follow.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to
bring good tidings to the afflicted Isaiah 61:1

Third Sunday of Advent - the Candle of Joy
The Minister: Last Sunday the candle of peace was lit. We light it and the
candle of hope again as we remember that Christ will come again and
bring to the world everlasting peace.
The Candles of Hope and Peace are lit
The third candle of Advent is the Candle of Joy. It reminds us of the joy
that Mary felt when the angel Gabriel told her that a special child would
be born to her - a child who would save and deliver his people.
God wants us all to have joy. The angel who announced to the shepherds
that Jesus had been born told them: "Do not be afraid. I am bringing you
good news of a great joy for all people - for to you is born this day, in the
City of David, a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord."
We light this candle to remember that Christ brings the promise of a new
life - a life in which the blind receive sight, the lame walk, and the
prisoners are set free. We light it to remember that He is the bringer of
true and everlasting joy.
The third candle - The Candle of Joy is lit
The Minister, turning to the people, shall say the Exhortation.
DEARLY beloved, the Scripture moves us in sundry places to
acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we
should not dissemble nor cloke them before the face of Almighty God
our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent,
and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the
same, by his infinite goodness and mercy.
And although we ought at all times humbly to acknowledge our sins
before God; yet ought we most chiefly so to do, when we assemble andmeet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have
received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most
holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as
well for the body as the soul.
Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to
accompany me with a pure heart and humble voice unto the throne of the
heavenly grace.
A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation with the
Minister.
Merciful God, you have called us to live lives worthy of the calling to
which we have been called. But we confess to you and each other that
we have not always spoken the truth in love; we have not always made
every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Forgive us and, by your grace, help us to grow in every way into him
who is our head, Jesus Christ. Amen.
The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest alone.
The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution of all your sins,
true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of the
Holy Spirit. Amen.

Thirst
Mary Oliver
Another morning and I wake with thirst
for the goodness I do not have. I walk
out to the pond and all the way God has
given us such beautiful lessons. Oh Lord,
I was never a quick scholar but sulked
and hunched over my books past the hour
and the bell; grant me, in your mercy,
a little more time. Love for the earth
and love for you are having such a long
conversation in my heart. Who knows what
will finally happen or where I will be sent,
yet already I have given a great many things
away, expecting to be told to pack nothing,
except the prayers which, with this thirst,
I am slowy learning.
The Grace
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the
fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.

“Healey Willan, in this early dramatic and passionate Prelude, belies the
influence of Brahms and Wagner in his writing. Considered ‘Dean of
Canadian Church Music’, he set a high choral standard when he began
working in 1921 at the Anglo Catholic parish of St. Mary Magdalene in
Toronto. He is fondly remembered for his famous quote: “British by birth,
Canadian by adoption, Irish by extraction and Scotch by absorption.””St. Matthias’ Church
