St Paul’s Catholic School
Thursday 11th June, 2020
Vision: At St Paul’s we know, love and serve God.
Mission: To provide a collaborative, holistic learning environment founded
on Catholic ideals.
Kia ora koutou, I hope you’ve had a great week and you’re enjoying our next new normal,
Level 1. Thank you everyone for the understanding you’ve shown while we’ve navigated these
unprecedented times. Ka mau te wehi! Following is some mahi the school has been doing to
support behaviour management. Thank you for this Mrs Beardshaw.
Introducing our Peer Mediators for 2020.
Did you know we have Peer Mediators working during lunchtime to help our school be a
peaceful, happy place?
The Cool Schools Peer Mediation Programme teaches students and teachers how to use
conflict scenarios as an opportunity to build positive relationships with others. Non-violent,
constructive, co-operative, WIN/WIN solutions to a problem are negotiated. Agreements are
made which are mutually acceptable to all parties concerned. When implemented as a whole
school programme, it has a positive impact not only on students, teachers and parents but also
for the wider school community.
The job of the peer mediator is to:
- Ask you to talk about your problem and help you come up with a solution
- Act as a go-between for the people who have a problem
- Will listen carefully without blaming
- Will help you focus on how to move on from your problem
- Not judge
Encourage your children to use the peer mediators at lunchtime. They are providing a service
for other students as "peace-keepers". They are modelling skills and processes, which will last
a lifetime and are readily transferable to the home, workplace, community and beyond.
May the blessings of the risen Lord be with you. Shaun EmmsThe Body and Blood of Christ
This Sunday, we celebrate a second solemnity during this period of Ordinary Time
in the Liturgical calendar the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of
Christ. This day was once called Corpus Christi, which is Latin for “Body of
Christ.”
Our faith teaches us that, when we gather to celebrate Mass, Jesus is present to us.
The bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ. This is what we
mean by the word transubstantiation: Jesus makes himself present to all who re-
ceive the Body and Blood of Christ.
If there are children in your family who have already celebrated their First Holy
Communion, invite them to share their memories of this special day. If there are
family photos taken on this occasion, bring them out and share them together.
Adults in the family may also share memories or photos that they have of their
First Communion, ttogether today’s Gospel, John 6:51–58. Reflect together on
what Jesus means when he calls himself the “living bread.” Recall that every time
we receive the Eucharist, Jesus keeps the promise he made in today’s Gospel—
those who eat his flesh and drink his blood will remain forever connected to him.
Perhaps family members can share what it means for them to receive Jesus in the
Eucharist. Together thank God for this gift of Holy Communion.
Pray together the Lord’s Prayer or today’s Psalm.

First Day of School
I am feeling anxious for my first day at school especially because I am at a new
school. Wow the design is so much different to my old school. I think my
preparation is good but I don't know if my mum made the right decision sending
me here. I have a growth mindset so I think I will be all good. Ok I am walking in
the school gates. It is very fortunate and necessary. "Oh no" they speak a
different language to me. I hope I find an encyclopaedia because they are my
favourite type of book.
HEADLICE IS BACK– Please read this
We have had quite a few cases of head lice in the school. This is the time of year to be very vigilant with checking your child/
ren for signs of head lice. We are asking that all parents examine their child’s hair and look for the following signs:
• Persistent scratching, particularly behind the ears and nape of the neck accompanied by a red rash.
• Tiny silver white eggs at the base of the hair shaft.
• Small pale brown lice. You may wish to use a magnifying glass and a fine tooth comb under strong light to help identify
lice.
• In severe cases, left untreated, there may be swelling of the lymph glands in the neck or under the arms. There may also be
slight fever or muscular aches.
Head Lice can be treated quickly and effectively by following these steps.
1. Purchase a specialist head lice treatment and apply it according to the directions on the pack.
2. Examine all family members’ hair, and treat everyone found to have head lice at the same time.
3. Wash out the treatment and use a fine tooth comb to remove the dead lice and eggs.
4. Repeat treatment in 7-10 days if lice are still present or eggs are found within 1cm of the scalp.
5. RE-CHECK ALL FAMILY MEMBERS ON A DAILY BASIS UNTIL NO SIGNS OF HEAD-
LICE ARE PRESENT.
. If you require assistance or advise in treating headlice, you can contact
the Public Health Nurse. It’s School Holiday Time!!
