                       THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
                                   JANUARY 12, 2020

The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives four reasons for the Incarnation, why God became man in
Jesus Christ. The third reason is “to be our model of holiness.” All of Jesus’ words and actions model for us
what we ought to do. He also shows us how we’re meant to be. Jesus’ baptism ought to remind us of our
own baptism and of the importance of baptism in the Christian life.
The Baptism of the Lord reminds us of our Trinitarian identity. When we are baptized, we stand in soli-
darity with Christ, bathed in the waters he sanctified. There, the Father proclaims our adoption into the
family of God. “‘This is my beloved son [this is my beloved daughter], with whom I am well pleased.’” And
the Spirit, too, descends. We are filled with the Spirit’s grace and power to continue Christ’s mission on
earth. We received these gifts in the sacrament, and they continue to dwell within us through sanctifying
grace. We can — and should — invite God to stir up these graces of our baptism and consider them in
our own lives.
Does Christ feel like a distant relative
two thousand years in the past? Or do
you see him as someone who can be en-

where you find your sense of dignity and
worth. Do you still search for it in success,
social status, and selfish pursuits? Or are

of God? Remember, baptism gives us a

you pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you?

that you miss the mission? This week, let’s

                 ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT
Helping every soul within our reach to attain eternal life in Jesus Christ.
Powered by prayer and the Holy Spirit, with roots dating back to 1701,
the Archdiocese of Detroit forms disciples and builds Catholic community in southeast Michigan.
We administer Roman Catholic parishes and schools within the city of Detroit as well as Wayne, Oakland,
Macomb, St. Clair, Monroe and Lapeer counties. We serve with a spirit of gratitude and joy,
going forth with apostolic boldness to Unleash the Gospel.
The archdiocese is under the care of the Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit.

                                            Youth Ministry
The Archdiocese of Detroit is hosting the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at
Detroit’s Sacred Heart Parish next Saturday, January 18.
The theme for the day is from the Gospel of Luke: “The Spirit of the Lord us upon me, because he has
anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.”
Youth ministers and youth from urban and suburban parishes are invited to participate.
Your gifts to the CSA make possible events like this, which keep youth engaged and active in their
faith. Youth ministry is coordinated through the
Department of Evangelization and Missionary Discipleship,
along with young adult and campus ministry.

                                    STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS
                                       The Baptism of the Lord
Today, in St. Matthew’s Gospel, the evangelist shares how John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. In the
Second Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter stresses how … Beginning in Galilee after the bap-
tism … God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. This act of grace begins Christ’s
public ministry of proclaiming the Good News and bringing salvation to the world. Our own Baptism
calls us to discipleship in Christ, and Jesus continually knocks on the door of our hearts to deepen this
discipleship. When we let Him in — make Him personal in our lives — we better express our disciple-
ship through the sharing of our God-given gifts in gratitude with our parish, the Archdiocese, and the
community at large. Make time to take the St. Austin Spiritual Gifts Inventory at www.staustin.org/
                              spiritual-gifts-inventory to discover your gifts.
