FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE (FYE)
2The mission of the FYE
Providing extended support for students entering ODeL
for the first time for the duration of their first year at Unisa
Integrating the broad range of support services to ensure
timely and relevant support for students during their first
year of study
Supporting collaboration efforts between Unisa
departments and directorates to ensure effective service
delivery within the programme
Ensuring that consistent monitoring and evaluation takes
place throughout the programme duration

environment, the SRU
integrates the broad range of support
services, to ensure you receive timely
and relevant support
4What are we currently doing ?
Weekly emails
These emails have been designed with the first-year student in mind, aimed
at providing pertinent information at key points through your student
walk.
Please check your myLife email accounts on a regular basis to stay
abreast of important information

6“Enhancing the FYE @ Unisa”
Seminar: 25 September 2018
• Unisa FYE hosted a seminar and two guest speakers were
Dr. Danny Fontaine from University of Cape Town (UCT) and
Mr. Herkulaas Combrink from University of Free State (UFS).

• “Our current thinking needs to be grounded on both national
and international literature”
• The purpose of orientation is to make transition easier,
building block of FYE, reducing attrition, building networks,
critical engagement between students and staff, awareness
of practices of the institution

Create your own log in details: click the tab on the left: “New
Account”
Join your MOOC: First click on Membership
Click “Joinable sites”
Find the “My first year 101”
Complete the MOOC
Give us feedback by completing the student survey
13Telecentres
• The SRU has started collaboration with the Acting Director of
telecentres and teacher centres
• The SRU is in the process of marketing in collaboration with
telecentres
• Telecentre staff to be also trained on conducting the FYE
MOOC with students
• Increase students’ awareness of the existence of telecentres
• This assists in reducing the volume of students in campuses
and regional centres
• The SRU has all contact information and continuously refers
students to closest centres and relieves the burden of travel

STUDY?
• Do you study to submit assignments?
• Do you study to pass the exams?
• Do you study to graduate or get a
qualification?THE START OF THE JOURNEY • Unpacking your material • Knowing your material (study guides, tutorial letters, prescribed books, etc) • Knowing your lecturers • Knowing the available support to make studying at Unisa enjoyable
WHAT SUPPORT DOES UNISA OFFERS • Academics • Tutors • Study skills • Library • Career study and personal counselling
SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENTS • Due dates for submission • Getting feedback • What do you do with the feedback?
EXAMINATIONS • Why do you have to write the exams
PREPARING FOR THE EXAMS • Feed back from the lecturers. How to use it • Digging more information • Getting clarity • Checking past question papers • Venue based exam, submission portfolio, online examination, etc • Time-table • Give yourself enough time to study
• Organize your study space • Use flow charts or diagrams • Explain your answers to others • Organize study groups with fellow students • Take regular breaks • Eat proper but not heavy meal • Plan for your exam day
EXAM CHALLENGES • Anxiety • Stress • Lack of sleep
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE THE EXAM • Check the module code • Exam venue • Duration of the exam • What do you need to take to the exams • What NOT to take to the exams • Is it an open book exam?
MOMENT OF TRUTH • Read the questions thoroughly • Read the instructions to check if it is a multiple choice, essay type, or short answer questions • Underline action words (define, analyse, list, etc) • Divide your time according to the questions • Start with the questions that you master • Leave 10-15 minutes to read through your answers
WHAT IF YOU MISS THE EXAM • It depends on why you missed the exams (ill, family bereavement, work, etc) • If you were sick or there was a death of a close family member, you need to submit the doctors note or copy of death certificate within 10 days of the exam • If it was because of work, you submit an official letter from your employer explaining why you missed the exam
• If you miss the exam because you were not ready, it is a fail • ONLINE EXAMS- Login to the computer and write the exams • The duration of the exam will also be stipulated and you must finish within that time
