Program Notes Welcome back! We are so excited to be able to perform our annual Glory of Christmas concert for you in person again! In my 11 years as the Artistic Director of the Oregon Repertory Singers, it has been one of my greatest joys to focus on some of the best known music that is appropriate for the holiday season. In past years, we have featured the classics by Bruckner and Britten alongside modern masterworks by Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen and Ola Gjeilo. This year we are going to focus on an always-beloved genre that sometimes gets neglected in our more classical programs: the Christmas carol. We begin with possibly the greatest medley of old British carols, collected and arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1912. I especially wanted to program this piece so we could feature organist Jonas Nordwall, who is celebrating his 50th year as the organist at our musical home, Portland’s First United Methodist Church. He is one of Portland’s true musical treasures, and we are so lucky to have had him as a regular guest artist at our concerts for decades now. We also get to feature my friend and colleague, cellist Hamilton Cheifetz, another gem of Portland’s classical music scene. Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols begins quite literally at the beginning, with The Truth from Above, which is the “back-story” of Christmas— Adam and Eve being expelled from the Garden of Eden, which is why humanity needed a Messiah to begin with. It continues with The Somerset Carol and Sussex Carol in the choral parts: both are cheerful carols ringing in the season and even taking us all the way to New Year’s Eve. My favorite part of the Fantasia, however, is listening to the organ part quote several other more famous carols that never make it into the vocal lines. See how many you can catch! After Vaughan Williams, we bring you four carols by our favorite local composers, Naomi LaViolette and Stacey Philipps. We “premiered” Stacey’s arrangements of The Cherry Tree Carol and The Holly and the Ivy last year as virtual arrangements. We are all so excited to sing them together as a choir, instead of alone in our basements with our laptops. Naomi arranged her two carols especially for this concert, and they underscore her versatility as a composer: Let All Mortal Flesh dates back to the Middle Ages, while she wrote the lyrics and music for Night of Silence just last year. We are so blessed to have such talented composers and arrangers as part of our organization. We conclude this year’s Glory of Christmas with Mack Wilberg’s arrangement of - Come Ye Thankful People Come and Eriks Ešenvalds’ composition of Stars for choir and tuned wine glasses. Wilberg’s arrangement is truly bombastic—it was written for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and, as you might imagine, it makes full use of the power of the organ. We hope our 80 singers can produce the same power and majesty as their 300. Stars is a long-time favorite, and its intimacy contrasts beautifully with the Wilberg to send you off to your other holiday celebrations full of beauty and joy. Happy Holidays! We so hope to be able to continue making live music in 2022. Ethan Sperry, Artistic Director & Conductor 4 Oregon Repertory Singers | Glory of Christmas

I’m drawing near and I hear Even so, Lord, quickly come, Echoes of joy Bring Thy final harvest home; Gather Thou Thy people in, In this night of silence Free from sorrow, free from sin, My broken past is left behind There, forever purified, Dreams are born from ashes In Thy garner to abide; So beautiful as they rise Come, with all Thine angels come, Tears flow, walking through the snow Raise the glorious harvest home. And I know that I All the world is God’s own field, Am honored to be Fruit unto His praise to yield; Witness Wheat and tares together sown, Of so much majesty Unto joy or sorrow grown; First the blade, and then the ear, Then the full corn shall appear: Lord of harvest, grant that we Wholesome grain and pure may be. Support Your Singers Invest in what makes your heart sing! Loyal friends like you make it possible for Oregon Repertory Singers to provide extraordinary and meaningful concert experiences, and valuable music education opportunities for our singers, supporters, and community. This season, adapting our programming for both our adult and youth choir programs into a hybrid model has brought upon us great opportunity and expanded access. However, expenses of rehearsals and performances are combined with digital delivery and new COVID safety procedures, and that comes at a cost. This new model of operation emphasizes the challenge arts organizations like ours are faced with: doing more with less. Our adult and youth choir programs will survive because of your generous giving, program enrollment, concert patronage and enthusiastic support—a trifecta for success!
