3. SURGERY
3.1 Professional Development: Preparing for a Surgical Career
Introduction
Entering surgical training is a competitive process so it is best to start
planning your professional development activities early. There are
numerous professional development activities for which you can be
granted professional development leave which are applicable to surgery
in general or specific surgical specialties.
The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons has developed the JDocs
Framework that can assist you in making sure you are developing the
correct skills and behaviours in your early postgraduate years to assist
you towards developing your career in surgery.
The framework is based on the nine core competencies of the college
and is shown below:
The Professional Development Leave Guide 12Subscription to JDocs for a fee will give you access to the online ePortfolio which allows you to: 3.2 GSSE: Generic Surgical Sciences Exam The GSSE is run by the Royal College of Surgeons and is now a mandatory eligibility requirement for selection to the majority of specialty training boards. The exam allows applicants to demonstrate a minimum standard of knowledge in anatomy, pathology and physiology. You are required to pass each section and achieve an overall pass mark to successfully pass the exam. Professional development leave can be taken both for the exam days and for study in the lead up to the exam. The Professional Development Leave Guide 13
In 2021 there will be 3 dates available for junior doctors to sit their exam:
Date Location Registration dates
17 and 18 February 2021 From 10 November 2020 to
08 December 2020
Adelaide, Brisbane,
16 and 17 June 2021 From 09 March 2021 to 07
Melbourne, Perth, Sydney,
April 2021
Auckland and Wellington
6 and 7 October 2021 From 06 July 2021 to 03
(JDocs only) August 2021
More information: https://www.surgeons.org/Examinations/generic-surgical-
sciences-examination-gsse
2020 fees: $4,145.00 / $4,560.00 (JDocs)
There are a number of courses run in Australia to help candidates to prepare
for the GSSE. It is up to the individual to decide if they would like to attend a
course as there is no requirement to attend a course to sit the GSSE. It is worth
speaking to people who have previously passed the GSSE regarding how they
prepared for the examination and if they attended a preparation course whether
they felt it assisted them or not.
CTEC – Generic Surgical Sciences Training Course
In 2021 CTEC will run a GSSE online training course (24 online tutorials
between 1 February to 31 May 2021). Online tutorial participants will have
access to a range of recommended learning materials, revision modules and
online mock exams to assist with their study efforts. Further information will be
provided in the near future.
Interested participants are encouraged to register their interest online:
