Principal’s Message – Fiona Young Term 2 – 2021
Congratulations May
Jacob P and Eamon O were recently selected as part of the Monday 10
Sutherland Zone soccer team to compete at the Sydney East soccer DanceSport
trials on 18 May at Kareela Oval. Chloe M and Chelsea A were Debating Round 1
selected in the Sutherland Zone netball team to compete at the Tuesday 11
Sydney East netball trials on 17 May at Menai Indoor Sports Centre. Naplan – Writing Years 3 & 5

Student Attendance Policy Wednesday 12
Student attendance is constantly monitored at Sutherland North Naplan – Reading Years 3 & 5
Public School. Parents/carers are responsible for ensuring the regular Counsellor Day
attendance of students at school. Parents/carers MUST provide an Ukulele Group
explanation for their child’s absence to the school within 7 days from Thursday 13
the first day of any period of absence through means such as Naplan - Language Year 3
telephone call, written note, email or via school stream. The 7 day Scripture
time frame for explaining absences is a requirement of the Assembly 12.30pm
Education Act (1990). Failure to explain an absence within this time Friday 14
will be recorded as an unjustified absence. Regular absences PSSA Sport
without explanation may result in the school engaging the support School Sport with Loftus Tafe
of the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO). Monday 17

Well done to our debating team who attended Grays Point Primary Tuesday 18
School for their first round. Although they didn’t secure a win Mrs Naplan - Language Year 5
Muldoon said it was very close. We wish them good luck in round 2. Athletics K-6

Naplan
In weeks 4 and 5 our Year 3 and 5 students will be working hard with the NAPLAN Tests. This year we are going
on-line. Over the last 12 months the school has been working with the Department of Education IT specialists,
upgrading infrastructure and working closely with the NAPLAN on-line team to test and problem solve as many
issues as we could. The school has also secured additional IT support staff during NAPLAN in the event of any
issues. Good luck to all Year 3 and Year 5 students!
Building Works
The 1/2 E classroom block is receiving new garden edging and filling in the gaps between the building and the
ground to prevent student balls from being lost underneath. We can’t wait to plant up the new garden area.
The 1/2 A and 1/2F classroom building is nearing the end of its works. Builders are also filling the gaps between
the building and the ground to stop student balls from disappearing underneath.

What is mindfulness?

all the things that worry you

• A time when you have a rest
from play time
• When you focus on the present
• Mindfulness makes your brain
stronger
• When you are mindful your brain slows down
• During mindfulness time you can hear the birds
singing because it’s so quiet
• Mindfulness time calms you down and it
refreshes your brain and makes all the busy
thoughts go away
• Gets you ready for learning
• You focus on your breathing

In Kindergarten we have been incorporating mindfulness into our classroom on a
daily basis. We have been doing this to help our students develop their social and
emotional skills whilst supporting their mental health and wellbeing.

The Green Team have been busy planting carrots, snow peas and a variety of
seeds from the Woolworths Discovery pots (thank you to everyone who donated
their seeds). A big thank you to Mrs Holmes and her dad for making the lovely
new garden signs.

To all the families at SNPS. You still have time to start and complete this year's Premier's
Reading Challenge without too much trouble.
I encourage all students from K-6 to participate.
If you lost the original note regarding the "How" you may pick up a copy from the office.
The Library needs new helpers to cover our new books. No experience is necessary as I can
arrange to demonstrate the process if required.
Covering can be done at home!
Please ring the office if you are interested.
