Alpine horn As its name suggests, this
traditional Swiss instrument has its roots in the
mountains. Texts from as early as 1555 show
that a wooden horn was used to gather herds
of cows. Its sound can carry
for up to ten kilometres,
depending on the terrain.

Film festivals
There are more than 20 film
festivals in Switzerland,
including in Aarau, Locarno
and Zurich. Some of them are
longstanding events, such as the
International Film Festival in
Locarno, which was founded back in 1946. The
Zurich Film Festival is more recent, but no less glam-
orous. It has been drawing both household names and
the stars of the future to Lake Zurich since 2005.
