ST. JOHN VIANNEY CHURCH 4097 18th Street, Bettendorf, Iowa 563.332.7910 ~ sjvbett.org Reverend Richard Adam, Pastor Daryl Fortin, Deacon SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 19, 2023
Pastor’s Perspective Lent begins this week! This begins a season that is so much like a retreat – an opportunity to look more closely at our relationship with God and the implications of our baptismal call to discipleship. Prayer, fasting, almsgiving: the three traditional marks of Lent, but also a time to nurture, enhance, or augment our spiritual lives. Noteworthy suggestions to seek out during this season include: Reconciliation! Adoration! Daily Mass! Paying it forward! Spiritual Reading! Spiritual media, such as EWTN, has many Lenten programs! Ash Wednesday Mass schedule: 9:00am, 4:30pm, 6:30pm One theme I would like to pursue through this Lenten season and while we are in the midst of Pope Francis’ Eucharistic Revival, is emphasis on the Eucharist: the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. SJV has been blessed to receive a multi-panel set of pictures and stories of authentic, medically approved, miraculous happenings of the Eucharist. Compiled by Blessed Carlo Acutis, a 14-year-old Italian youth who had a special devotion to the Eucharist. Carlo placed the Sacrament of the Eucharist at the heart of his own life, which he called “my highway to heaven.” After receiving his First Communion at age seven, Carlo did not miss daily attendance at Mass or reciting the rosary. The exhibition of these miracles has been viewed on five continents, in thousands of parishes, and at more than 100 universities. Our own exhibition will be on display in the gathering space through this Lenten season. (We are also sharing this exhibition with Our Lady of Lourdes and will rotate the three panels between the parishes.) I urge all of you to spend some time reading, reflecting, and praying as you view these miracles and gain a greater appreciation for this awesome gift that Christ has given us. In response to Pope Francis’ call for a “serious and dynamic liturgical formation” (Desiderio desideravi, 31), the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions (FDLC) is pleased to present a five-part Lenten series for an exploration of the Mass — “Eucharist: The Work of our Redemption.” It is offered in harmony with the United States Bishops’ campaign for a Eucharistic Revival, and includes some of the nation’s most respected theologians and liturgists. They will offer not merely an exploration of the elements of the Mass but will reflect on its rich theology and identify implications for pastoral practice. Dates and topics of these free webinars include: February 23: Celebration of the Paschal Mystery: Theological Foundations Register at: March 2: The Church at Prayer: The Introductory Rites fdlc.org/2022/12/eucharist-the-work- March 9: Proclamation and Response: The Liturgy of the Word of-our-redemption March 16: Joining in the Sacrifice: The Liturgy of the Eucharist March 23: Glorifying the Lord by Your Life: The Concluding Rite The word “Lent” is a word that means ‘springtime!’ Though we are still in the midst of February, it is nice to think about spring being just four weeks away … something I know that we are all looking forward to and are ready for. I hope you all have a great and wonderful week! ~Fr. Rich Joey loves Jesus

And every expectation placed in those things will be disappointed. And yet, how much time, how much effort and energy do we spend worrying and feeling sad because of these things, letting the tension towards home fade, losing sight of the meaning of the way, of the goal of the journey, the infinite towards which we go, the joy for which we breathe! Let us ask ourselves: do I live out what I say in the Creed, “I look forward” — that is — “to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come”? And how do I wait? Am I capable of going to the essential or am I distracted by so many superfluous things? Do I cultivate hope or go on complaining, because I give too much value to many things that don’t matter and that will pass?” ~ Pope Francis: Homily 11/22/22 ~ CORRECTION The promo code in last week’s bulletin for the Francis at 10 opportunity at St. Ambrose was misspelled. Question: Why do we place ashes on our forehead each Ash Wednesday? Answer: Ashes are rich in spiritual symbolism. We recall in the second chapter of Genesis, when the human person is fashioned “out of the dust of the ground” and receives the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). In death, a person returns to the ground from which we came. The ancient Hebrews used ashes as a sign of repentance, reminding themselves that God is God and we are not.

Lenten Study for Women We invite you to join a group of women on Monday nights as we study and pray through the book, Hope from the Cross, Reflections on Jesus’ Seven Last Words, by Cardinal Basil Hume. In each one of his reflections, Cardinal Hume unwraps a gift for us, one that gives us hope even when we are in the midst of pain and difficulty. We will meet at 6:00pm in the Vianney Room on all Mondays in Lent, except March 6. The cost is $8.00, payable to SJV. Please text or call Cheryl Olszewski (517.881.5858) to register. Don't be so judgmental! Why are Christians so intolerant? Why can't we just coexist? In an age in which preference has replaced morality, many people find it difficult to speak the truth, afraid of the reactions they will receive if they say something is right or wrong. Learn how Catholic morality is all about love, why making a judgment is not judging a person's soul, and why, in the words of Pope Francis, "relativism wounds people." Topics include: Real Freedom, Real Love, Sharing Truth with Compassion, and Why "I Disagree" Doesn't Mean "I Hate You.” We are not called to mediocrity, but greatness, and we cannot do it alone. We challenge you to join this FREE spring study, Saturdays, 7:00-8:30am, February 25-April 29, in the activity center. Contact Mitch Narvasa: pa@sjvbett.org.
