To Friends of Rosemary Dixon
When Rosemary was with us, she supported a young orphan boy, Harnsern,
living and being educated in the Cheryl’s Children’s Home in the slums of Nairo-
bi, an orphanage supported by the Sligo based charity Kenya Build. Now a
young man, he achieved entry to university before Rosemary lef t us. We are
determined to see him through his course, not just f or him, but also for Rose-
mary. The problem is – it is expensive! €3,000 per year which covers every-
thing, f ees, board, upkeep and lodging. With another t wo years to go, we need
all the help we can obtain. So any f inancial support you can give – our next pay-
ment is due in March- would be most welcome. If you would like to help, please
place your off ering in an envelope, with your name and phone number inside so
that your gift can be acknowledged and ‘Coral Knowles for Rosemary Dixon’
written on the f ront, and give it into the care of the Resource Centre f or him.

Page 5Sneem Walking Club Sneem Walking Club took their f irst walk of 2020 on Sunday 19th January. The walk was f rom Beale to Staigue Fort and back, approximately 12 kilometres, taking in some varied terrain and gradients. We set off in a heavy f rost which afforded clear skies and spectacular views across the mountains and Kenmare Bay. 15 members turned out f or the walk and we acquired a new member on the day, welcome to Colum O'Sullivan. Everyone agreed it was a superb walk and it cleared out some of the Christmas excesses! Thanks to everyone who turned out and to Michael Joe f or leading the walk. The next walk took place on Sunday 2nd February, this was due to be in the Valentia area weather permitting, but had to be changed due to the weather, so we did a 13 km walk (4 hours total) out past the Chemist in Sneem to Parknasil- la taking in a number of the board walks to various islands around Parknasilla with stunning views and varied terrain. 17 members turned out and thoroughly enjoyed the day. The next walk will be in 2 weeks time and hopef ully this time we can complete the Bolus Loop Walk at Ballinskelligs (which has been cancelled on 2 occasions due to the weather) - there will be 2 grades of walk that day. Pollinator Friendly Actions
To do thi s month: Think about planting a herb bed – these are
good for people but also a great source of food for pollinators. We
know that rosemary can be an important source of food for bees in
March. You can follow this up with a range of herbs that will f lower
and provide f ood f rom spring through to late summer. You can download a f lyer
f rom the pollinator.ie website giving details of suitable herbs.
https://www.pollinators.ie/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/AIPP -Herbs-
A5-Flyer-PRINT.pdf
To spot thi s m onth: Keep an eye out for large
bumblebee queens that have emerged f rom hiber-
nation. The most common bumblebee queens you
will spot this month is the White-tailed bumblebee
(Bombus lucorum). It has one band on the thorax,
one band on the abdomen and a white tail. The
White-tailed bumblebee has lemon yellow bands
and a clean white tail. Submit your sightings online
to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. You can
attach a photo if you’re not sure if you have the
correct identif ication

bumblebees
Pollinator Friendly Weedkiller
One of the best things you can do f or pollinators is to avoid spraying pesticides
and herbicides. Try this instead, making sure to apply it on a still dry day.
1 gallon white vinegar (€3.50 f rom Hallisseys in Kenmare)
A good squirt of washing up liquid
Half a cup of salt.
Spray directly onto the weeds only.
Please remember to let the dandelions bloom, they are an important food for
early bees.

Kenmare and District Gardening Club
The f irst meeting of 2020 was held in the usual place, the Gateway, Kenmare. We
welcomed Kevin Begley of Coolwater Garden, Co. Limerick who gave us an en-
tertaining talk entitled ‘Goodbye Lawn. Hello Pond’. He demonstrated how he
transf ormed his garden f rom a standard garden of large lawn and f ruit trees on
one side to a phenomenal ninety f oot natural looking pond – what an idea! In con-
trast, the f ront garden was formalised with crazy paving sandstone, hand laid on
earth, but interspersed with more water f eatures and colourf ul exotic planting
without the use of perennials. The talk followed the progression of endless inno-
vative ideas: pergolas, troughs of alpines (70 in all), exotic planting under glazing,
wooden structures – even a smokers’ canopy f rom a local pub! – many of the
items acquired through recycle , liquidation sales and f riendly Limerick f armers (!)
to be adapted to create a superb whole. The club cannot wait to pay a visit!
This was f ollowed by the A.G.M. Af ter reports by the treasurer and secret ary, the
new committee was elected. The hard work and dedication of those retiring was
appreciated by the club. The chairperson encouraged the members to open their
gardens and looked f orward to hearing suggestions for lectures. Stephen Austen
brief ly outlined the forthcoming annual trip, which this year will be to the south
east region. Members int erested in opening their gardens at the Bank Holiday
week end to create a local garden trail were asked to notify Neil Cahill.
The next meeting is at 7.30 p.m., Thursday, March 7th in the Gateway. Coffee
and welcome from 7.00p.m. The talk will be given by Neil Porteus, Head gar-
dener of the National Trust Property , Mount Stewart, Co. Down. He will talk about
Annesgrove Gardens, Castletownroche, whic h he has been renovating whilst they
were closed to the public and which the club will be visiting in June.

ing, and I have already had some very happy clients f rom the locality. If you would
like to take a look at my website you can find it at www.RosyBirths.com, though I
travel throughout Kerry and West Cork as a doula, Sneem is my hometown and I
would love to let people know what support there is f or them!
I am also holding a f ree workshop in Kenmare on February 15th on ways you can
have a positive birth experience.
