winners are chosen by an independent
jury of three scholars from different disciplines after each is seen by readers in the applicant’s field.

Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship
Intended to help students who are planning to participate in archaeological field work for the first time. Students
majoring in archaeology or related disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. The Scholarship Fund provides
stipend to pay expenses associated with participation in an archaeological field work project (minimum stay one
month/4 weeks). The scholarship is open to students who have begun their junior year of undergraduate studies at
the time of application and have not yet completed their first year of graduate school at a college or university in the
United States or Canada.

Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Memorial Scholarship

Cultural Vistas Global Internships
Customized internship placement and work abroad programs for U.S. and Canadian students and young
professionals for language development. Internship placements are tailored to each individual’s skill set, career
aspirations, and experience as determined by an interview with our staff. Summer and year-round programs are
available. Language and GPA requirements for some countries.

Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) University of Alberta Graduate Fellowships
Fellowships support research in Ukrainian studies in Canada and internationally. The fellowships are for one year.

The Inter American Press Association Scholarship
In 1954 the IAPA established its Scholarship Fund for young American or Canadian journalists for an academic
year’s study in some Latin American or Caribbean country. Applicants must be natives of countries in the Western
Hemisphere, journalists or students in the final year of their journalism course, be between 21 and 35 years old, be
fluent in the language of the country where they will go to study. Journalism students will have to complete their
university studies before the start of the scholarship year.

International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) Short-Term Graduate Research Travel Grant
The ICSS offers 4-6-week travel grants to enable master’s and doctoral students to do research related to their thesis
or dissertation at a Canadian university in the field of Canadian Studies. Applicants submit their applications directly
to the secretariat of their national Canadian Studies association, which then submits the applications to the ICCS by
November 24, 2015. Deadlines for applicant submission vary with each Canadian Studies association.

Jamaica Field Service Project (JASFP) Abroad
Participating students train and work in Jamaica under the supervision of our certified professors and instructors.
With over 100 participating universities in the US and Canada, the JAFSP brought volunteers to more Jamaican
schools in 2019 than any other US aid organization. Apply soon for this three-credit service learning course in
Jamaica. www.jafsp.org.

Killam Fellowships Program
Provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in Canada and the United States
to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in the other country.

Saltire Scholarships
Scotland’s Saltire Scholarships is a program of scholarships offered by the Scottish Government in collaboration
with Scottish universities in the areas of science, technology, creative industries, healthcare, medical sciences, and
renewable and clean energy. Scholarship offers up to 50 awards, each worth £8000, towards tuition fees for any one
year of full-time study on a postgraduate master’s programme at any of Scotland’s higher education institutions.
Available for citizens from US, Canada, China, India, Japan, and Pakistan.
