Prayers for the Morning

The Minister shall read aloud these Sentences of the Scriptures that
follow.
O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: let the whole earth stand in
awe of him. Psalm 96:9

Let your countenance shine upon your servant and teach me your
statutes. Psalm 119.135

1st Hymn #8 (Common Praise - Canada)
Awake, my soul, and with the sun
thy daily stage of duty run;
shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise
to pay thy morning sacrifice.

Redeem thy misspent time that's past,
and live this day as if thy last;
improve thy talent with due care;
for the great day thyself prepare.

Let all thy converse be sincere,
thy conscience as the noonday clear;
think how all-seeing God thy ways
and all thy secret thoughts surveys.

Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart,
and with the angels bear thy part,
who all night long unwearied sing
glory to the eternal King.

The Minister, turning to the people, shall say the Exhortation.
DEARLY beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty
God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we
have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his
holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things
that are necessary for our life and our salvation.
And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him,
let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our
sins, that we may obtain forgiveness of the same by his infinite goodness
and mercy.

A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation with the
Minister.
Merciful God, you have called us to live lives worthy of the calling to
which we have been called. But we confess to you and each other that
we have not always spoken the truth in love; we have not always made
every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Forgive us and, by your grace, help us to grow in every way into him
who is our head, Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest
alone.
The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of
all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and
consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Minister. O Lord, open thou our lips;
People. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

Minister. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised;
People. There is no end of his greatness.

Minister. One generation shall praise your works to another
People. And shall declare your love.

Minister. All your works praise you, O Lord,
People. And your faithful servants bless you.

Minister. They make known the glory of your kingdom
People. And speak of your love.

Minister. My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord;
People. Let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.

                              Canticle
                  VENITE, EXULTEMUS DOMINO.
                            Said together.

                   O COME, let us sing unto the Lord:
          let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.

           Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving,
              and show ourselves glad in him with psalms.
                      For the Lord is a great God,
                    and a great King above all gods.

               In his hand are all the corners of the earth:
                 and the strength of the hills is his also.

                     The sea is his, and he made it:
                  and his hands prepared the dry land.

                O COME, let us worship, and fall down,
                 and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is the Lord our God;
                 and we are the people of his pasture,
                      and the sheep of his hand.

                      GLORY be to the Father,
                            and to the Son,
                       and to the Holy Spirit;
                      As it was in the beginning,
                      Is now, and ever shall be,
                          world without end.
                                 Amen.

                             PSALM 125
                             said together.

         Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
            which cannot be moved, but abides forever.

               As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
                so the LORD surrounds his people,
                from this time on and forevermore.

For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the
                              righteous,
 so that the righteous might not stretch out their hands to do wrong.

              Do good, O LORD, to those who are good,
             and to those who are upright in their hearts.

But those who turn aside to their own crooked ways the LORD will
                    lead away with evildoers.
Peace be upon Israel!

                                    GLORY be to the Father,
                                          and to the Son,
                                     and to the Holy Spirit;
                                    As it was in the beginning,
                                    Is now, and ever shall be,
                                        world without end.
                                               Amen.

                                           said together

                            Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
                         he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour,
             born of the house of his servant David.

         Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
           that he would save us from our enemies,
              from the hands of all who hate us.

           He promised to show mercy to our fathers
             and to remember his holy covenant.

       This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,
          to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
                 free to worship him without fear,
      holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

  You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
      for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
           to give his people knowledge of salvation
                by the forgiveness of their sins.

              In the tender compassion of our God
           the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
           and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

                    GLORY be to the Father,
                          and to the Son,
                     and to the Holy Spirit;

         2nd Hymn #306 (Common Praise – Canada)

         O for a thousand tongues to sing
         my dear Redeemer's praise,
         the glories of my God and King,
         the triumphs of his grace.

         Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
         that bids our sorrows cease;
         'tis music in the sinner's ears,
         'tis life, and health, and peace.

         He speaks, and, listening to his voice,
         new life the dead receive,
         the mournful broken hearts rejoice,
         the humble poor believe.

         Hear him, ye deaf, ye voiceless ones,
         your loosened tongues employ;
ye blind, behold your Saviour come,
          and leap, ye lame, for joy!

          My gracious Master and my God,
          assist me to proclaim,
          to spread through all the earth abroad
          the honours of thy name.

Minister. The Lord be with you;
People. And with thy spirit.
Minister. Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us.
People. Christ, have mercy upon us.
Minister. Lord, have mercy upon us.

                                    All
                    OUR Father who art in heaven,
                         Hallowed be thy Name,
                Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,
                        on earth as it is in heaven.
                   Give us this day our daily bread;
                     And forgive us our trespasses,
              As we forgive them that trespass against us;
                   And lead us not into temptation,
                         But deliver us from evil.
          For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
                        For ever and ever. Amen.

Then the Priest standing up shall say:
O Lord, show thy mercy upon us;
People. And grant us thy salvation.

Priest. O Lord, save the Queen;
People. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.

Priest. Endue thy Ministers with righteousness;
People. And make thy chosen people joyful.

Priest. O Lord, save thy people;
People. And bless thine inheritance.

Priest. Give peace in our time, O Lord;
People. And evermore mightily defend us.

Priest. O God, make clean our hearts within us;
People. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

THE COLLECT.
STIR UP, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people, that richly bearing the
fruit of good works, we may by you be richly rewarded; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Second Collect, for Justice.
BLESSED PRESENCE, who created us in your own image: Grant us
grace fearlessly to contend against evil and to make no peace with
oppression; and, that we may reverently use our freedom, help us to
employ it in the maintenance of justice in our communities and among
the nations, to the glory of your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and for ever. Amen.

The Third Collect, for Reconciliation.
HOLY ONE, creator of all that is, seen and unseen, of story and of song,
of heartbeat and of tears of bodies, souls, voices, and all relations: you are
the God of all truth and the way of all reconciliation. Uphold with your
love and compassion all who open their lives in the sacred sharing of their
stories, breathe in us the grace to trust in your loving forgiveness, that we
may face our histories with courage; touch us through the holy gift of
story that those who speak and those who listen may behold your own
redeeming presence; guide us with holy wisdom to enter through the
gates of remorse that our feet may walk gently and firmly on the way of
justice and healing. Amen.

The Summary of the Law.
OUR LORD Jesus Christ said: hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one
Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with
all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the
first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: thou shalt
love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the
law and the prophets.
People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write both these thy laws in our
        hearts, we beseech thee.

Reflection

Intercessions

A General Thanksgiving, to be said by the Minister and people together
ALMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, We your servants do give you
most humble and heartfelt thanks For all your goodness and loving
kindness to us and to all people: We bless you for our creation,
preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your in-
estimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And we beseech you,
give us that due sense of all your mercies, that our hearts may be
unfeignedly thankful, and that we show forth your praise, not only with
our lips, but in our lives; by giving up ourselves to your service, and by
walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all
honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom.
ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to
make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise that when
two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their
requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as
may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of
thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

                                    Poem
                                   The Poor
                     Roberto Sosa translated by Spencer Reece
                             Read by Mark Gallop

The poor are many
and so—
impossible to forget.

No doubt,
as day breaks,
they see the buildings
where they wish
they could live with their children.

They
can steady the coffin
of a constellation on their shoulders.
They can wreck
the air like furious birds,
blocking out the sun.

But not knowing these gifts,
they enter and exit through mirrors of blood,
walking and dying slowly.

And so,
one cannot forget them.

Acclamation
Minister. Come to me and listen to my words;
          hear me, and you shall have life.
People.   Come to me and listen to my words;
           hear me, and you shall have life.

Minister. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
          the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the
          simple.
People. Hear me, and you shall have life.

Minister. The statutes of the Lord are right and rejoice the heart;
          the commandment of the Lord is pure and gives light to the
          eyes.
People. Hear me, and you shall have life.

Minister. The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever;
the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
People. Hear me, and you shall have life.

Minister. More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine
          gold; sweeter also than honey dripping from the honeycomb.
People.   Come to me and listen to my words;
           hear me, and you shall have life.

Blessing
Minister. The Lord bless you and keep you:
People.   Amen

Minister. The Lord make his face to shine upon you,
          and be gracious to you:
People.   Amen.

Minister. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you
          and give you peace:
People.   Amen.

Minister. The Lord God almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
          guard you, save you, and bring you to that heavenly city, where
          he lives and reigns for ever and ever.
People.   Amen.

Concluding Hymn #397 (Common Praise - Canada)

Praise the one who break the darkness
with a liberating light.
Praise the one who frees the prisoners,
turning blindness into sight.
Praise the one who preached the gospel,
healing every dread disease,
calming storms and feeding thousands
with the very bread of peace.

Praise the one who blessed the children
with a strong yet gentle word.
Praise the one who drove out demons
with a piercing two-edged sword.
Praise the one who brings cool water
to the desert's burning sand.
From this well comes living water,
quenching thirst in every land.

Praise the one true love incarnate:
Christ who suffered in our place.
Jesus died and rose for many
that we may know God by grace.
Let us sing for joy and gladness,
seeing what our God has done.
Praise the one redeeming glory,
praise the One who makes us one.

Dismissal
Minister. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord
People.   Thanks be to God.
