STUDENT HANDBOOK SEASON 9 | 2021-2022 The Happening Dance Company
ABOUT THE HAPPENING DANCE COMPANY

Directed by Kimberly Stevenson, The Happening Dance Company is a dynamic dance studio in Vancouver that
celebrates all bodies and all individuals, while creating first-rate dancers. The Happening enters its ninth season
in September 2021, and has seen tremendous growth in the past few years. Our studio welcomes hundreds
of dancers between the ages of 3-17 through our Fraser Street doors 7-days a week, in the genres of hip
hop, contemporary, ballet, jazz, breakdance, tap, and now acro. Each January we host Accelerate, a ticketed
contemporary dance show that has our competitive students dance alongside professional contemporary dance
artists in our community.

COMMUNICATION & NEWS

Important updates about The Happening classes, upcoming events, competitions, and activities are provided in
our bi-weekly newsletter. Newsletters are sent via email, and available on the Client Portal. If you have a teen
dancer with an email address, we welcome them to be placed on the list to receive the newsletter. You can add
them in your Client Account, or ask us to add them on our end.

Newsletters can often be lengthy when it comes to recital time, as we have so much information to
communicate. For that reason, we have a system of Class Parent Reps who communicate class-specific
information out to their dancers class via email. We also have a large chalkboard and whiteboard in the studio
with the “Next Important Date,” and our year-long calendar is printed and hung in two places in the studio as
well as posted on the website (Tab: “Events”).

We ask that all families follow The Happening Dance Studio on Instagram @happeningdance to stay informed
about news, awards, studio life, and new merchandise. This is a place we share time sensitive information, as
well as giveaways and contests.

CLIENT PORTAL

The Happening Client Portal is where you can register and confirm enrollment in classes and events, update
contact information, view fees and make payments, and see updates and review past communications.
The Client Portal is a good way to stay up to date with The Happening community. Access to the portal is
through our website by clicking on the Client Portal Login button.

dancers only who have more than one class in a day, with a break in-between. Plexiglass barriers have
been built on the table to provide barriers for dancers as they await their session. The long table is
for students doing homework, reading, listening to music through headphones etc. We would really
appreciate the long table not to be used for students on social media on their phones, they can do
those things at another time and space.

» If your dancer is able to (and the weather allows), we would appreciate them leaving the studio between
their session (go for a walk, get picked-up, etc.) and return for their next session.

» Washrooms are for staff/dancers only. There is a clearly-marked path to each washroom that exists
outside of the 3m space allotted for each dancer in each class.

» The Happening cannot be held responsible for students before or after class time.

» Students need to be dressed as outlined in the clothing and grooming guidelines on page 13, and hair
should be tied back. No hair in student’s faces, including bangs, including boys.

» No jeans, jean shorts, crop tops, or restrictive pants.

» No gum, food, or drinks during class. Water breaks will be permitted at the discretion of the dance instructor.

                                                                 THEHAPPENINGDANCE.COM 11
» P
arents/guardians are not permitted to sit in on their children’s classes; opportunity to watch will be
provided at some point in the season.
» No foul language. This includes foul language on T-shirts/clothing worn in the studio.
» A
ll staff, students, and their families are entitled to a safe and respectful environment while at The
  Happening.
» It is important to The Happening to resolve any conflicts or disputes through respectful forms of
communication. If a conflict arises we ask that you wait 24 hours until you send your email addressing the
issue. If The Happening staff receive written or verbal communication that is disrespectful or demeaning,
the family will be asked to leave The Happening Dance Company. A refund will not be issued.

                                  ATTENDANCE & CLASS ABSENCES

» Attendance is taken at the start of each class. You need to let us know if your child will not be in class at
least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled class. Any absences, planned tardiness, or extended leaves, such
as vacations need to be notified.

» New this season, you will get three unexplained absences and then we will be following up with a phone
call and a warning. The next unexplained absence you will be removed from the class and the refund
process will follow the dates and percentages found on page 10.

» Regular Tardiness for class will not be tolerated as it is such a disruption to the class and to the instructor.
Students need to be on time and prepared for class! Students need to be 5 minutes early for class and
prepared mentally and physically for their session.

» Email notification of absences is preferred: info@thehappeningdance.com

» If a student misses a week of class, it’s important to arrive early the following week. Kindly ask a fellow
classmate to show what was missed and, if time permits, teach what was learned. The expectation is that
students have an idea of what was missed, especially if there was a lengthy absence.

» Excessive absences (even 1x/month) have significant impacts on the teacher, the class, and the absent
student. Regardless of the circumstance, absences will limit a student’s participation in the year-end
recital choreography and could have an impact on them moving up to the next level.

                                 CLOTHING & GROOMING GUIDELINES
Clothing and grooming guidelines are coming from a variety of brands that provide outstanding performance
wear. Students are required to wear appropriate attire for ALL dance classes. Please, no clothing with offensive
phrases/graphics or that is inappropriately revealing and absolutely no baggy sweatpants/sweatshirts for tap/
jazz/contemporary/ballet.

These items listed below are the first choice for all classes and instructors, however, if you would prefer an
alternate choice, especially for older students, dancers must be in all black and be wearing form fitting clothes.
For tap/jazz/ballet/contemporary, dancers may wear black tank- top/black leggings, or wear a form fitting black
long sleeved shirt and black leggings, and form fitting athletic pants or black form fitting shorts. First choice is
the dress code below, and the second choice is all black form-fitting attire to see the lines and alignment of the
body. If the dress code is not being followed we will be following up with you, as this is one of our “Promises to
Us” statements that you signed off on.

All of these shoes/bodysuits/tights can be found at THE DANCE SHOP (1089 West Broadway.) The DANCE
SHOP will be familiar with your needs for The Happening and their customer service is outstanding. They have
this list on file. A discounted rate of 10% will apply when you are purchasing the required clothing/tights/shoes
recommended there.
Note that these guidelines are for dancers who identify as “girls” and “boys.” If your dancer
has other needs, please let us know, and we will tell their instructor, so there are no
questions asked. We ask that your dancer choose an option that suits them!

                                SHOWCASE & COMPETITION SEASON

SHOWCASE

Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Showcase are audition-based groups that will be held on Thursdays and Fridays
for the 2021/22 season. The only weekend that Showcase takes off is May long weekend, no other holiday
weekends.

Showcase needs to be a strong commitment from your child as well as yourself as a parent/guardian. We
need parents to be involved at home with child to work on choreography/cleaning notes/viewing videos
together. Parents have to have a strong commitment to this as well, especially for the younger groups. Greater
expectations are placed on Showcase students in terms of time commitment (inside and outside of the studio),
superior leadership qualities, an increased desire to perform and work on a strong performance quality. Students
are expected to practice regularly at home and to work on new material throughout the week and to remember
ALL cleaning notes from week to week. Showcase will cover more material than regular classes, and this level of
commitment is essential for the group’s success.
» Showcase will participate in two-three competitions this spring that are typically held during school hours.
» Showcase will participate in other special projects, and have extra opportunities to perform.

Auditions will be held on Thursday September 23 4:00 PM-9:00 PM.
In order to audition, Junior Showcase dancers must be enrolled in a jazz technique class and those interested
in Intermediate or Senior Showcase must be enrolled in a technique class (Jazz or Ballet) and in a Hip Hop class
as well. Contemporary is strongly recommended for Intermediate and Senior Showcase members. There is no
guarantee that everyone who auditions will join Showcase.

Junior: Ages 6-12
Students need the ability to pick up choreography quickly and an eagerness to learn and perform. Performance
is huge! We will be focusing on a lyrical number, hip hop number and a musical theatre number. This creates a
space for the younger dancers that we have at this studio that want a little more expectation and push!

Parents, you need to be prepared to be more involved if your child is in this group. You need to work with them
in the week and make sure they are viewing choreography videos that have been sent out as well as working
with them on cleaning notes and new choreography.
Fee: $1400 (not including competition fee and costume)

Intermediate: Ages 10 & up
A group that is experienced and skilled in jazz/contemporary, musical theatre and hip hop. A group that is
extremely fast at picking up choreography, retaining cleaning notes from week to week, and an extreme desire to
work hard in all classes during the week, especially in Showcase! There needs to be a desire to excel and to create a
positive working environment in and out of the studio. The working demand for this group will be very high!
Fee: $1700 (not including competition fee and costume)

                                      THEHAPPENINGDANCE.COM 15
Senior: Ages 12 & up
A group that will be held to a high standard and responsibility of leadership inside and outside of the studio. A
group that desires to uphold all of The Happening’s Core Values in and out of the studio! A group that works
diligently in every class and continues to set the bar higher for work ethic, attitude, and skill. A group that has a
very strong desire to improve and excel as a technician and as a performer. A group that practices continually
all week and does not need reminders for warm up, behaviour in a work space, and for work ethic! A group that
wants to work!!!!
Fee: $2200 (not including competition fee and costume)

Several factors are taken into consideration in the selection process. A student must:
» Take and apply constructive feedback quickly
» Demonstrate the ability to push performance quality
» Show eagerness to learn and a drive for continued improvement (practice, practice, practice!)
» Display a positive attitude in the rehearsal space by encouraging others with actions and words
» Practice consistently throughout the week in order to build dance technique and strengthen choreography
» Exhibit leadership qualities; students are expected to set an example (arrive early, ensure their dance bag
has all necessities, prepare mentally and physically, exhibit respect for the instructor through listening and
responding to direction) during regular classes as well as Showcase.
» Have the ability to manage time efficiently in the rehearsal space

Breakdown of costs:

» Competition fee is $250 + GST per student
» Costume fee is $300 + GST per student
» Senior Showcase class fee is $2200 + GST per student
» Intermediate Showcase class fee is $1700 + GST per student
» Junior Showcase class fee is $1400 + GST per student
» In addition: Showcase Jacket (ADIDAS or Lululemon): $100 per student (for new Showcase members)
» Once the student has accepted a position in Showcase, payments for showcase tuition, costume fees
and competition fees are collected. Payments can be made as a lump sum or distributed into 3 equal
instalments (jacket purchase additional), charged on October 1, January 1 and April 1.

SHOWCASE & COMPETITION SEASON

COMPETITIVE TAP TEAM: SELECTED SUNDAYS 3:00-5:00 PM

$1000 +GST + $100 COSTUME FEE +$250 COMPETITION FEE

New for this 2021/2022 Season we are developing a Competitive Tap Team led by the amazing Jen Morris and
assisted by Kimberly Stevenson. Depending on Interest we will determine if we need a Junior/Senior Team.
We will create a schedule once we determine the teams for the season and determine what Sundays will
be scheduled- there will be a minimum of 15 Sundays selected. Please look at all of the factors required for
Showcase as they all apply to this Competitive Tap Team.

THE SOLO/DUET/TRIO/SMALL GROUP PROGRAM

THE HAPPENING offers the opportunity for students to do solos, duets, trios, or small groups for competition
season. These can be any style: hip hop, tap, contemporary, musical theatre, jazz, lyrical, or ballet.
Scheduling and the choreography itself will be influenced by the instructor’s availability, and the technical skills
within the group. Please see Showcase requirements, as all of them apply for solos, duets, trios, and small groups
as well. Three competitions will be attended in the spring.

In order to ensure readiness for the first competition, students are required to organize additional, independent
rehearsals outside of studio/choreography time. If a student is not properly prepared by the first competition
date, the instructor reserves the right to pull them from the competition; competition fees will be forfeited.
The cost of the solo, duet, or trio program includes 8 hours of teacher instruction that covers choreography,
routine cleaning and polishing. Costumes and competition fees are not included, and will be charged as a
reimbursement for expenditures paid by The Happening. There is a 24-hour rehearsal cancellation requirement
for rescheduling, after which missed sessions will not be rebooked.

Breakdown of costs:
 » Solo: $700 + GST
 » Duet: $450 + GST per dancer
 » Trio: $420 + GST per dancer
» Quartet or Quintet: $350 + GST per dancer

CLASS REPRESENTATIVES
The Class Rep will be a liaison between their respective dance class and the studio staff. This individual will have
access to contact information for the entire class, and will get to know the other parents and students. Class
Reps will be available to other parents to answer questions, and provide answers or sources for answers (ie: the
website, a specific newsletter, or the handbook). Ideally, Class Reps will be available to help during the Year-End
Show weekend, and will be responsible for informing the class of things like changes to class schedules and/
or costume details as well as getting out choreography videos during recital preparation, so everyone can be
practicing during the week.

BALLET & ACRO
Students will be introduced to the foundational elements and technique of ballet through music, movement, and
stories while developing the strength and flexibility to be introduced to acrodance. They will be learning the very
basics of tumbling.

INTRO TO ACRO
As the world of dance evolves, we see a trend to include acrodance in dance education. Instructor- Kaytia
Kostersky utilizes the Acrobatic Arts syllabus and her knowledge of Acrodance to take dancers to the next level.
Intro to Acro is available for students ages 7 -11 and is a non-competitive / non-performance based class for
level 1-2, introducing the basics of tumbling.

BALLET
The foundation for all forms of dance! Ballet focuses on proper alignment, posture, and fluidity of movement.
Each ballet class incorporates barre, centre work, and across-the-floor exercises.

BREAKING (Ages 7 & up)
Breaking is a dance that focuses on creative self-expression and the celebration of music. It encourages the
manifestation of one’s own personal style and helps develop strong interpersonal skills. The high-energy and
technical use of strength, stamina, and flexibility also make it a great practice of physical education.

COMBO (Ages 4-6)
Combo incorporates basic jazz and tap technique to allow students to get a feeling of both disciplines. Students
in Combo need both jazz & tap shoes!

CONTEMPORARY
Contemporary is constantly evolving; students will experiment with partnering, floor work, and creative tools,
using all the techniques of dance in one class. This class will only be offered to students who have several years
of strong technique in ballet or jazz.

CREATIVE DANCE (Ages 3-4)
Students will be introduced to the foundational elements and technique of ballet through music, movement,
stories, and enormous amounts of fun. Creative Dance is a great class to help develop gross motor skills and
musicality.

HIP HOP
Hip Hop has taken off in popularity thanks to its prevalence in music videos, TV shows, and movies. This fun,
high-energy form allows the dancer to break away from the structure and technique of traditional dance, and
puts an emphasis on style, attitude, flair, and musicality.

JAZZ
Talk about high energy! Students will walk through this technique using the ADAPT syllabus. Class will always
begin with a warm-up that includes stretching, strengthening, and muscle conditioning. It is followed by across-
the-floor exercises focusing on various travelling steps, turns, jumps, and combinations.

TAP
Fun and upbeat! Dancers use their feet to create their own percussive beats and rhythms. Tap helps develop
excellent coordination skills and strong musicality that carry over into all dance forms and music classes.
