EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Family, “A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thorn bushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles. A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:43-45 The Gospel reading from Luke contains three parables - the first has to do with blindness, the second mentions a splinter in your brother’s eye, and the third is about trees bearing fruit. These three parables make the same point about the importance of the disciples living a good life by following the teaching of Jesus. In the same way, we should center our attention on living as Jesus has taught us. We should not stand in judgment of others, instead we should strive to make decisions in our lives based on the example Jesus gave us. We should focus on making improvements within our own selves and not look to find flaws in others. If we want to be ‘a good tree that does not bear rotten fruit’, we need to live a holy life - a life centered in Christ. Praying, going to Mass, and celebrating the sacraments, helps us grow and nourish ourselves and our faith. As our own faith is nourished, we can go forth and bear good fruit and make a holy and positive difference in the world. For Irene Han, Juliana Meh, Charlotte Pray, and Ethyn Say, who were baptized last weekend. May their new life in Christ help them to grow ever more in wisdom, age, and grace. Ash Wednesday, March 2, Masses: 6:45 a.m., 8:15 a.m. (school mass), noon, 6:00 p.m. With the celebration of Ash Wednesday, we enter into the season of Lent: a time of conversion, a time set aside by the Church for retrospection, repentance and return to the Lord. As of now there are only two obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics in the Church ie. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. And Fridays of Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat One Full meal as well as two small meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. I encourage you to follow the guidelines of USCCB for the days of fasting and abstinence. However, if you are under medication and are with Health concerns, even those bound by the above norms may be exempted. May the Lord Bless you with all the graces needed for the upcoming season of Lent. Beth, our Pastoral Associate, will be retiring at the end of this month. She has touched the lives of many of you through her ministries including nursing home and communion services, hospital visits, homebound visits, senior adult ministries, Christ Renews His Parish, Just Faith, bereavement ministry, El Salvador outreach, Burmese mentoring, and social outreach programs to mention a few. We are extremely grateful for all the services that she has rendered to our parish. I invite you all to join us in giving her a fitting farewell at all masses on March 5 and 6. May God bless her and her future ministries and plans. Love, Fr. Francis “Save the Date” Fr.
