              Chairman’s Annual Report 2019

Cheshunt U3A, now in our ninth year, continues to be a vibrant organisation to
which so many members voluntarily give their time organising activities,
arranging meetings, and dealing with all the administration requirements to
make it run smoothly. Our membership numbers have remained at about the
same level as last year and at the end of October were 813.

New groups that have started up during this last year include, Card Making,
British Sign Language and Walking Netball. Also, due to demand, second
groups opened including Reading for Pleasure 2, Saturday Lunch 2 and another
Badminton and Table Tennis group. It is thanks to those members who take up
the mantle of Group Leader along with those who continue to run long standing
groups that we have increased interest in our activities. We hope in the coming
year that even more will be added. Along with these interests we have a Group
Sharing Agreement with several other local U3As that gives members the
opportunity to enjoy activities not usually available to them.

Our monthly talks continue to give interesting insight on a variety of subjects
such as Wildlife Photography, Agatha Christie and bugging the German
Generals at Trent Park. We are very aware that sound reproduction at the main
meetings has not been as we would like and so we have invested in a new set of
speakers. Along with continued assistance from Niki, the sound manager from
the Spotlight, we hope this will bring an improvement at future meetings.

As a committee we feel it is important to maintain links with other local
organisations so at the monthly meetings, along with the regular interest and
group tables, we offer local community groups the opportunity to highlight their
activities. These have included Cheshunt Fire Service, LV Health Federation,
Cheshunt Bowls and Friends of Cedars Park. As well as providing information
for our members it also makes others aware of what we do and the interests we
have.
Nationally there are 1046 U3As with a total in excess of 439,000 members.
Each U3A is a mutual aid organisation, operationally independent but a member
of the Third Age Trust, which requires adherence to the guiding principles of
the U3A movement. As this organisation continues to grow the National Board
of Directors have taken steps to raise the U3A profile. On the 3 rd June 2020
there will be the first National U3A Day with many U3As around the country
organising many different activities.

As a charity we are also obliged to meet the requirements of the Charity
Commission. This year we have put in place a Safeguarding Policy and Jacqui
Fry volunteered to join the committee as our Safeguarding Representative.

Stepping forward to take on this role typifies the approach from all of those
serving on your committee and I thank them for the unseen work they take on
throughout the year to make this organisation run as smoothly as it does.

Along with the committee I would also like to thank the Group Leaders who do
such a good job in organising the activities so much enjoyed by the members.

Throughout the year we are grateful for the support we receive from the staff
here at the Laura Trott centre and the sound engineers from the Spotlight.

And finally, every member plays a part in making this a pleasant and vibrant
organisation to be part of. It is run by the members for the members and I
believe that this collective spirit will ensure Cheshunt U3A continues to be a
place people want to come to enjoy activities, make friends and help make it fun
for everyone.

Our trip this month was to the Optometrist Museum. The museum was founded
in 1901 by John Harmer Sutcliffe OBE, the first secretary of the British Optical
Association. The museum has collected continually since then and has over
28,000 objects on display and items in the archive. First opened to the public in
1914 the museum has been owned and managed by the College of Optometrists
since 1980 and moved to its current location near Charing Cross Station in
1997. In 1998 the first professional curator was appointed and he gave the group
an amusing and interesting tour of the display rooms, explaining the history of
opticians, optometry and ophthalmology and telling us about the many rare and
unique items on display including an important contact lens collection and
spectacles from the earliest designs to current trends. Also the Queen Mother’s
spectacles, the specially made spectacles for Daniel Radcliffe playing Harry
Potter and a false eye for an alien character in a Star Wars film, however the
character sadly ended on the cutting room floor and didn’t make it into the film.

MORNING WALKS Rob SCOTT 01992 445288

Our 2nd walk of 2020 will be on Tuesday 4th February, from The Plume of
Feathers, 57 Upper Green, Tewin, AL6 0LX or Grid Ref: TL271153. It will be a
circular walk of about 6.25 miles taking us through beautiful woodlands and
open countryside with lots of lovely views in this undulating part of the county.
We will pass St Peters church, which was built on the site of a Saxon shrine
dating back to 449, walk beside the River Mimram, through Tewin Bury Farm
Hotel, Burnham Green and Bulls Green, before turning south back to our
starting point. A good way to the start is to go through Hertford on the A414, go
under the railway bridge, across the first small roundabout to the next
roundabout, where take the third exit, up Thieves Lane to take the first exit at
the next roundabout on to the B1000. After about a mile bear right at the sign
for Tewin to go through Tewin Lower Green, again bearing right for Upper
Green. The pub is on the right, but if you don't propose to have lunch, please
park in the car park opposite. The pub will be open by 9.45am to pre-order
lunch.

Wow, what a surprise for the January walk, with 21 members out and 20
staying for lunch at the Robin Hood and Little John at Rabley Heath. Frank led
us from start to finish, without making one mistake - I'll have to find out what
his knack is. The weather was very kind to us and the mud wasn't too bad
especially with all the rain we've had lately. Plus we saw some water towers!

Any problems in getting to the start, please call my mobile: 07594427190.

What To Do In A Medical Emergency....could you handle it? I am willing to
do another 2hr talk if there is enough interest. It would be on a Monday morning
mid Feb and last about 2hrs . This is not a first aid course, but draws on my
experience as a NHS Paramedic .
If interested please see me at the information table or phone 07594475051 or
email stewart.wagstaff@sky.com. I can take up to 20 members and need a
minimum of 14. The session is free!

Do you walk, or cycle etc in 'off the beaten track' places, where , in case of
emergency, you could not give a definite location? If so consider putting the
app on your phone What3Words , recommended by emergency services.
