Florence was originally established as a
railroad hub in the mid-1800s, first because
of the Great Pee Dee River, then because it
was the intersection of three major rail lines.
During the Revolutionary War, General
Francis Marion - known as the “Swamp Fox”
- commanded a force of mostly volunteer
citizens, called militia, who fought in the
eastern part of South Carolina. He was
known for his surprise attacks near rivers
such as the Great Pee Dee - attacks that
made it difficult for the British to move
men and supplies. Today, there are many
landmarks in the Pee Dee that pay respect
to General Marion, including Florence’s
Francis Marion University.
Additional historic sites in Florence
include the Florence National Cemetery,
established in 1865. The first woman to be
buried in a National Cemetery, Florena
Henry Timrod Schoolhouse Budwin, was interred here.

Francis Marion University is named in honor
of South Carolina’s Revolutionary War hero,
General Francis “Swamp Fox” Marion. The
beautiful campus features a nature trail,
planetarium/observatory, and two preserved
hewn-timber cabins.
Lynches River County Park features a river
swamp with towering cypress trees as well as
sand hills offering a wide variety of vegetation.
Popular activities include river fishing,
canoeing, nature trails, and picnicking. There
is also a splash pad for the kids open during
summer, and an Environmental Discovery Downtown Florence

The Florence Veterans Park pays homage to those who are serving or have served in our armed services with a
“Wall of Honor” and several monuments for the wars of the 20th century.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are available year-round at the Pee Dee State Farmers Market. Equally enticing is Young
Plantations, where you can sample delicious pecans and purchase gifts for your friends back home or a treat for
yourself.

If you’ve never tasted shrimp and grits, you don’t
know what you’re missing! And plenty of folks in
Florence agree that Red Bone Alley has the recipe
to beat.
Red Bone Alley is a unique Florence eatery that
is famous for its decor and Southern fusion menu.
The restaurant itself consists of two floors with an
interior that recreates the outdoor experience
of Charleston. There are Lowcountry landscape
murals painted by artist David Boatwright, a back
porch with glowing lanterns, an upstairs balcony
overlooking the alley, and a children’s area
complete with an old ice cream truck.
If the space itself doesn’t persuade you, the menu
will. Red Bone Alley is famous for much more
than its Lowcountry Shrimp and Grits. Customers
pour in for entrees such as their Grilled Sweet Tea
Marinated Pork Chop and Pimento Cheese Burger.
Red Bone Alley prepares all of its entrees to order,
and uses only the freshest local ingredients. For
example, the rice comes from a plantation in
neighboring Darlington County.
