                 “Many vignerons like to
                 think that their vineyard
                has special qualities, but
                in this instance the belief
                      is well-based.”

SCULPTURES IN THE GARDEN 2019
Welcome to Rosby Vineyard and to Sculptures in the Garden for 2019. For the 9th year in a row
the Norton-Knight family have worked tirelessly to showcase artists, both local and from many
parts of Australia, who display their considerable talent for our enjoyment and benefit. The
Rosby garden, like much of New South Wales and this area, is suffering from the prolonged dry
spell but still manages to inspire us with its beauty and evidence of care and hard work.

This year I welcome to Mudgee Stephen King, an internationally renowned sculptor and
previous winner of Sculpture by the Sea. Stephen will open Sculptures in the Garden at 11am
on Saturday and will talk about his prolific career. I also welcome Nick Vickers, an art expert
and enthusiast who will join Stephen King to form part of the selection panel to select three
works that will join the Sculpture Walk in Lawson Park. Bradley Hammond, Orange Regional
gallery director, joins us as well to discuss the progress and benefits of the proposed Mid-
Western Regional Art Gallery.

Mid-Western Regional Council is proud to join with Sculptures in the Garden to fund the joint
$25,000 acquisition prize. The Moolarben Coal Prize of $5,000 and the Friends of Sculptures in
the Garden $10,000 prize will also be announced on Saturday morning. I thank these sponsors
and acknowledge the part they play in the continued development of the Sculpture Walk and
the interest and enjoyment it brings to locals and tourists who get to see sculptures displayed in
a beautiful and natural outdoor setting.

The local branch of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT will be parking cars, manning the gate and catering
for visitors again this year. I would like to congratulate them on their dedication to raising funds
for such a worthwhile cause each year.

We must not forget the organisers of SIG for Kids and the work they have done in encouraging
children from all over the district to display creativity and fun and to be so involved in this event.

Finally, to the Norton-Knight family, the committee of SIG, their helpers and volunteers, I would
like to say thank you and well done. We all warmly welcome and thank the artists for supporting
this event and for their creativity that brings so much enjoyment and artistic awareness to all
who visit Rosby Vineyard and garden this weekend.

I sincerely hope you all – workers, visitors, artists – have an enjoyable and successful weekend.

SCULPTURES IN THE GARDEN 2019
In 2016 we initiated “Friends of Sculptures in the Garden” with the goal of raising funds to offer an acquisition prize
for contributing artists. We raised $5,000 for the first Friends acquisition prize, and in 2017 and 2018 we doubled
our raised funds to $10,000. This year we are close to raising that amount again, and at the time of going to print we
are still receiving donations. We would like to thank the following Friends of Sculptures in the Garden for making this
    possible:

Diana & James Anderson, Paul & Alison Bacon, Bean Baillieu & Belinda Moon, Sally Barry & Chris
Gossling, Jayne & Peter Bentivoglio, Peter Bishop, Libby & Jim Bowman, Andrew & Kate Buchanan,

The winner of the Friends of Sculptures in the Garden prize will be announced at the official opening at 11am on
Saturday 12th October by Stephen King and the winning sculpture will form part of the Mudgee sculpture walk with a
Friends of Sculptures in the Garden plaque.

The driving force behind Friends of Sculptures in the Garden is to provide another prize incentive for all sculptors to
consider exhibiting at Sculptures in the Garden. Our objective is to continue enhancing the quality of works that are
displayed in the Mudgee sculpture walk.

For the 2020 event we are seeking donations of $100 or more to once again offer a Friends of Sculptures in the
Garden acquisition prize. As a friend of SIG you will receive:

    • Ticket to our Pre-Launch Event & Exclusive Preview of the Exhibition

If you are interested in becoming a Friend of Sculptures in the Garden, please speak to the SIG committee or the staff

for kids!
What is at the bottom of your garden? Would you find bubbles, a drawing tree, seed heads, a
teepee village, fishing, adorable Guide Dog puppies as well as amazing sculptures created by
many talented children? In the kids section this year you will find a “Garden Wonderland”

                Sensory Sculpture Prize
Once again this year we invited sculptors to submit pieces that could be appreciated by people
with vision impairment in honour of our association with the Mudgee Support Group of Guide
Dogs NSW/ACT. You will find symbols next to the pieces exhibited that fall into the Sensory
Sculpture category. The hand symbol designates that the sculpture may be touched, and the
ear symbol indicates the sculpture can be appreciated through listening.

On the indicated sculptures, please feel free to shut your eyes and enhance your appreciation
of the sculpture through your sense of touch and/or hearing. Please take care to ensure that
you do not damage the sculpture or yourselves whilst doing this. The Sculptors Society has
generously donated a prize of $300 this year for the best Sensory Sculpture and the winner will
be announced from 11am on Saturday 12th October.
