Luke, Chemistry, worked in France
“ I ’m Luke and I’ve recently returned to St Andrews from my placement year
at the Institute of Porous Materials in Paris. The entire experience has given
me many memories which I will cherish forever.
At the Institute, the whole team was extremely welcoming and happy to
answer any questions I had about life in Paris. The work itself was very
interesting: investigating a potential application to reduce atmospheric
carbon emissions. This gave me the opportunity to try new experiments
and equipment which I had not seen before. I learnt a huge amount about
porous materials, which I will take back with me into my final year back
home in Scotland. Although based in Paris, the lab was English speaking.
However, I still attended French classes at the Institute to make the most of
my time in France. I’m not fluent in French by any means, but my language
skills did significantly develop over
the year - not bad for a chemist!
Paris is such a fantastic place to
live. There is so much to do that
you can fill almost every weekend
exploring different parts of the
city. On top of this, the city is
extremely beautiful and offers an
Instagram opportunity at every
corner! I would definitely
recommend studying abroad.
I’ve learnt so much about
adapting to new places and
cultures, which will be
invaluable for when the time
