THE HAGUE

The Gandhi Centre was set up on 2nd October, 2011 with primary objective of
establishing, reviving and strengthening the cultural relations between India and
Netherlands. The ICCR has set up such 36 Indian cultural centers in different parts of the
world.
The objective of the Gandhi Centre is to promote awareness of India's composite
cultural heritage in The Netherlands. The activities of the cultural centre include
showcasing various art forms of India such as dance, drama, music, films, talks and
Seminars on subjects related to India. The centre also teaches Yoga, Music and Hindi.It
has a rich library with books on History, Art, Culture, Political Affairs and Fiction.The
Gandhi Centre functions under the Embassy of India and is established by the ICCR.

“Gita and Stress Management”

Shri Girish Lad
Girish Lad is the Founder of Texas School of Mental Health. The School has been founded
with the objective of preparing mental health counsellors, therapists, specialised experts who will be
trained in the cutting-edge evidence based Mental health practice courses and engaging in research
programs on various mental health issues.
Texas School of Mental Health is conceptualised by Girish Lad, who has over 20 years of
international experience in various social issues, especially related to women empowerment,
controlling female feticide in India and in governance. He has invented various technology solutions
to address the issues and one of his patented inventions has saved over 500,000 girls in India over
past 10 years. He has received number of national and international awards and recognitions by
various dignitaries.

3Bharatanatyam Recital
by
Ms. Niharika Sharma
Niharika Sharma is an Indian classical dancer from Bangalore. She has received
Bharatanatyam training from Vidushi Divyashree Guruprasad, at Siri Nritya Loka, Bangalore. She
is also trained under Dr.Nandini Eswer and Dr. Rohitha Eswer, at Raasavrunda, Mysore.
Niharika has secured First place (Senior - Solo) at the International Dance Festival,
conducted by Nrityanjali in Delhi. She has performed at the International Dashera festival in
Mysore.

4Panel Discussion
on
“Constitution of India and Fundamental Duties”.
Article 51A of Part IV A of the Constitution of India provides for “Fundamental Duties”.
These fundamental duties are recognized as moral obligations that actually help in upholding the
spirit of nationalism, as well as support the harmony of the nation, as well as the well-being of
citizens. They were added by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act in 1976.
These 11 Fundamental Duties borrowed from the Constitution of erstwhile USSR encourage
a sense of patriotism among the country's citizens. Furthermore, while citizens are morally obligated
by the Constitution to perform these duties, they are not legally enforceable, unless so provided by
parliamentary legislation.

5Maha Shivaratri Celebrations
Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honour of Lord Shiva. There is a
Shivaratri in every luni-solar month of the Hindu calendar, on the month's 13th night/14th day, but
once a year in late winter (February/March, or phalgun) and before the arrival of Summer, marks
Maha Shivaratri which means "the Great Night of Shiva".
It is a major festival in Hinduism, and this festival is solemn and marks a remembrance of
"overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the world. It is observed by remembering Shiva
and chanting prayers, fasting, and meditating on ethics and virtues such as self-restraint, honesty,
non-injury to others, forgiveness. The ardent devotees keep awake all night. Others visit one of the
Shiva temples or go on pilgrimage to Jyotirlingams. The Gandhi Centre celebrates this festival with
songs and dances.

6Ghazal Concert
by
Shri Mehndi Hasan
Mehndi Hasan is born in a traditional family of great musicians. He is the son of great musician
Ustad Sattar khan. He started to listen, learn and sing with some of the greatest musicians since the
age of 6. He started learning vocal in 1994 under the masterly guidance of Ustad Sattar khan and his
cousin brother Mahmood. His masterly performances on ghazal songs, thumari, Rajasthani mands
and many other Indian singing is a magnetic attraction to all and recently he sang duet with renowned
Anup Jalota. He also recently sang at the London Indian Culture Centre, The Nehru Centre.
Mehndi Hasan is keenly interested is blending the East and West traditional music by
composing performing and recording with many top musicians from the west.

7Pravasi Bharatiya Divas -Live Telecast
9th January 2020
The Gandhi Centre organized a live
telecast with Indian Diaspora across the
Globe by Dr. Subramanyam Jai Shankar,
Minister of External Affairs on the Pravasi
Bharatiya Divas 2020. The EAM had an
interactive session with the Indian
diaspora and answered their queries.
Eight missions namely EOI
Paramaribo, CGI New York, EOI Doha,
HCI Kuala Lumpur, HCI Singapore, CGI
Perth, HCI London and HCI Port Louis
were the selected ones to interact with the
Minister.
Vishwa Hindi Diwas 2020
10th January 2020
The Gandhi Centre organized
Vishwa Hindi Diwas (World Hindi Day)
2020. Dr. Prof. Mohankant Gautam was
the Chief Guest and Prof. R. P. Sitaldin
was the Guest of Honour. Poets, writers
and Hindi enthusiasts gave their talk on
Hindi, Hindi Poetry, the importance of
Hindi language, its characteristics,
grammar and the beauty of the language
itself. The highlight of the Hindi Diwas
was the poems and ghazals recited by Shri
Shiv Mohan Singh.

9Makar Sankranti 2020
11th January 2020
The Gandhi Centre organized
Makar Sankranti Festival 2020. Ms. Pranita
Despande gave a presentation on Makar
Sankranti celebrations in Maharastra and
Mr. Jay Rajani gave a presentation on the
Uttarayan in Gujarat.
The HMG group lead by Ms. Usha Gayatri,
Dr. Mohan & their team sang beautiful
songs related to the festival. Ms. Keya Kar
and her group performed classical dances
and Folk dances from different regions of
India. An energy packed Bhangra was
performed by Mrs.& Mr. Paramjot Singh as
part of Lohri.
Every guest was welcomed with small
palm, leaf katoris with chikki and til gud, as
said in Maharastra “Til Gud Ghya, goad
goad bola”- have sesame & jaggery and
speak sweet. The Gandhi Centre was
decorated in and out with the kites and
looked very festive. The audience had a
great time as well as the performers enjoyed
entertaining. Specially the Dutch crowd
enjoyed the til gud and chikki (Sweet made
of Sesame and Jaggery) and the colourful
dances. The Celebration ended with the
serving of Gulab Jamuns and samosas
with coffee and tea.

10Dhrupad Vocal Concert
18th January 2020
The Gandhi Centre organized a
Dhrupad Vocal Concert by Ms. Marianne
Svašek, and Ms. Marloes Milius, a
teacher and student combination,
Mr. Nathanaël van Zuilen accompanied
them on Pakhawaj. The audience was
mesmerized listening to the Dutch
musicians singing Dhrupad. The concert
was subtle and ambience was all Indian
the performers dressed in beautiful Indian
attire.

Pravasi Bhartiya Divas
19th January 2020
The Indian Diaspora Day (Pravasi
Bhartiya Divas) celebrations were held at
Diamant Theatre in The Hague on 19th
January 2020. Over 300 members of the
Indian Diaspora participated in the event.
The Indian Diaspora Day was
inaugurated by H.E Shri Venu Rajamony
the Ambassador of India Shri Ram Lakina
and Shri Ram Lal along with the various
Indian community key people.
Shri Venu Rajamony gave a
presentation on “The History of Indian
Immigration to the Netherlands”. This
was followed by the cultural programmes
which included performances from Hoi
11Choi, NANMA (Netherlands Association
of Malayalees), NMM (Netherlands
Marathi Mandal), NLTC (Netherlands
Telugu Community), Anandadhara, Asha
Kiran, Sanskriti and ICIN. The Event
Management was by Tamil Sangam.
Shri Venu Rajamony, felicitated the
artists and the performers of the event.
Republic Day
26th January 2020
The Embassy of India
celebrated 71st Republic Day of India at
The India House, Wassenaar in the
Netherlands. H.E Ambassador Shri Venu
Rajamony hoisted the Flag and read
President Shri Ram Nath Kovind’s
address to the Nation. The Flag Hoisting
ceremony was attended by over 800
people. A dance performance by Ms.
Vaijeyanthi Panchapagesan and
Ms.Archana Jayaraman and patriotic
Songs by the Madras Chorus Group
enthralled the audience.
12Republic Day Diplomatic Reception
27th January 2020
President of the Senate of the
Netherlands Prof. Dr. Jan Anthonie
Bruijn was the Guest of Honour at a
diplomatic reception hosted by
Ambassador of India to the Netherlands,
H.E. Mr. Venu Rajamony, on January 27
to mark the 71st Republic Day of
India. The reception was held at the
historic Grote Kerk (Great / St. James'
Church). Dutch dignitaries, Ambassadors
of various countries stationed in The
Hague, senior officials of the Dutch
Government and prominent members of
the Indian community were among the
250 guests who attended the reception.
Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi was
among the guests attending the reception
in The Hague.
The celebrations included dance and
vocal performances by Indian
communities in The Netherlands.
Zangam, a choir based in the Netherlands,
rendered traditional Indian songs and
Navrang, Sanskriti & Tandav Group,
performed folk dances - Ghoomar,
Kalbelia reflecting the traditional life of
the people of different regions of India. A
beautiful Bollywood dance was also
presented to the guests.

14The Gandhi Centre organizes regular classes in:
• Yoga
• Hindi Language
• Tabla (Indian percussion instrument)
These classes are open to each and every one at no cost. The classes are designed to cater to all age
groups as well as from beginners to advanced.
Yoga Classes
Yoga is a science and art of healthy living with origins in ancient India. It is a stress
management therapy and its practice increase immunity and contributes to overall physical and
mental being.

Hindi Language Classes
Hindi language has its origins in the ancient Indian language Sanskrit. It is widely used in both
India and Suriname. Large number of Students study this language at the Gandhi Centre.

15Tabla Classes
Internationally acclaimed Tabla teacher Mr. Heiko Dijker of Dutch origin has been trained
under Ustad Faiyaz Khan, the famous Tabla player of India. Along with his public performances,
he also teaches in Universities. He teaches Tabla at the Gandhi Centre. The students love him because
of his personal attention to every student.

The Gandhi Centre library has a rich collection of books on Foreign affairs, Politics,
Philosophy, History, Religion, Art, Culture, Dance, Monuments, Autobiographies, Personalities,
Yoga, Hindi, Fiction and others. There is a reading room and book issue facilities.
