                          Happy 4th of July
This Month’s activities:
July 17 - 23 Chapter Outing, Green Bay

For anyone planning to attend the Green Bay outing in July. Please be aware
that Green Bay is Federally controlled water as it is connected to Lake Michigan
and is under the jurisdiction of the Coast Guard. As such, there are a few
additional requirements you need to comply with when navigating these waters.

There is a new requirement when operating your boat that you use the quick dis-
connect engine cut-off swith (ECOS) lanyard on your throttle control when
operating on plane (if equipped). Please review the following link for
information. All agencies patrolling green bay and lake michigan are activly
checking boaters to ensure compliance: https://www.boatus.com/expert-
advice/expert-advice-archive/2021/march/new-law-requires-skippers-to-use-
engine-cutoff-device

You must have on board the required emergency audio and visual distress
signaling (VDSs) equipment when operating on federally controlled bodies of
water (to include Green Bay). I hightly recommend you have signaling devices
that cover both day and night as an evening breakdown could easily put you on
the water after dark. The basic requirements are:

Audio divice: boat horn or handheld whistle

For Day Use only: Handheld Orange Smoke (pyro-technique), floating Orange
Smoke (pyro-technique) or orange signaling flag (non pyro-technique)

For Night Use only: Electric signaling light such as a hand held spot light (non
pyro-technique)

Both day and night (eliminates the need for the above): Hand-held red flares
(pyro-technique) or meteor (flare gun) red flares. If you use flares, make sure
you have a full package and they are not expired.

I have attached the Wisconsin Boating Regulations for your information. See
pages 9 - 15.

When trailering in Wisconsin, please make sure your trailer and boat are free of
organic material to prevent the spread of invasive species, also ensure you pull
all drain plugs (boat hull and live wells) and ensure the hull, live wells and all
compartments are drained.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Jerry Ford

Next Month’s activities:

Message from the President:

Happy 4th of July! A huge thanks goes out to all our veterans and first
responders and their families. Without them we would not have the privileges
we enjoy today.
Welcome to SUMMER! Time to spend time with family and friends and take a
trip.
We hope you continue fishing for muskies in northern waters, like GREEN BAY,
WI where we are heading on July 17th. There is still time to sign up for this
Chapter Outing. We are staying in hotels so no formal thing about staying the
entire week. Our past Chapter President, Jerry Ford, and his wife Cheryl, live in
the Green Bay Metro and are anxious to have us visit their new home and fishing
this lake. Member Mike Hopkins will be providing tips for us prior to the trip and
will be setting up a video call on Sunday, July 11th. Just send me a text or email
if you are interested so you can be included in the call. (618-971-7806)

I attended the recent IMA (Illinois Muskie Alliance) meeting in Bloomington, IL on
Saturday, June 26th. For those that are not aware of the IMA it is the governing
group that communicates with ILDNR and represents all the muskie chapters and
groups in the state of IL. IMA President and Shawnee Muskie Hunters Chapter
Member, Robert Kerans, is a big supporter of muskies and improving the fishery.
The IMA has setup a TOUR of the JAKE WOLF FISH HATCHERY in Topeka, IL
(South of Peoria) on Saturday, August 14th at 10:00 AM. We need you to Pre-
Register PLEASE. Just send Shannon an email or text that you want to
participate. See attached PDF with a preview of the hatchery.

Lasty, some good news from Canada. It appears they are opening their borders
to US Citizens again in August 2021 for those fully vaccinated. Let us hope it is
true for the fisher families and lodge owners.

Good luck, and have fun fishing this year!
Jim Beaty
President, Shawnee Muskie Hunters Chapter

From the Desk of Walt Krause:
It’s to hot to fish for Southern waters for Muskies

I think that is it for this month. Stay safe and hang in there.

    1. Please send membership numbers for your organization.
    2. Please complete “Home Lake” form for your group.
    3. Please forward Cast About to members in your organization.
IMA OBJECTIVE #1: UNIFY THE MEMBERS OF THE IMA, INC. IN THE
PURSUIT AND REALIZATION OF THE GOAS OF THE IMA INC.
It’s arranged, our 3rd qt. mtg will be held on Saturday August 14th at the Jake Wolf
Hatchery with a tour starting at 10:00 and an IMA mtg following the tour. Tour
groups are limited to 15 folks, however if we have more than that wanting to
participate they will divide the group up. Sooooooo start coming up with the
number from your group and send me that number by August 1st and I’ll let the
folks at the Hatchery know of our numbers.

A special thank you to Shawnee Muskie Hunters, Lake Shelbyville Muskie Club,
Quad County and Fox River Valley for making it possible for us to okay ordering
the Airstones for the Hatchery.

In-Fisherman, Vol. 46/No. 4 July 2021 has an excellent article on the “Effects of
Introduced Muskies”. Reminds me of the pamphlet we once put out “What’s On
The Menu” which tried to address the same concerns in our Illinois stocked
Muskie lakes. I still have copies of that pamphlet and will have them available
free at our August meeting.

Special committee assignment: James Ozee has agreed to be chairman of the
publicity committee and IMA Historian.

IDNR REPORT – Shabbona Lake Muskie Research
“In 2020, IDNR Fisheries initiated research with the University of Illinois on a
project intended to better understand the factors responsible for catch rates of
muskies in Shabbona Lake. This project is a combination of field and laboratory
work, and involves both free swimming fishes in Shabbona Lake, as well as
hatchery-reared individuals from the Jake Wolf fish hatchery.
In the first year of the project, muskies from Shabgona Lake were captured by
IDNR biologists, and then implanted with a telemetry tag. To date, 36 muskies
dhave been tagged, 33 fish from within the lake and three rescued below the
spillway. These tags then emit a signal that is ‘heard’ by seven stationary
receivers around the lake (see receiver locations on the map), allowing for the
Shawnee Muskie Hunters Chapter of Muskies,Inc
Shawnee Muskie Hunters
  Chapter of Muskies,Inc
determination of movements, activity rates and habitat use over a full calendar
year. In addition, the tags were outfitted with a temperature sensor that can
reveal the thermal preferences of the fish. In this way, researchers can identify
space use, movement patterns, critical habitat needs, and activity levels that can
help ensure successful populations into the future.
In subsequent years, researchers will use hatchery-reared fish to identify why
muskies do, and do not, strike lures, and what that can mean for populations
over a longer term. There has been a great deal of research lately that has
shown that the likelihood of a fish striking a lure is related to factors such as food
resources, the ‘personality’ of the fish (e.g., is the fish ‘bold’ or is it ‘shy’), the
activity level of the fish (e.g., is it ‘active’ or is it ‘sedentary’), and learning (e.g.,
past experience with lures). Using a combination of laboratory trials and
experimental angling in ponds, researchers, will explore these concepts in an
effort to define the mechanism of lure striking in muskies.
The first trip to download data from the receivers will occur sometime in mind-
July and then by mid-or late-August data should be processed enough to provide
some preliminary information about summer movements and habitats used by
the muskie. When taken together, the different aspects of this study will combine
to help conserve ad protect muskellunge, as well as shed some light on why
10,000 casts are needed to encounter this impressive predator”
Note: above sent in by Michael MClelland, Chief of Fisheries. He adds – “Dr.
Cory Suski is heading up this research for us and we are looking forward to the
results to help continue to appropriately manage the muskie population at
Shabbona Lake.
