The Best Restaurants on Wine
Farms in the Cape
By The Inside Guide 2020

Because a day in the country is the best elixir…
“Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life’s most civilised pleasures,”
says Michael Broadbent, the almost 92-year-old British wine critic and writer.

And we couldn’t agree more, particularly if you happen to be doing so on one of the Cape’s
spectacular wine farms, with breathtaking views and a relaxed rural ambience completing the
picture.

Our dilemma is this: with over 300 vineyards dotted around the peninsula – from Franschhoek,
and Stellenbosch to Paarl, Constantia and even Durbanville – where does one even begin?

We’ve whittled down the list to our 32 favourite wine-farm restaurants, so that all you have to do
is hop in your car, and follow the scent of nectar.

Have you enjoyed a meal at a wonderful wine-farm restaurant that you think we should know
about? We’d love to hear about it in the comments below.

Franschhoek
1. Chefs Warehouse at Maison

Claire Gunn

When chef Liam Tomlin opened the third branch of this famed restaurant in Franschhoek in 2017
– at Maison Estate, no less – it became the gastronomic news of the season! Located in the
space that was formerly home to The Kitchen, the eatery boasts sweeping garden views and a
chic minimalist interior, with chef David Schneider at the helm (who worked alongside Liam at
Chefs Warehouse Beau Constantia). As with Liam’s three other wildly popular restaurants, the
emphasis is on superb “global tapas”, accompanied by the estate’s excellent wines. If you’ve not
yet eaten here, book a table!

2. Orangerie Restaurant at Le Lude

Located on the lovely Le Lude MCC Estate, Orangerie’s chic, all-white interiors – with the odd
splash of colour – echo chef Nicolene Barrow’s intriguing menu: purist European execution
tinged with personal flair. Expect fresh ingredients – sourced seasonally from the surrounding
forests, meadows, mountains and seas – judiciously combined to create memorable and
exquisite-looking dishes. The French-inspired interiors – white-and-black tiling, atrium windows,
with potted plants and floral arrangements providing pops of colour – create a soothing and
decidedly civilised atmosphere.

3. The Werf at Boschendal

Housed in Boschendal’s original cellar, The Werf epitomises a particular style of plaas chic –
heritage-Dutch-meets-modern-Afrikaner – arguably invented by Karen Roos (whose nearby
Babylonstoren is a must-visit when in Paarl). The result is a familiar, unintimidating and so
current! Chef Christiaan Campbell’s passion and commitment to ensuring that ethical and
sustainable methods are followed on every inch of this nine-hectare estate is reflected in his
“innovative country dishes”, which explore age-old food fermentation methods, adding a healthy
(and, ironically, modern) dimension to the restaurant’s already bountiful offerings. The warm
service, stylish interiors and spectacular surrounds (with ancient oak trees, forests and untamed
gardens) makes for a perfect Sunday luncheon.
Good to know Boschendal’s gourmet picnics are among our favourites.

Fronted by chef and owner Christophe Dehosse, and head chef Alex Rykaart

building at Glenelly Estate and could compete with the biggest rivals in the area. It offers a
French-inspired dining experience, no doubt reflected in the warm, yet elegant decor, which
includes a mix of 19th-century chairs and classic Parisian tables.
On chilly days, it’s rather nice to cosy up to the fireplace, or gather in the elegant wine-tasting
area above the restaurant; but if the sun is out, sit at one of the long wooden or stone tables on
the deck under the pergola, and enjoy beautiful views of the vineyards and surrounding hills
while enjoying your meal.

10. Terroir at Kleine Zalze

Situated on the slopes of the Kleine Zalze estate in the Stellenbosch Winelands, this venue is so
much more than its four walls. Dining at Terroir is an absorbing experience, during which time
simultaneously stands still and slips by. This could be attributed to the rustling of the oak trees, or
the view of the verdant golf course, or the food, the hospitality or the wine. But we think it’s the
combination of all.
Guests can choose to dine on the outdoor terrace or head indoors. The relaxed décor makes you
feel right at home, with warm service complementing this feeling. When your waitron has worked
in the same restaurant for close on a decade, you know you’re onto a good thing.
No matter the season, you can count on head chef Michael Broughton and his team for exquisite
presentation, flavour combinations and textures that surprise and delight.

3. Buitenverwachting Restaurant

Kathryn Rossiter

This historic farm is one of the most beautiful in the valley, with a rambling garden populated by
squirrels, owls and fowls, making it an especially great spot for children.
Fresh from a new-and-improved renovation (after a devastating storm gutted the roof in June
2017), the restaurant has a fresh, contemporary feel, while still retaining its warm and welcoming
atmosphere, thanks to a cosy fireplace, and the fact that it’s housed in one of the estate’s original
thatch cottages. The view of the sloping vineyards and Constantiaberg mountains through floor-
to-ceiling panels is breathtaking, and service is always professional and friendly.
We recommend chef Edgar Osoijnik’s five-course Fine Bites tasting menu (with or without wine):
five deliciously varied dishes that are seasonally driven, attractively presented and moreishly
tasty!
Good to know Also on the estate, Coffee BloC is a low-key spot that serves delicious coffee,
breakfasts and light meals. Buitenverwachting also hosts wine tastings (and charcuterie platters)
